Episode 12 is the second real "disappointment" episode of the series IMO. There's two big problems that I had with the episode.

1. Yue's reason for not wanting to make a Pactio involves the fact that she's afraid of kissing another person altogether. That reason basically removes any chance of any some major character development in this episode, as it seems that the new series is ignoring the fact that

Yue's original concern involves Nodoka and how she's afraid that kissing Negi will affect their friendship, since she knows full well that Nodoka is love with Negi-sensei.

As a result, just like the Sayo episode, character development is thrown out the window in favor for a plot that tries to get the "non-magic related" students involved in the episode (in this case, Negi and his crew looking for Yue, while Yue tries to avoid them). About the only thing that I was expecting to happen in this episode that did happen (besides Yue's Pactio kiss, which could have been handled much better IMO) is the execution of Haruna's Pactio, although I would have preferred it to happen while in battle rather than in a time of peace.

2. The cliffhanger ending in this episode. Unless the people at SHAFT know what they're doing (i.e. it involves something that will reset both Negi and his "non-magic related" students), I really don't think it's such a good idea to have an event that's better off saved for the last few episodes (everybody discovering Negi's secret) to happen around the show's halfway point.

After quite a lot of episodes involving mindless fun, I'm actually glad to see that we might be getting back to the real plot.

I can hardly see them getting away with the whole class witnessing a pactio... Isn't it time to start some serious fights now that Negi's team has gotten larger? I miss the scenes we've seen in the first episodes.
It might indeed have been used in a better way around the end of the series, but I was getting a bit sick of the weekly pactio session. I'll be truly disappointed if the serious things don't start after this though (anything but a memory deletion, please...).

I thought the episode was rather good overall. we're finally shown a bit of the Setsuna/Konoka relationship! And I thought Yue didn't get too bad of a development. After what's been said in the episode, I thought that her embarrassment was partly caused by Nodoka's feelings towards Negi... But yes, only partly, so it does sound a bit weaker than in the manga.

Perhaps the frog and cat will meet horrible gruesome endings to prevent their report and we can get on with the rest of our lives (or at least watch the series in peace without those two).

At the moment, this series rates "good fun, but ultimately disappointing" in regard to the characters themselves. I just got volume 12 of the manga and it appears to be chock full of Setsuna goodness and Evangeline naughtiness amongst a lot of other stuff. A lot of the sort of stuff that would have been great to animate.

thats the only flaw with this series imo...too much fun and not enough serious development/plot line when its needed...i havent seen this ep yet but by the looks of it it seems pretty bad i think the randomness is beginning to get onto everyone's head ~

edit: oh sh*t! well the ep itself was pretty average ~ mainly focusing on chasing yue but the last few minutes ~

omg! everyone finds out about negi being a mage and he gets turned into an animal O.o to make matters worse some dark force decides to attack the group...i detect a mass pactio/brain washing scene in the next ep O.o

I kinda agree on this. To me, one of this show's main problems isn't the randomness of the series (which I definitely prefer over the fanservice-based humor of the manga), but rather the fact that in episodes where I prefer to have character development (i.e. the Sayo episode and this episode), SHAFT seems to prefer "non-Ministra Magi" student appearences over character development (although in this episode, most of the problem involves SHAFT not putting too much emphansize on Yue's reasons why she doesn't want to kiss Negi and making Nodoka, who is very important to the manga version of Yue's Pactio story, a minor character in this episode).

if you add the fact that shaft just nuked character original past/back story, it is indeed quite hard that they would create a real character development, except the relationship with negi bouzu ~~ (at least, they tried a bit with konoka and setsuna... in their own way)

so, they most likely sealed how the characters are protrayed from the start

It just means that Negima fans will continue to request and hope for an anime interpretation that carries some of the manga's flavor to the screen. Even if they do enjoy the hell out of this happy fluff series

I love how they've stayed with Haruna's pactio power from the manga - i pretty much believe its the best one out of the whole bunch. :3

About the Yue issue, it makes sense they'd change her reason of not wanting to kiss Negi from the original story.. though it just looks so false. Its at this point in the series when i have to forget the characters came from a source, and just see it as a new set all together.

Anyway, yet another great episode. Gotta love how they ended it.. talk about your major turn arounds - it had to happen though, what with how many girls were finding out. ^^;

Actually, with this version actually remembering to give proper Pactios to Nodoka, Konoka, and Setsuna (and the fact that will most likely not do an anime version of the tedious Mahora Festival arc), I'm pretty much satisfied with the new series, although there's still room for improvement when it comes to the original story.

The more I watch this series, the more I think it should be watched surface only: the colors, screenplay, character interaction. I don't think anyone can complain about the visuals. With character interaction, I don't mean character backgrounds. I mean the interactions between characters: hyperactive Asuna vs Kamo, shy but in-love Nodoka, Ayaka and her Negi-merchandise, etc. That's why I think Shaft has amplified the personalities of each character - for us to enjoy the "characters."

Well, that's my 2 cents about where this series is going. About the episode itself, I liked it better than 10 or 11. Especially when

Personally,

the "best kiss of the series" so far IMO is the one between Negi and Nodoka in episode 4 (I waited 1 1/2 years for Nodoka to make a proper Pactio in the anime, and SHAFT made sure the wait was worth it with a kiss that is so passionate, that Chamo has to inform Negi and Nodoka that the Pactio has been made and that they can stop kissing). As for second, that goes to the twins' Pactio kisses (not only was it unexpected from a Negima fan's viewpoint, but also the pastel coloring of the scene brings out some cuteness from the twins).

This episode wins a few points for the lovely Setsuna-Konochan opening (and their moments in the episode)... plus the Eva/Chach/Takamichi "mad hatter"style tea party they seem to be ever-immersed in.
