My other recommendation is actually a Korean trilogy. Known as the "Vengeance" trilogy by Chan Wook Park, the 3 movies are independent of each other storywise, but they share the vengeance/revenge theme. All 3 are very unpredictable and a bit shocking. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is a bit random in nature, but the threads come together in the end...probably the most unpredictable of the 3 and the most tragic. Basically about a deaf guy and his sister kidnapping a little girl for the ransom money so that they can pay for an operation. It is good , yet also the weakest of the 3 films. Oldboy is more of an action/mystery film and by far my favorite of the trilogy. The story starts off with the main character getting kidnapped right off the street and then being imprisoned for 15 years with only a TV to keep him occupied. Suddenly he is released with no explanations and no idea of where he has been. Naturally he's goes to find out who imprisoned him, why, and kick their ass. I highly recommend that you check this one out. Let me also emphasis here: be extremely careful of spoilers as it will ruin the entire film for you. This is my favorite of the 3. Lady Vengeance has a softer tone than the other 2 and the trials of the main character really pull at your heart strings. Despite that, the film can be quite funny at times. The main character has just been released from jail for kidnapping a little kid. The story is about her quest to get revenge, her reunion with her daughter, the friendships she made in jail, and her reconciliation with her past. It has also been said that Lady Vengeance is in some ways the most brutal of the 3 films. Last edited by cerrian; 2008-06-11 at 18:16. Reason: grammer |

Guess I should give some anime recommendations as well.
You might want to check out Last Exile and Scrapped Princess. Both are adventurous fantasies. Last Exile is more steampunkish and has a bit more of an epic tale while Scrapped Princess has more comedy, lovable characters, and a mixture of fantasy/sci-fi elements. Both have very unique plot lines, story elements, and very distinct characters. |
