Saber was originally designed to be male before Nasu gender switched him, to appeal more to the otaku crowd.

熱砂の獅身獣（アプホル・スフィンクス）= Andro Sphinx, The Beast of Heat Sand. Rider’s Phantasm Beast, is an extreme threat, man-eater, mana - breathing can destroy Gods and continent-eating. Can change form into fire tornado.

I think Saber female was a wasted potential. I mean, Nasu didn't even include the chauvinism that's part of the medieval era. That would have been much more interesting.

Still, I would prefer Saber female over Saber male any day. I couldn't imagine how interesting it would be to see a stoic male Arturia over a stoic female Arturia, as typical female main characters are just squealing tsunderes, so it was nice to have someone like Saber who's cold and calculative, despite being a female. Glad to see that we have another badass heroine to add to the roster, and not just badass in the dark and gritty way like Remy of Black Lagoon or Integra Hellsing from Hellsing, but someone honorable and noble.

And also, I think that honorable part was the thing that really made Saber so compatible with Shirou. There's a real chemistry there, partly because of this similarity, which works effectively as a romance story. A female badass heroine that defends a male hero who isn't just a whiny wimp like Rock Okajima? That was something fresh for me. Despite being physically weak, Shirou obviously has the spirit and willpower to match Saber, so this match-up became really intriguing to watch.

I agree that a female Arturia is more interesting than a Male one, but a male Arturia does seem to work. You can see it by watching the OVA of Fate/Prototype, if you haven't already. It is different enough from Fate/Stay Night that you won't be spoiled.

It you are interested in exploring chauvinism and feminism in a "historic" setting I recommend trying out. Analogue: A Hate Story.
