Not that long. You just joined one month earlier than I did, haha.

Anyway, there are a lot of strong performances in this game. It honestly makes the experience so much more engaging than the original game, IMO.

Am I right to assume this whole song describes Erika's character word-for-word?

If so, she sounds like an even more epic version of Baccano!'s Ladd Russo.

Easily the most despicable character I've ever seen. Everything about her makes me want to see her die horribly.

Well, that's kind of harsh. She is a pretty horrible person, but she doesn't really have much of an opportunity to be anything else given the situation she's in. I have a feeling she'd be much more likable if we could see her as a human before becoming Bern's piece.

Just nitpicking, but we already have a thread for music discussion so conversations regarding songs would be better suited there.

Good point. I'd probably get a lot more answers there anyway.

Anyway, the final QC started today, according the UminekoTweak Tumblr.

There's a translation in the captions of this Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTkizbbBoG4

But I don't know for certain how accurate it is. It looks slightly sloppy in places, but not incredibly awful.

So, all hope for Umineko localization is now shattered huh? Eh, even though I knew it was impossible, I still hoped for it to have happened. PSP games were also ignored and I had such high hope they would have been noticed.

Speaking of the PSP games, it seems that Alchemist canceled that project. There is not even a word of news, progress or even confirmation for a cancellation. That's quite irresponsible of them. I've been waiting for the Chiru port for PSP for a while now. Why is this franchise treated so badly, did it do so bad in Japan?

Well, in comparison to Higurashi it burned quite badly in Japan. It featured less content that can be outsourced for additional projects, less cute elements that can be sold as merchandise, it can't be consumed as contextless as Higurashi could, and in general it demanded more of it's readers compared to big brother Higu.

Especially Chiru, when it didn't deliver what consumers expected, sales dropped immensely.

I don't understand, Chiru is by far the strongest works Ryukishi ever wrote. I just can't grasp how Japanese didn't like it.

Higurashi is being ruined by DEEN every year, with their over-the-top OVAS that absolutely don't make any sense. Do those sell more? Does Rika cleaning a window with her butt appeal to large category of fans? Or that Outbreak. Complete nonsense, it was as if you put Higurashi characters in AMC's "The Walking Dead". It was almost insulting how different it was from the original source. And to think these are being sold more than Umineko...

Is it safe to assume that large portion of our fanbase is from the west side?

It's not like the Japanese audience didn't like it, just that the scope of people it would really appeal to was that much more narrow than Higurashi's. Ryukishi implied in an interview on his very own that he sold out a little with Higurashi and it's endless spin-offs.

The problem is that it alienated both the hardcore Higurashi fans, who expected more bloodshed and mayhem, or at least a proper dramatic conclusion a'la Tsumihoroboshi-hen and onwards, and the classical mystery fans who expected him to stick to mystery rules, conventions and the whole schtick, since he was referencing (especially famous Japanese mysteries) like crazy throughout the series.

The pool of people who are into meta-mysteries with a strong touch of anime'esque melodrama is really small.

So yes, this does appeal to a greater category, since no bigger investment in the series is necessary besides looking at sexy little loli-girls.
But well, with the new Higurashi spin-off chapter being released next Comiket, even the Japanese fanbase seems tired and screams of "Oh drop it already" are growing loud.

I'd say the West is still a representation of how it found an audience in Japan as well. There still seems to be a way bigger fanbase of Higurashi in the West as well, compared to the rather compact group of Umineko fans.

You know Alchemist is evil when they do this to you

I just realized there was a trailer for "portable 3" in portable 2. Sigh, I wish it wasn't canceled.

It always makes me chuckle a bit when I see this complaint. It's not like the first four episodes had a second opening that promised "No Knox, No Dine", etc. The only thing the games themselves promised was a battle between logic realistic explanations and magic fantasy explanations.

It wasn't until Chiru that they started trying to follow classic mystery rules, yet that's when everyone says it stopped doing so. 1-4 is far less structured and fair than 5-8.
