The line up of "scantily glad girls" are Yuki Nagato (witch), Haruhi Suzumiya (bunny) and Mai (minor character) from the episode "Live Alive" from the first season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Yuki and Haruhi are two of the most popular female anime characters ever, hence the reference to "2D girls". If you haven't seen the series you might want to check it out, it's incredibly popular.

It's actually from the original dialogue. The thing was when Red Angel Media was dubbing it, they realize that most viewers wouldn't understand what the 2D Girls joke means (Of course Otaku's & Anime fans would get it but that's a different story.). So to keep the joke funny, they change the script of what Hayate said from liking 2d Girls to Girls from the Internet since most people would understand that joke (After all, Girls on the Internet are sexy indeed).

To me i didn't mind they change it. It's one of those case of "They Change it, Now its better!" since by changing Hayate "interest" to Anime Girls to Girls from the Internet, Instead of thinking Hayate's a weird Otaku, Ayumu now thinks Hayate is a no good, scumbag pervert!
