Tv-show or best Japanese movies?

Wanting to delve into the Culture more...Horror, suspense, comedy, or thriller(Even ghost/supernatural work). Just really good movies or t.v shows that are from Japan.

Just an example...I JUST now found Mirai Nikki was made into a tv-show...and I am dying to watch it. So even action/horror/comedy anime/manga turned television?

All the Japanese TV shows I've tried have really horrible acting. Most the Japanese movies as well.

Since I don’t know what genre you like, I’ll give you some examples of each category that you can try.

If you like samurai flick, watch the relatively recent japanese movie 13 Assassins by Takashi Miike. That one really kick-ass.

If you like mystery or conspiracy theory, you can check out the live action version of 20th Century Boys, Death Note, Kaiji and all their sequels.

For drama, you can try the live action movie of Grave of the Fireflies.

If you like sci-fi action fantasy, you might give live action version of Space Battleship Yamato, Casshern, Rurouni Kenshin, or Tetsujin 28 a try.

For serious action hero TV series, I suggest you watch Garo and its predecessor Kamen Rider Kuuga.

For Horror, you can watch The Ring (Ringu) and The Grudge and all the sequels.

If you like Kaijuu (Giant Monster) movies, you can check out any Godzilla and Gamera movies that came out after 2000 as well as the original Gojira from 1950s.

If you truly like some masterpieces no matter how old they are, you can check out Akira Kurosawa’s movies like Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Kagemusha, etc. IMO it’d be easier to appreciate them if you read some reviews first before approaching this movies.

I think it's enough for now. If you like those titles I can add more.

The only good Japanese live-action show I've seen is IWGP. Most other J-dramas are horrible.

I find Kokuhaku (a.k.a. Confessions) to be a must watch when it comes to Japanese cinema. It's a wonderful piece of psychological thriller that serves as a harsh critique of Japanese society, while subverting universally upheld notions of childhood innocence. The directing is top notch as well.

Yeah, that one is great . I too would like to add more suggestions like this, but I see the OP hasn't replied yet. So, I'll just wait if he's really interested.

You should watch Love Letter (1995). A beautiful movie about looking back at the past and dealing with grief. I cried till I had no tears left. Here's the trailer.

Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

As for comedy tv shows, I most definitely recommend Trick. There are 3 seasons plus a couple of specials and movies. Hiroshi Abe as a scientist and Yukie Nakama as a magician work together to solve "supernatural" cases which most of the time can be explained using science. I love their chemistry. They always poke fun at each other.

Oh, and do watch Takuya Kimura's dramas (Long Vacation, Beautiful Life, Pride, Engine, HERO, Good Luck!,etc, etc). His recent dramas are not exactly my type of dramas but his acting still blows me away.

If you want something heavy, watch Mother. A wonderful drama that highlights the relationship between a child and an adult, even though they are not real mother and daughter. Again, I cried a lot.
