Anybody know what this guy is on about? I've watched a lot of anime from a variety of encoders using my nVidia 9500 card and VDPAU. Whatever problem he's describing isn't visible here. Maybe it's just my ageing eyesight?

MPlayer w/ VDPAU cannot playback H.264 video with B-frames if they're used within an AVI container. This doesn't really matter though... there isn't a lot of H.264 content in AVI containers.

Dunno, I've never had any problems with a H.264 clip in VDPAU, and I've watched ALOT of H.264 material :s Well, actually, I had a problem once with first season of Clannad (quite old version of VDPAU too), in those cases XVideo/ffh264 come to the rescue. I've had more troubles with CCCP than MPlayer imo. It's a also a good idea to keep your MPlayer very updated.

well no one should be putting h.264 in avi containers anyway so my advice to them is that they can just leave that issue alone...

Not yet, but here are the directions.

To get everything to work with MPlayer, follow these steps:

* Get build dependencies: sudo apt-get build-dep libass3 && sudo apt-get build-dep mplayer

* Get libass build and install it: git clone git://greg.geekmind.org/libass.git && cd libass && ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr && make && sudo make install

* Get patched MPlayer, build and install it: git clone git://greg.geekmind.org/mplayer.git && cd mplayer && git checkout libass && ./configure --prefix=/usr && make && sudo make install
Help, i have trouble compiling it.
i have try it twice, using git://greg.geekmind.org/mplayer.git & git://git.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg/ from yesterday and now.

here the error log -> http://pastebin.com/m7ef8ff97

btw, can you give me your compileable source in tar.bz2 for me?

Thanks before and after

ps: sory for my bad english.

There's a new method now.

Then follow the readme.

I could give you a tarball, but it wouldn't be any different in terms of compilation.

Huff, http://repo.or.cz/ is down from yesterday night till i post now.....
btw, just for tried to see new libass feature, i tried compile vlc-1.0.1 with libass-0.9.7, but i still cannot compile it, it not competible with libass-0.9.7, i have to use libass-0.9.6, buat this vlc+libass-0.9.6 cannot show subtitle at all, and very very slow for playing bake-op.mkv

FYI, i can saw subtitle with mplayer SVN-r29545 (export from 2009-08-23), but not as good as in screenshot you mention before.

i hope , you could give me your source code, if that's still not compileable.
i will give up....
and i hope greg will give nice tutorial or working mplayer patch.

thanks before and after.

ps: sory for my bad english.

It is down yes. Use that mplayer-build when it comes up. I have been using it for a while now and it compiles easily. Just make sure to read the readme as it is not a normal build. It also includes ffmpeg-mt if you have a multiple core processor for faster decoding of things like h264.

I just want to get libass feature.
If you have build it, can you test using this bake-op
and see the subtitle work better as seen in this http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/1479/shot0006.png ?

btw, I don't have dual core based proc so i don't need ffmpeg-mt, My Computer use Old Sempron 2200+ (Socket A version with 1,5Ghz and without sse2) can play H264 720p without problem, it play very smooth.

thank's before and after.

Don't bother attempting to get vlc 1.0.1 working with libass 0.9.7 or the latest libass git version. I tried a few weeks ago and was mortified at the results. Most things only worked sporadically and even when they did, rendering was noticeably off and different across operating systems.

If you want to test out the latest libass features with vlc, you're best bet is to use the vlc git (pre 1.1.0) and the libass git (pre 0.9.8). This will work quite nicely provided you have all the build dependencies, libraries, and compilation options set properly. Rendering will be near perfect if you do.

In the end though, I recommend using the mplayer-build code tree.

Yeah, i never use vlc, i love mplayer , and never tried to use other video player, except Xine in the past.
I just too curious with new libass feature, so i tried to build it with vlc, but it not works and give to much error subtitle log in console.

about vlc git and libass git, i will try it tomorow, if http://repo.or.cz/ still down.

huff, why http://repo.or.cz/ is still down...

Help, it still not compileable...

and this git thing is make me nuts, couse my 64kbps conection keep give me trouble to get it.
i have to do manualy download via web browser and redirect my webbrowser to use Toonel

I can get git http://repo.or.cz/r/mplayer-build.git and git git://repo.or.cz/libass.git
after that i had to download git://repo.or.cz/mplayer.git and git://repo.or.cz/FFMpeg-mirror/mplayer-patches.git
via web browser using this link:
mplayer
ffmpeg-git-snapshot
then i extract it and put it inside mplayer-build folder.
Code:
[root@localhost mplayer-build]# ls
build_libs/ common_options disable-mt* ffmpeg/ ffmpeg-mt/ init* Makefile mplayer_options script/
clean* debian/ enable-mt* ffmpeg_build/ ffmpeg_options libass/ mplayer/ README update*
[root@localhost mplayer-build]#
After that i type make, and get another error, it ffmpeg error in scripts/ffmpeg. i have to delete --cpu=native from that script to get scripts/ffmpeg working.
Than after that, i got error again in ffmpeg, if thereis no swscale.h, and i after looking inside libswscale, its empty, so i copy libswscale folder from ffmpeg svn.

in libass, thereis no problem.

then it goes to mplayer ,and i got this error:
Code:
Checking for RealPlayer codecs ... yes (using /usr/lib/codecs)
Checking for QuickTime codecs ... yes
Checking for Nemesi Streaming Media libraries ... no

And i have to symlinks [b]ffmpeg[b] folder from ffmpeg in mplayer-build folder
Code:
[root@localhost mplayer-build]# ln -s ffmpeg mplayer/ffmpeg
and it compiled, but in the end, still got this error
http://pastebin.com/m7606f043

It doesn't work that way. The build scripts will first build ffmpeg and libass and afterwards MPlayer, which at the end links against these precompiled dependencies. By symlinking the ffmpeg directory into the MPlayer directory, you're trying to force it to use an integrated ffmpeg version, but this doesn't work at the moment with the build repository.

Remove the symlink and try to get ffmpeg to compile correctly.

I had problems compiling on Mac OSX Leopard, this is pretty much what I had to do (thanks to greg and maru):

--cpu=core2 in the ffmpeg-config and --cc=gcc-4.2 in common options did the trick, also if you are on a osx you need newer versions of autotools than the one shipping with leopard (if you use macports make sure the macports directories are at the very start of your path).

From the error message it looks like you are missing libavutil. Are you sure ffmpeg compiled correctly? (you should have libavutils.a in the build_libs/lib/ directory).

It's just a shot in the dark: are you using the "master" branch of the MPlayer repository? You need to use the "tmp_build" branch for everything to work correctly.
