Sports hooligans aren't exclusively British. You should see South American soccer riots.

I'm surprised that none of you have been talking about THIS ::

Quote:
On June 1, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the illegal streaming of copyrighted material, with testimony from Maria Pallante (Acting U.S. Register of Copyrights), Sandra Aistars (Executive Director, Copyright Alliance), and Michael O’Leary (Executive Vice President, Motion Picture Association of America). Under current law, streaming may be considered a public performance, and therefore ineligible for felony penalties.
In March, IP Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel recommended legislation to allow for felony penalties for streaming, and Sens. Klobuchar, Cornyn, and Coons introduced a Senate bill to do this (S. 978) in May.
The witnesses at House Judiciary Committee hearing indicated that they would support House legislation to make unauthorized streaming a felony. Reps. Watt and Lofgren noted that the scope of the legislation in the Senate has been criticized as being too broad.

I heard that the Vancouver City Council is planning on re-naming the city to either Los Angeles or Detroit.

There hasn't been a major riot in Detroit since the 60s. Find a new city to spit on already.

U.S. Faces Legal Challenge to Internet-Domain Seizures

"One of Spain’s most popular websites, whose American domains were seized as
part of a crackdown on internet piracy, asked a U.S. judge Monday to return its
property that it claims was wrongly taken.

The Rojadirecta .com and .org domains were seized in January along with eight
others connected to broadcasting pirated streams of professional sports.

The legal filing in New York federal court by site owner Puerto 80 Projects
represents what is believed to be the first courthouse challenge to “Operation in
Our Sites.” Commenced last year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has
seized as many as 208 domains the authorities claim are linked to intellectual-
property fraud."

“Beware of Greeks Taking Gifts”

"Standard and Poor’s has downgraded Greece’s credit rating to “CCC … the
lowest credit rating of any economy ranked”. Germany now insists that it won’t
pick up the tab for another new Greek bailout unless all the other members of the
EU chip in. That includes Britain, which opted to stay out of the Euro and will now
be asked to bail it out notwithstanding. “Cameron and Osborne have often said
that the UK won’t participate in any way in the rescue of a Eurozone member
state,” said a European commission official. “But it cannot veto this.”

The tax on the UK taxpayer is going to be levied via the IMF, which may also
participate in a bailout and of which the US is also a member. The interlinkage of
structures now means that the taxpayer everywhere may now be on the hook for
government excess everywhere.

Marketwatch says US banks are exposed to the tune of $41 billion in Greece. But
that is chickenfeed compared to the looming threat it poses to European financial
institutions."

Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu weighs in on riot.

Based on the video footage, I have to dispute the characterizing of this as "just the kind of anarchists we got during the Olympics". Certainly we had many troublemakers from outside the city and they're the ones that really got things moving, but there were an awful lot of drunken idiots and attention whores posing for photos and treating it as a huge party. Whereas during the Olympics everyone was quite happy to steer clear of the anarchists and let the (huge) police presence deal with them.

Thankfully, many of those involved seem to have more bravado than brains (ie. bragging about torching cars on Facebook).

China central bank finds officials stole billions

Quote:
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Corrupt Chinese officials and employees of state-owned companies have absconded with about 800 billion yuan ($123.7 billion) of public money over 15 years through 2008, much of it making its way to the U.S., Canada, Australia and the Netherlands, according to Chinese news reports citing a central bank study.

The 67-page report, completed in 2008, was posted on the People’s Bank of China’s website this week, purportedly by mistake, and has since been taken down, although PDFs of the document are circulating in cyberspace.

Alibaba announces a major restructuring of its e-commerce unit Taobao, and Sina's CEO defends China governance as concern lingers over the future of his own company.

In the report, which appears never to have been intended for public release, the PBOC estimated about 16,000 to 18,000 individuals have fled the country with ill-gotten funds over a 15-year period leading up to the report’s release, according to news-media accounts.

The PBOC focused upon where people went and how they got the embezzled funds out of the country.

One method, the study was cited as saying, was with the help of family or other trusted individuals who emigrated overseas, often using fake documents.

The report was also cited as saying some of the money was smuggled into the former Portuguese colony of Macau, now the world’s biggest gambling hub, where it was laundered through casinos and then used to fund lavish lifestyles abroad.

Once reported anecdote involved the case of Zhang Jian, a former Communist Party official in Jiangsu province, who visited Macau 48 times over a two-year period.

A report in The Australian, meanwhile, cited a passage in the central-bank study saying officials were crossing over the border at Shenzhen, bearing suitcases of bank notes “like ants moving houses.”

The PBOC said in the report it planned to work more closely with foreign governments to block the officials from escaping with looted funds. It also said it has increasingly begun to take part in international anti-money-laundering organizations.

The report won the top prize at the China Society for Finance and Banking’s annual awards for research and was posted on the PBOC’s website, though removed a short time later after it made headlines in domestic news media, according to The Australian’s account.

Nothing new, but the scale is kind of surprising. Though it's over a period of 15 years.
