First off, I want to say that I don't mind reading a story about overpowered characters, if they started out that way. However, I don't like stories where the characters are handed stuff on platters upon platters of silver.

Philosopher's Sword is about a random-shmuck getting reincarnated as cannon-fodder and trying to avert his death-flag. However, the Protagonist seems to have advanced to the point where the only thing he can't beat is the Final Boss (because of a technicality) and his 'hard-work' makes it look like that everyone simply isn't working hard enough.

Senior-level fighting skills and magic? Filthy rich? Hoards of items? Top-tier equipment? Etc, etc.

If his struggles were more entertaining, maybe I would continue, but they're not. So I'm out.

So, I skimmed (again ) through the early chunks of this, and it does feel interesting. While I don't like some of the MC's sloppy sides (like, not chaning the girl's aircut nor hair color nor even covering with a mantle and taking her all over the wolrd while "hidding her identity"? get real); I love it on how every time the MC thinks that he is in track to solve the crisis, something really unexpected happens and he needs to revise the script.

The game is able to be played through so many times because it has 5 different playable main characters, free scenario (other than major plot points, you can do whatever the heck you want with little restriction) and a synthesis/forge system that lets you create equips stronger than even the strongest in-game items. The "joke character" that the MC reincarnates into is a joke not only because of the silly death cry, but because he also gives extremely bad advice in the beginning (people suspect it's the devs forgot to edit his lines after changing parameters in the game during development).

I agree on the whole sitting on his heels during the beginning, but keep in mind that there really isn't much you can do in the first place as an infant with no special powers or anything. Sure you can say he could study up on magic and all, but he needs to first learn how the language and how to read in the first place, which would lead to only 1-2 years of self-studying magic at most. Can't really do something about a demon invasion with only that paltry amount of "training" at only 5 years old.

Parents work hard to raise him while he spends 5 years self-studying magic and learning the sword. Goes out on group excursion to exterminate the monsters in a nearby ruin and starts figuring out that he grows faster, most likely due to the fact that he was a playable character in the game.

Large factor of the MC growing many times faster than anyone else because he's fighting monsters all day, everyday as opposed to everyone else who avoids monsters whenever possible. Stockpiles money by selling stuff dropped from monsters and after half a year or so, learns mid-rank magic and starts prepping for creating his own stuff. Finds a base that's perfect for being a storehouse and forge for him since it's not reachable on foot (he hovers for a bit using wind magic).

Already strong enough to not die from the early game event, but is having too much fun grinding levels, money, and gathering stuff to make his own equipment to stop.
To beat the maou, you need the to be from the lineage of the philosopher who sealed the maou before and take back the power of the philosopher from the 5 generals so that they can break through the maou's barrier. Thus MC needs to have the heroes defeat them. Issue is he has no way of knowing which hero will be the one to defeat the maou, and if he strays from the script, he won't be able to read the maou's movements anymore, so he has to keep an eye out on all the heroes while sticking to the script as much as he can (though he's still going to try and avoid some of the really unpleasant events that happen in early game).

Another year passes and he's already strong enough to beat the maou with just 2-3 shots of magic if there's no barrier and has more money and rare materials than he could ever want.

MC is 18 now and leaves home. Goes to base and collects info from the eagle familiar he created to use to keep a watch on the heroes and demon army. Heads to the village where he's supposed to meet one of the heroes and in prep, he goes to the hiding spot the joke character had for his fortune and leaves some stuff for the hero to grab later. He's able to summon anything from his base using the summoning magic in his bracelet which is linked to the various storage boxes at his base.

Do note that the first 5 chapters are only the prologue and the interesting stuff doesn't happen until after you get past it.

The Protagonist is working his ass-off, yet it doesn't really feel like since he's got all these nice stuff without any real sense of hardship. Frankly, that's how most stories on that site progress. But, still, I'm way bored. It's like reading someone playing an RTS and proceeds to turtle, or a Quest where the character gets to safely develop a nuke in their basement. zzz



The starting-point of the game is almost here and the Protagonist is almost 18-yo too. He tells his parents that he's going to become an Adventurer and they celebrated his departure between tears and joy.



The Protagonist also has an Eagle Familiar, which he can looked through the eyes of. Uuhhh... Something about using the Eagle to scout around and see if his actions have caused any changes to the plot. I think.



Anyways, as per canon, the Protagonist is heading south to a village called Finto. He wants to check out the situation.

But, stalling his inspection, he runs out of the village and arrives at the hide-out which Madin Luong had used in the game. It's a small hut and it's pretty clear that it hasn't been used in a while.



The Protagonist brings out a Wooden Storage Box with magic. In the game, it could store an infinite amount of things but it doesn't work exactly like that in reality. Anyways, he has a Leather Bracelet which summons the Storage Box, which further summons the goods back at his base an-- FUCK.

I'm done.



First off, I want to say that I don't mind reading a story about overpowered characters, if they started out that way. However, I don't like stories where the characters are handed stuff on platters upon platters of silver.

Philosopher's Sword is about a random-shmuck getting reincarnated as cannon-fodder and trying to avert his death-flag. However, the Protagonist seems to have advanced to the point where the only thing he can't beat is the Final Boss (because of a technicality) and his 'hard-work' makes it look like that everyone simply isn't working hard enough.

Senior-level fighting skills and magic? Filthy rich? Hoards of items? Top-tier equipment? Etc, etc.

If his struggles were more entertaining, maybe I would continue, but they're not. So I'm out.

Hmmnn, can't be arsed to, but the stuff that I remember properly is.....

Spoiler:

- The MC prevents all of the deaths that he wants to prevent (they are like 5 or 6 named people and some towns getting trashed).
- The MC needs to revise his plans severals times due to many things coming out differently than what he expected, this actually keeps the series relatively interesting.
- There is another character who, like the MC is trying to change the situation to prevent a bad end. It's a time traveler and unlike the MC, he is not on his first attempt. Time traveler mentions that this is the first time that the MC is like ths.
- Eventually, the MC starts doing the smart thing and start disclosing the future to people of influence. First he does this with a young king? emperor? whose country gets trashed, after saving the country, that king starts a continental coaliation to fend off the mazokus due to the MC's advice.
- All of the demon generals get klled and all of the heroes -1 get part of their "sage essence" or whatever. The best ending in the game was a single hero getting all of their white stuff, but the mc got screwed there
- MC finds a structure that he doesn't know what the hell is for that has unknown energy.
- The spirit kings stop Maoh's continental attack thanks to the nature of it being seen through; the maoh sends MC a challenge that he'll wait in his lair.
- After offing all generals, the MC comes out clean and tells every character his circumsntances (that's like 30 people since each hero has their own party).
- He eventually mentions how they are more or less on uncharted future territory now and they have no means to kill the Maoh.
- MC proposes crafting a broken holy sword with the help of the spirits, and they do after some preparation. This rules out 3 out of the 5 regular heroes from battling the maoh due to their bad compatibility with holy element and swords; but they were cool about it.
- Naturally, the princess that likes the MC ends up with the sword.
- Assault on maoh's castle; the maoh forces actually gave a pretty decent fight considering that the army attacking his castle was humongous compared to the army that attacked on the game. The Maoh also crafted new monsters considering the strength of the MC.
- The face off, maoh actually disables their ace via making the princess unable to focus magical spirits into the sword. Tough fight but eventually the princess channels the white stuff on the sword instead and kills the maoh.
- Something always bothered the MC, and he ask the Maoh what he was after, the Maoh figures that if he is asking that, is because "he saw that" and dies.... so, I'm guessing that there is a foreshadowing that there is something more evil than the Maoh, that the Maoh was trying to defeat for the sake of his race even if he has to erase humanity for it.
- Large scale victory banquet with vips from every country that is going to last several days, MC skips out because he hates formalities and doesn't want to mingle with the influential people even though the banquet was basically in recognition of his success.
- The princess was 100% sure that he was going to skip, and understanding her feelings, her father lets her go after him (they actually leave the castle together).
- Next for the MC is the "post game" content which is related to the dragon tribe with some hidden boss in the game; the MC had sort of gave out a warning of not dropping your guard even if the demon lord is dead before. There is of course also the secret of Maoh's objective, but I'm guessing that this is going to be for the last.

One interesting stuff is that the heroine "lost her power", one of her main specialities was spirit magic, but the demon lord voided her spirit contracts. once a contract is undone, you can't do it again with the same spirit.... so I'm guessing she is gonna want something to replace that, even though she is damn tough without those spirits.
Another interesting thing about the series is the "sense of companionship" that the characters have, most series like that have everyone orbiting the mc as if he was the sun which is boring and stupid as hell; in this series you can feel that the other characters also have "the charisma to carry the game" and have their own bonds of friendship between them and whatnot, it feels way more credible.
Due to the crisis, there it has been like no romance at all, it has been put off. It's also interesting that pretty much the only girl that's on the MC is the princess. The MC has sort of held himself back on the romance because he was sure that the princess was going to return to live her royal life after the war being done.

bleh, longer than I thought I would do this, also not sure about a bunch of stuff? it's been a while since I checked this and I didn't really gave this a detailed read (not like I can anyway ).

Well just discovered this novel (novel updates for the win and thanks roaclaynous) and i liked it (the romance is too slow and no snusnu tho)

Now that the maou is gone let's see if the princess heroine and our sage hero go into romance
