Warning: Please try to watch this alone or with people who share your "perverted" interests in this genre, or you will find it very hard to struggle against holding back your muffled giggled all the time in a crowd, as I have found out unfortunately. XDDD

Kanako is really the ultimate epic spoof of the naive yuri girls-school outsider protagonist. In the eye-catch she still reveals she's glad even when being bullied because "they're beautiful girls", and then she gets all moe with herself putting on the nekomimi when she's supposed to look for Mariya's rosario.

And finally she gets her wish by having not one, but two girls confessing to her. OK, strictly speaking, they're not really confessing their "love", but this being Kanako, she doesn't care. lol

And what's with this series and otherworldly creatures? First there's the "security device" Mariya placed in Kanako's new bag to deter any would be bullies to sabotage her bag. (LOL at the unseen monster complaining he didn't eat enough when the bullies stuff got taken by it) And then there's Yonakuni nurturing the seaweed into some WTF moving menace, which actually goes on to attack the main cast and giving us our first cliffhanger just like that.

The more I see the OP and ED, the more I like their flamboyant style. I can understand why that same "Shaft style" within the episodes themselves seems to polarise fans, but this episode seems to deliver the goods, the laughs for me so far, despite Mariya himself lacking any action.

Maria Holic is a Media Factory Inc. production. Anime Suki does not list any MFI torrents.

For more information regarding MFI and AnimeSuki, please see this thread.

Not only that but they also removed the OP animation from YouTube ... damn and I really wanted to embed that video in my blog!

Is his real name Mariya? Kind of an embarrassing thing for a parent to call a child. Kanako reminds me of Tamaki with her imagination. Except worse.

We have absolutely no reason to think otherwise.

Even if some japanese names are typically female or male, it doesn't prevent the Japanese to use them arbitrarly (pretty much how some of them are toying like nuts with the Kanji).

My first time running into this company, very dumb move on their part, at least when it comes to posting the opening online. That's like.... free advertising and nothing more. What would they have to lose?

Not when you consider his name in kanji 鞠也 just happens to sound the same with the feminine European name Mariya, but the kanji for those two characters are gender neutral.

My biggest annoyance with this show is that it is a waste of a yuri anime. We don't get enough yuri anime for them to do this. Nice production values too, which is even more disappointing.

I'd much rather have seen an adaption of Strawberry Shake: hilarious manga that also has a fantasizing over-the-top yuri girl. It also pokes fun at itself and yuri in general, but it is actually a yuri manga. You can't take anything seriously in Maria+Holic.

I don't think I suggested that it wasn't satirical, so I don't understand your use of "actually."

It's because you suggested that it is a yuri show and hence a waste of one. The "actually" stresses that it is not a yuri show, but a satire of that genre.

Gunna have to echo the "this is not really a yuri show but a satire" thing.

Btw, about this as a parody, a friend has pointed out some things before:
- There's a tall girl named Kanako in MariMite.
- There's a lesbian Japanese government member named Kanako.

It is a yuri show so far as the main character is into girls at an all-girls school. All informational sites will always list it as "yuri," and I think so far as that it is not unreasonable to say it is a "waste of a yuri anime." It could have been a real one. Instead we have such that I think only those who really don't like yuri at all enjoy it--or at least not as much as I do.

Me and a few manga readers made this connection last year, and i still think it's just looking to much into it.

& Maria†holic is not a yuri show. Just because the main character as an attration to girls at the school doesn't mean it is. A parody is the best way about it. Sigh, i'm not surprised we have the "could have been a real yuri show". It was never planned to be such a series, so just drop it with that line.
