I don't mind if it's an alternate method, but being forced to do things other than play games to play a game... that's just ridiculous.

The way I see it working would be for convenience, like a way to unlock certain things you would otherwise have to unlock through some intricate way in-game.

You mean you don't like being rewarded for using a device as it is intended to function (i.e. a portable being, you know, portable)? Anyways, like I said, for something that's supposedly going to be in all games, it's doubtful that it's going to be the only way to unlock things.

I don't know about you, but I don't carry my DS everywhere I go for no apparent reason. I only take it when I'm going to have time to use it, which usually means it's going to be in a bag or backpack, not my pocket. That usually negates 90% of the "pedometer" function that would actually count towards these achievement things.

Female-parent-fornicating region lock....

Oh well, at least all the good games are Japanese anyways, so only need one 3DS.

So now we have the first region-locked handheld? *sigh* And I had such high hopes about region locking when the PS3 became region free.

Second, people seem to be ignoring the fact that the DSi/Xl was also region locked.

It seems some games have gone through, but for example, a Japanese Pokemon Black/White game can only be played on a Japanese DSi. I suppose it's fair to say that it wasn't widespread, so it wasn't that much of a problem until now.

Black/White, while region locked on the DSi itself, could be played on any regular DS/Lite, though. I'm pretty sure the same goes for any other DSi games, too. So it wasn't really a big deal except for people who only owned a DSi.

Just want to point out, despite ps3 and psp are region free, sony did managed to impose an export/import ban to european nations. So what is the point of being region free, if you make it illegal to import software, openly, in the first place? In this matter both japanese companies are screwed up, trying to please publishers/regional license holders and not to appear as the bad boys in front of consumers. Same with MS, leaving region locking up to the publishers.

DSi enhanced software are region lock on DSi systems, not on DS. DSi (only) software is region locked, but those game can only be played with DSi machines anyway, examples are game that make use of the camera, or requires the extra processing power that the DSi has to offer.

I don't like it. It'll mean almost all games will have some extras to unlock this way, similar to how every Xbox 360 game needs to distribute 100 gamerscore in achievements. I foresee ridiculous extras, requirements, or even gameplay mechanics arising with this system.

Where's the outrage taking place so we can convince Nintendo to change their mind?

Gotta be honest region locking isn't really a BFD to me, I only imported a tales of game and SRW for the ds anyway.

I'd have to see what the game libraries are before deciding if it were a big deal to me. I have about a 60/40 ratio of English/Japanese games for my DS, so it's hard to say. Granted I only have like 12 DS games, but still.

Jump Ultimate Stars 3D, please?

As much as I defended 3DS in the past, I couldn't excuse region-locking. Granted, Nintendo INVENTED the concept, so you can't blame them for doing what they have been doing for years. But it is disheartening that I can not import American translated games for 3DS.

Sometimes I wonder if the Japanese even knows we Australians exist.
