From the singular flashback, and later info:
- the test subject girls "B" list were being transported from one JSDF base to another
- there were doctors and scientists with clearance also being transported
- the "B" girls were slated for destruction, as their special powers were subpar
- one of these doctors or scientists was a traitor, Akane, who handed Neko Kuroha a package with the alien embryo and smartphone
- Akane died, crushed under one of the transports
- we were told 27 girls escaped
- somehow each of the girls split up into singles or pairs, each with enough death suppression pills for 2 weeks
- most test subject girls died from lack of pills or being recaptured days later

One full month of death suppression pills for each test subject girl alone would have been 810 pills, which is more than a few 150-pill or 300-pill bottles. So the transport would have been prepared to make an emergency stop somewhere not their final destination (and the FINAL final destination for all of the "B" girls). Hence more pills than usual being transported with the girls. One week of pills is 5.6 per girl.

Either the test subject girls were released by Akane, or someone helped Akane, or there was a terrific car accident to make all the transports crash. Maybe one of the girls used her powers, once released. Maybe it was accidental. But the result is several transports reduced to slag, all the scientists and drivers dead, and the test subject girls escaped to start our timeline of events.

Oh Kotori... XD I kind of imagined her sounding more "matter of fact" when she demonstrates her powers and hung up immediately, not slightly apologetic. "These are my powers. Cool right!*__*" -hangs up- "I hang up after one use ^_^" -"So uuuselesss." That scene cracked me up in the manga, but wasn't as funny animated.

I don't remember Kuroha blubbering out "magic!" After she blows up that table, but if she did do that in the manga, then well.. One stupid point for her.
That said, the girls are mostly pretty careless, bordering on stupid in the eyes of a worldly viewer, but it needs to be remembered that they have very little to no life experience. What is learned common sense to us, like hiding your harnest or how to go be careful are things they never had a chance to learn- they were in a lab all of their lives, they don't have any survival skills or much of an understanding of these things. This group is just lucky- including having found a sensible person to help them.

Of course some of it is probably due to stupid writing. But I can excuse a lot of instances of the girls being stupid based on the above.

Is that power useless? I think it is quite useful and deadly. If, say, Kotori puts herself in a dangerous position - jump off a building for example, then switch places with someone, that someone is going to die really quickly.

No, I was referring to the cast's reaction when she demonstrated it, which was clearly intended as a joke. The delivery kind of fell flat in the anime though.

It's quite obvious that it's not actually useless in practice.

After all that build-up, it's disappointing the AA+ witch Kikako is only able to shoot an energy ball thingy. Really? That's it? It looks powerful, but it's not as if that much firepower is required. Conventional small arms could do the same job. In episode 1, we saw a witch and her friend captured in a convoy of JSDF vehicles. It seems the bad guys are forgetting they can simply send out soldiers, but instead the bad guys are resorting to villian-of-the-week witches.

When Kikako walks around blasting her surroundings, who is going to catch all those civilians witnessing her destruction? Didn't the anime say witnesses have to be killed as well? With that amount of blasting going around, surely there would be a whole bunch of witnesses. Yeah, Kikako just shot an energy blast through the building Shino is hiding in and hit a mountain. And there's a whole bunch of buildings at the foot of that mountain! Is the anime trying to tell the viewers that the townsfolk are used to random explosions in their neighborhood?

Kikako's attack is impressively powerful, and I can see why it would freak people out a bit. But if that's her only power, the tactics for defeating her is very straightforward.

Hint: I'm pretty confident that two NFL players (ideally one being a Running Back or a Wide Receiver) could defeat Kikako. Again, assuming that's her only power/special ability.

I don't see two NFL players having a chance. She can just swap place with someone from far distance. Because her ability has many possibilities, it is limited to one time use. She would hang up just once. So, more people mean they have more chance to corner her.

So, the AA+ magic user is another girl. It's sad that Kuroneko has to witness her friend's death, even Kuroneko wants to save her friend.

You're getting the names mixed up. Kikako is the laser-girl with shark teeth who slowly shambles forward in a straight line like an old-school zombie and seems to shoot once every couple of minutes.

hahaha... Kotori really stirred up this show....
She and Kazumi would be interesting characters that could cheer up the setting of this show (since Kuroha and Kana are too depressing to be watched)

anyway, I just can't believe how clumsy are all of them.. to think Kana would start to talk and state her condition in front of Kotori, Kuroha said "magic" word, and Kotori would be clumsy enough to show her harness.... Kazumi really is the only one who reliable to Murakami so far

Kikako is scary.... thanks god that so far all the "bad" magicians are ugly girls.... too bad that they killed so many adorable girls...

I'm expecting Kuroneko and Murakami to be the only one who survived in the end of the series

Came very late with my reviews, so I'm trying to catch up to the current episode pace.

My interpretation of their suppression pill is preventing these test subjects from explosion. They started bleed when the pill's effect worn out. It is as they are living in the outer space. The lack of external pressure force will injured them.

Is to be expected from me, since like most fans Elfen Lied made an impression upon me, and couldn't help myself to start comparing Brynhildr with the former being that both stories are written by Okamoto-sensei.

As you previously posted, Brynhildr is way more lighthearted, nonetheless, there is this aura of doom felt lurking from episode to episode, and the third episode built it up nicely up to climax at the end of that episode which closes in a cliffhanger.

The girls's bodies will begin to disintegrate, likely at cellullar level, after 30 hours without the pills, and after 35 hours they'll suffer the worst of fate similar to the Incredible Melting Man monster.

Now, with the harness, since it's been weeks that many of you posted your guesses, assumptions, and theories on what does the third switch on top does when pressed:
1. Either it accelerates the chain reaction within the Magician's body, causing the Magician to instantaneously melt or being teared apart literally.
Plausible, since Kuroneko refer to pressing the third switch as something worse than death.

2. Or pressing the top switch releases all the blocks and wedges within the Magician, triggering on her the effect at unleashing her powers to full extent. Hence, it'll also cause the Magician's consciousness getting overwhelmed by her powers, turning into a berseker of sorts wanting nothing short than pure destruction and rampaging.

Lastly, since the writer doesn't want to beat too much around the bush with introducing further memory arcs involving Ryota's past with Kuroneko, then it was revealed in the third episode that Kuroha and Kuroneko are one and the same person.
Still, we may have need of a sort of flashback story explaining how did Kuroha managed to survive the fall at the dam, and how come she ended up in the laboratory being turned into a Magician.

I wonder about that third switch... What if it's beneficial? There's no reason to tell them it's worse than death, unless they want them to not try pressing it. If it was something really horrid, they could just tell them what it is. You will boil up from the inside out over a period of 72 hours without losing consciousness while the cooked remains of your flesh turn into nourishment for the construction of the body of an alien monstrosity that will henceforth use your fully conscious brain as a centre of operations. Or something...
Whatever it is, if it's really bad for them, unless it is also really bad for the scientists, there is no reason to be so cryptic. It seems to me that they really don't want the girls to press that button, but reserve that privilege to themselves.

They should try it on someone they know they won't save or turn to their cause. Harsh, but it's a tough world out there.

As for how Kuroneko ended up there... Hm.. I imagine it's somehow similar for all those girls. They were injured and declared dead officially by corroborating doctors, they could be orphans, they could be abducted. It's not like they would have gotten many kids legally to perform experiments on, they must have resorted to means like that. Abductions always appear on the news, so that's ineffective. Taking critically ill or injured kids by just pretending to their parents that they died and orphans they can rewrite the paperwork for seems simplest. Maybe from parents who have a low profile, little means and possibly no insurance.
If they pretend to themselves that they are being ethical, it will be the injured or ill kids they go for, since they would "die anyways" without their intervention.
That's my guess :/

Heres what i think kuroneko was still alive when she was brought over to the lab.she still has fragments of her memorys from when she was a child . They killed her and put that alien inside her and whats controlling her now is the alien. What we are seeing is the aliens personality not kuronekos however she has memory fragments of her childhood. The other girls are different they were dead bodies given for the lab. I think they were lied to about that 3rd button and those pills were a safety net to prevent something awful from happening.

That's kind of the problem with these super-powered shows where the powers are treated as godlike... but they aren't, really. Regular, real world tactics would do the job much better. The future predicting thing makes success difficult, but honestly, it'd be easier to send in a bunch of soldiers and overcome the future prediction than sending in mouth cannon girl.

Then again, this show isn't even attempting to be realistic or take itself all that seriously, so whatever.

If you called in the JSDF they might want a "favor" later on. By tracking down the escapees "in-house", you minimize the payoffs and favors. Even collateral damage is better than direct involvement from others.

I just realised something... Little Kuroneko said she had already seen an alien. Assuming she wasn't lying and that's true.. If she came into contact with those aliens before she ever came to the lab, was she even fully human before the accident?

Heres how i see it theres 2 different entities existing in the same body the alien and kuronekos.im not sure what full story about kuroneko seeing the aliens i would say she is still human. But whats important to understand the lab doesnt care about the girls it whats inside them thats important. Im assuming that 3rd button unlocks abilities and the witches were lied to. However the witches like kana kazumi kotori they were dead bodies given to them. The cute girl aspect is used to hide what they really are.
