Fan service: Good or bad?

I personally don't care as long as the service don't go over board for me. And for those who think its good state which fan service scene in an anime that you liked. and for those who think its bad tell us why you think its bad besides the obvious "because its stupid" excuse.

I think some fan service can be a good thing, as well as funny. For instance my very FAVE scene is in Interlude When Tama got thrown into the ladies boobs and her face stuck there on the subway. That was totally accidental and funny. Also in Mai Hime when Natsuki's(sp) skirt got blown up. Just me but even Love Love? was funny with the accidents especially when the girl landed on him and he went "Puffy Puffy" and later the other girl he went "boing boing" I lmao at those, I don't find them bothersome.

even excessive fan service can be funny (like in Cutie Honey). The only bad type of fan service to me is with little kids.... pedophile is wrong.... and creepy.... stop it.... end of message.

Fanservice is good as long as it stays cute and funny, but it turn bad when it starts getting too ecchi. Its kind of done for comedic purposes, and not too serious, difficult to explain...

My opinions about some series:
DearS - I could have enjoyed this series a lot more without that teacher, too ecchi for my tastes.
Ai Yori Aoshi - fanservice ruined the story.
Onegai Teacher - just the right amount of fanservice.
Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai - yes, a lot of fanservice, but funny.

Fan service, eh? I'm guessing that's similar to Ecchi?

Scuse' my noobness. I don't mind it so much as long as it's not overdone, though most animes are better off without it.

Example of Fan Service(From Neon Genesis Evangelion): When Shinji stumbles and falls on Ayanami, putting his hand on her breast after she tries to get Gendo's glasses from him.

Pretty much anything that involves playing to what a fan in general wants, i.e. certain characters becoming intimate.

Anyway, I'll admit that I despise all kinds of fan service, simply because I'd rather they worry about(this is a reach)a better plot rather than playing to what a fan would like.

i hate fanservice if it takes away the mood of the atmosphere...especially in serious animes.

I don't mind fanservice as long as the PLOT isn't built around it (aka Tenjou and FMP 2....). Doing that makes the show suck EXTREMELY BAD....>.>

I actually prefer it when the show is built around it, like Agent Akia, or a good comedy, rather than when it is just stuck on a more serious anime or where it just seems out of place.

It's kind of like porn and regular movies, I don't want to watch a porn star try to act, and I hate when in the middle of a drama or action movie they throw in a love scene, to me love scenes just wreck the whole flow of movies.

So if the fan service feels right and the show flows it's ok, but if it feels out of place or breaks the flow then I don't like it.

fan service is alright when it is done tastefully or when the viewer doesn't really notice the fanservice because its not overly done such in Vandread or in Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai (though some points I thought the fan service went way too far *cough* shower scene *cough*).

If it is all the plot has to offer or is done in every frame then it can be annoying and ruin a good show. (Baku Ten)

I don't think there is any "correct" determinant factors for defining "good" or "bad" fanservice. Is fanservice good? HELL yes!.. Let me finish. Depending only on the consideratin of the intended viewers. I don't find fanservice good if they are forced on me and becomes predictable, like in Ikkitousen or Tenjou Tenge where I must find out what color of their panties are whenever the girls decide to take a sudden turn and try to dazzle the eyes with their shiny boobs. Good examples of fanservice are usually associated with strong comedic plot such as Yumeria.

I dont like it, and I steer clear of any anime that has it. I dont doubt the comedic value it might hold if done correctly, but I dont watch anime for comedy, so its not my thing.

Hate it. Fanservice used as a running gag for a show gets annoying and desperate. If I wanted all that, I'd be watching porn. What really aggravates me is how most of the new comedy series coming out heavily rely on fanservice. Its just like..the same things over and over again except with enough changes to make it look like a new series altogether (Example: Final Approach compared to Rizelmine).
Theres enough stereotypes in these types of titles to actually get assume that these people are using ready-made templates to create these series for churning in the money, then actually thinking up something that hasn't been beaten to death already.
You also have to put into consideration that most of these girls in the cutesy excessive fanservice shows are drawn to look like..they're twelve or something, three-four years than they are.

So to my conclusion: Fan service is Extremely-Super-Ultra Softcore Animated Child Porn masquerading as legitimate series

For me, it can be good sometimes and bad other times. I like some types of fanservice.

There is fanservice of the cuteness variety. That's something I like.

Negima! has plenty of fanservice of the Latin-language variety. Latin is one of my favorite languages!

Maria-sama ga Miteru has lots of shōjo-ai-ish fanservice. Yes, I like that kind, too.

Mai of Kanon is associated with fanservice of the girls-with-swords variety. That variety is great, I think!

You can find fanservice of the of the classical-mythology and astronomy varieties in Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn. That is one of the reasons I like that series.

There is the fanservice of the ever-popular sexual variety. (Most of the people who posted in this thread were thinking of that variety.) Sometimes I like it. I like it best when there are bikini girls! YAY!

I personally do not like fanservice, I think it can ruin some series such as Girls Bravo, DearS, Popotan, etc. It hinders the story, expecially in Popotan. That series could have been wonderful, though they went a little overboard on the nudity and fanservice. I'm seeing too many series lately being driven by fanservice and I was really sad to find out Mai-HiME contained so much.

Tolerable in small quantities if it's done with good taste, which is like never. And it's the reason why I don't watch MTV.

It really depends on the anime and the situation.

I really really hate it when they delibrately do unnesscery upskirt pantie scenes when it's a serious moment.
