I have never heard of switching writers in the middle of a route. And those genre shifts is actually pretty typical of Ryukishi (Both Umineko and Higurashi has it's fair share of romantic and sweet scenes but also scary or generally weird scenes).

Ok, I think I have something worth discussing now. I've done a lot of thinking and I think I understand the themes, the plot, and the conflicting ideals almost to a point in Lucia's route now. I hope I can be done worrying about her route for now. Be prepared for length.

Spoiler for Searching for meaning in Lucia's Route:

There is one main theme of this route, and that is having meaning in your life, to be useful, to be able to make a contribution to something. This is a question that Lucia has always posed to herself, "Do I have any worth, do I have a duty to carry out?" And within this main theme, there are two conflicting sub themes, does love have enough meaning to live for by itself? And is love more or less important than making a contribution to something as important as mankind? The biggest problem with this route is that these questions are posed but never answered. And as far as true love is concerned, which seems to triumph at the end, it is undermined by the plot itself.

So let's talk about the love story conflicting with it self first as that is what I have mostly been torturing myself over in the last few posts.
(As a precept, the reason that I care so much is that I think this date scene is perfect and up until that point this story has set up everything perfectly to be a wonderful true love story. To be able to read a true love story with a heroine of your dreams would exceed all the expectations I have for a game. As far as reading VNs goes this is like the holy grail.)

The most contradictory statement I find in this entire game so far is that Lucia can't live without Koutaro and that Koutaro can live without Lucia. I never understood either of these two meanings, they are key to her actions but they are both contradicted. Lucia believes that she can't live without Koutaro. Conversely, Lucia knows that Koutaro cares for her, so how can she really believe that Koutaro can live without her the same way that she can't live without Koutaro? During the date, they both established that they liked each other. Koutaro shows her affection in that he likes her and those feelings are not related at all to pity, Lucia even says afterwards that she'll never forget those words. So I don't see the basis for Lucia truly believing that Koutaro would be fine without her. She even knows Koutaro is thinking about her all the time because she's afraid of reading her phone. If Koutaro is so important to her that she can't live without him and knowing that Koutaro wanted to be with her so badly that she was sure not to check her phone, so that she wouldn't want to carry out what she was about to do, and if all she really wants is for Koutaro to need her. Why wouldn't she want to understand Koutaro's feelings better? And how can she believe that Koutaro doesn't really need her? She knows Koutaro likes her, and he is more important than life to her, so why would she hurt him? And even if she has some doubts that Koutaro may one day leave her, she just isn't sure, the statement that Koutaro doesn't need her isn't set in stone but in the route she acts like it is. Lucia knowingly brings Koutaro to the sunflower field where her body will start releasing poison in catastrophic quantities and possibly killing Koutaro. If she loves him, would she do this? And then she swung at Koutaro with intent to kill at the top of the tower. By showing that Lucia is willing to Koutaro twice, it just destroys any basis which this true love story can be based on. If she truly believes she can't live without him, could she possibly kill him herself? If she loves him, would she go against all of his wishes and kill him?

Now that is only half of the problem with this route. So far it seems that true love is ruled out as the main theme, the main thing that Lucia has wanted all along is meaning, to be able to make a contribution and to follow her duty. Why she gasses an entire city is to get rid of the power spot and help save mankind. However in doing this, she goes against herself, and against Koutaro. In her past at the church, she is tormented over the fact that she has killed innocent living things. She created the legend of the cursed girl so she could forget about this fact. Now she is willing to obey orders and go against everything she hates in order to make this lone contribution. In doing so, she destroys her own psyche, gets rid of her ability to control her poison, and has literally signed a contract to die from despair and guilt. While doing this she decides to spend her last moments with Koutaro and possibly killing him in the process at the sunflower field. By doing this she has chosen to do her duty over love.

So perhaps the main theme of this story should be duty over love? But wait, earlier it is said that she believed that Koutaro does not love her enough to be with her forever. So what's important to Lucia isn't that she loves him, but that he loves her, and if Koutaro only merely "likes" her, she is willing to kill him and herself. So what might seem as duty being more important than love, is never a question that is really answered, as Lucia doesn't really believe that they have a true mutual love. The theme of duty vs love is never answered, as Lucia never has to make the decision between the two as she doesnt believe Koutaro really loves her.

Their story doesn't end there though. After taking the theme of true love and slicing it in half with a katana, they decide to sew it back together. So in the end love seems to have finally won. Lucia is content to live for Koutaro as long as Koutaro is content to live for her. They are connected forever, and that if either dies the other dies, their lives are linked. Lucia must live on so that Koutaro can live. Finally a true love story! But noooooo!!! Perhaps they love eachother now, but as far as this story being about True Love or being about Duty, Lucia loved Koutaro but she was willing to kill him, she also half heartedly chose duty over love. You cannot really say that this is a love triumphs over all story. If Koutaro did not have his power, he would be dead, love would not have been victorious.

I can't come to any other conclusion other than that the route is poorly written toward the end and inconclusive. True love is not a theme of the story. And I don't think they'll try to conclude whether duty or love is more important in the true route as it pertains to Lucia which is why I'm really really down. These questions were raised to me, they were at the forefront the entire time I read, the final scene seem to have focused on love, but this theme was betrayed by the plot.

Perhaps there is a more subtle meaning though that I've picked up from writing all of this. If Lucia had known sooner that Koutaro needed her to live, she would not have accompanied Brenda, or at least not tried to have killed Koutaro. So perhaps the meaning is to be more honest with yourself and your lover should you ever be so lucky to find one. Koutaro should have expressed how much she loved her from the beginning. And on the other side of the coin Lucia should have been more faithful in Koutaro's oaths to never leave her. I guess that's it, I can't find a better meaning that doesn't contradict itself. That theme was always there but seemed to be such a small focus. And the two grandiose themes, the two biggest questions that were raised to me, whether Duty or Love is more important and whether Love is the most important thing were not answered. That's unfortunate, as a reader that makes me feel disappointed. So many things were hoisted up as being the truth, but also contradicted, it seems to be poor writing. Honestly I would not care so much if I didn't fall love in love with this character during the date scene. I could just ignore this route then.

At this point before going into the true routes, all I care about is Lucia, which kind of sucks for the rest of the game. Lucia's deredere/nyaanyaa side coupled with the clean/fastidious/"I must make a use of myself attitude" makes her so admirable and likable. It had the workings of a great route but the basis for the two biggest themes lock horns with eachother and nothing else is said. And in the end this route is very very bitter. So many ugly scenes but mixed with a few very enjoyable and artistic ones. The writing was confusing and the story was so depressing, it tormented me and made me think a lot, it put a lot of regret and depression into me. There are good scenes but they feel like a lie with the other scenes. I said I would hesitate to buy the next Key game in a previous post, when a route puts me through this, can I really say this is something that I like?

I feel very bitter about this route and this game right now. I was in bliss, so enthralled with good feelings that I was afraid when this route would end. In retrospect I would have been more happy if the route just ended there. The rest of the route was only stuff that would make me feel depressed. I've always been interested in Key though, and Lucia caught my eye and my curiosity from the first time I saw her character design. Reading her route was unavoidable. Thinking back, man... I sure know how to pick 'em. A cursed girl bound to kill everything around her, and break everything around her, an orphan, a guinea pig for a mad scientist, who's spent most her life without taste or smell, and numbness for all 5 senses. Key, did you have to make her so pretty and likable?? Could she not catch a break? Well I guess she did. I guess I hate the route but love the character. If I ask why I played this route, at least I can say it was so I could get to get to know an amazing character and to fall in love in a spectacular date scene. That's the best thing that I can come up with. And I should probably try to separate that from the other stuff so that I can enjoy that.

Well I read that they hired someone to do all the ero scenes in LB(I really want to say this was confirmed in an interview). Knowing Ryukishi's forte is horror, I could see them transplanting horror scenes/occult events, etc. But opinions aside, what I really wanted to know is if someone could confirm that with a magazine interview with the writers...

You've hit many points home in your mini-review, and it's gratifying to see someone who gives much thought to an individual route to the exclusion of others.

I've read a lot of very romantic date scenes too. Probably the most important things are the character, how much enjoyment you get out of it, and how romantic you can make it.

Having the perfect character is really a judgement the reader makes. As far as the character is concerned, this one was just a little extra special to me because I felt like I was with the cutest and most unique and affectionate girl in the whole world. Having the perfect character is key to having the perfect date. This would really depend on the reader though on how much they liked the character. I think a lot of people will like Lucia's personality but that's subjective.

As far as the enjoyment goes, Lucia is the biggest "Hazukashii ya san" I have ever had the joy of encountering. I love hazukashii love, the VN Risa deserves a lot of praise for the date scene. Lucia's character is very generous with the amount of embarassing lines she is willing to say. At the same time when she is not saying an embarassing line, she seems cognitive and intelligent, it doesn't feel like I'm on a date with a stereotype. Every moment except when they briefly talked about Guardian and her powers was joy.

The part that is least subjective is how romantic this was. The most meaningful and best part of the date was the kiss and the confession. The setup was perfect. How many kisses & confessions have you seen looking over an entire city? Maybe a couple. At the same time that the date is occuring, Lucia is having her wish granted, one that she could only dream about because of her poison. She is having a dream granted the entire date. She has such a unique circumstance. And she acts like she wishes for it, she seems so grateful the whole date. (In fact she did wish for all of it). The VNs' execution and the music are perfect. There is so much amazing build up to it. And it's all fun and sweet. The only thing I can think of that's close is Makotos scene from Kanon which was also amazing but that was special in a dramatic way.(And that one was not enjoyable in a fun way) Considering their circumstances, that Koutaro is the only guy in the world who can withstand her poison, that Lucia was cursed to be alone forever, and that she was tortured by her past, and Koutaro helped her get over the past, that is quite an amazing setup. (It's like a miracle in itself that Lucia is able to have fun after all that) Because of these specific circumstances, Koutaro was able to make the confession extra special. Lucia and Koutaro's kokuhaku was extra special because their confession was like a promise to the future that they would be together forever, a love for eternity, until the end of the world and after.

In the placing of the storyline it was not a moment too soon or too late. None of it felt rushed. Everything was explained, every action had sentimental value in it. Lucia holding hands without gloves for the first time, the date being that her wish was granted, that she wanted dinner at a reservation only restaurant, that Lucia and the reader feels that they are in their own romantic world at the top looking over an entire city. The romance was perfect. The length of the date was perfect. I felt like it was explained in it's entirety too. Nothing was left to the imagination. The character was cute and lovable. It was like having my own fantasy granted, that why I loved the date scene.

Can you still say that you've read a lot of dates with that sort of setting, as romantic as that, (Forget whether the character is cute and lovable as that's subjective), a date that doesn't skip any parts and is explained in full detail? One that has a good length so that it isn't fleeting,

I reviewed the route again, without all the emotion I did in the past. I find if I separate my emotions from previous scenes, I can find some enjoyment in the later scenes. I think I wanted this route to be artistic in a flowery sort of way. I'm more accepting of her actions and just taking the route as it is instead of what it isn't. I wanted this really badly to be a sentimental masterpiece, it just isn't. They went for something cool. They tried to make this Kill Bill or something at the end, that confused the shit out of me.

PS. Now that I wrote about the date, I still can't believe they crapped all over it!!!

It's very much subjective, and others may look deeper into and be affected more than anyone else. As I've said, I cannot name a specific date (and here we limit it to dates, with main characters, with a touching scene at the end, in other similar media, i.e. eroge/visual novel) that would illustrate similarities. Probably the only thing that springs immediately to mind is an obscure game from Atelier-Kaguya that led to lots of obscene scenes at the outset, but involved such a saccharine character that it made me feel queasy.

Someone else who finished Lucia route and who feels for the emotional elements in it can discuss it with you better than I can, as that simply is not something I can get into. You've made your point clear, and I can see what you wanted to get across. I apologize for the refusal, but I generally don't get into the genre for the "rabu~rabu~".

On another note, my contact up there says he can't send me a copy of the soundtrack asap I'm hoping he can just rip some tracks from the cd and send 'em to me; there're only a few tracks I'd really love to acquire.

I have an explanation for that. I wanted to see more of Kud's story, when I finished LB, Kud's story was probably my favorite story including the true end(I played ecstacy version). She was my favorite character too, so I was really happy to have that sequel. Whether it was good or bad is a whole 'nother topic altogether. I can say that I definitely got my full of Kud(I didn't finish yet), although I think her character changed a lot, which made it less fun than the original. Regardless of it being bad or good, it was a game I wanted to see.

Heh, I'm thinking about playing it again. I kind of look forward to the calm and tranquility from that game after Rewrite...

KW is pure slice of life and that unspeakable stuff... it is very unique. By the same token so is Rewrite, but people were calling for a Kud Spinoff, she was the most popular character behind Rin. The idea was great, a VN completely devoted to slice of life, romance and one main interest. On a character that was very popular.

By the way I hope we don't get another loli spinoff, it sure seems they are marketing her though, and in that way... we already know the VA is willing too . Does anyone know if Lucia's VA does Ero? Ero or no ero though, it would probably be a very dark game, even as much as I've expressed that I like the character, I am apprehensive. Damnit, I'll buy it though. If they have to make a spinoff, personally my vote would be for Lucia. (Definitely my desire to see more romance with her and not more action talking here.)

I've only ever played 2 or 3 otome games, and I have some reservations picturing a Key protagonist insinuating herself into the other male leads' lives, uncovering their secrets and whatnot. And then in the end, becoming their personal rock..

I don't know. It'd look interesting, and Key has proven it can make likable male characters and apply the Key formula somewhat to them. Making them into leads though, is more than just a shift in focus for Key...

Man, I just realized that the even the writers paid homage to that date so much by making it the main focal point of the route. They obviously had appreciation for it and intended it to be the most meaningful part of the route, why did they use it as a plot device for spousal abuse No wonder the date is so good,The entire route revolves around it, I didn't consciously notice that before.

Perhaps I'm asking for a happy-go-lucky romantic date that is good enough for an entire route to revolve around?

I understand if you don't walk to talk anymore about rabu rabu , I'll be sure to read your posts in full once I'm done with the true route. It'd be my pleasure to discuss the meaning of the whole game then .

I'm not sure I'm asking for a date to revolve around a plot, what I would request is a date that is good enough for a plot to revolve around. If you could ask yourself if the date had memories pleasant enough for a character to want to return there before death. And that answer is a yes, I'm sure that would be a date worth mentioning at least. Damn, I keep finding new ways to hype this date up more and more . I made that sound way too poignant and restrictive. Toning it down just a notch, maybe a date that was pleasant enough to remember for the rest of the characters life (Perhaps in your own life if you were in their place?), no matter how many more dates you went on with that person? Lucia's date is that important to her, I think that's clear.

Perhaps just a date that is fun, has a special meaning in one's heart, and is fulfilling? I would like to say isn't fleeting either, but I don't want to shoot down your suggestion.

Haha, I'm playing the date again. I realized that Lucia talks like she speaking out of a dream. Superb VA'ing during the date... This date is so enjoyable, I feel like I hit the climax of my Visual Novel playing career for years to come. As far as a single scene of bliss is concerned.

Wait what? From where did you get that idea? I would understand not wanting to play the entire game because the first routes haven't been satisfactory, but not for those nonexistent reasons. And yes, it is a minor scene, as I've said, and for me, it held significance in that it invoked the memory of Lucia.

Moon's characters are all female and it is an Eroge? Horror is listed on the wiki. I played Eternal Fighter Zero a long time ago and saw her moves too :P. I don't seek out horror. It's not a judgement of whether it's bad or good, not at all, just a judgement based on that it's horror.

Lol, I started Moon route yesterday. Ah, you're killing me man, lol. I didn't want spoilers from Rewrite! Ah if it's minor, no big deal. :P

It's nice to hear Lucia gets some minor roles lol. Okok, I'm going to try to read some more Moon instead of hanging around here :P. Soon I'm going to have learned more from these forums than from reading the game :P. First a pitstop at the date scene though :P.

Ah I realized another small reason why the date was special. This not being an eroge, the amount of romance is really an unknown. Especially with this game and having played the last four routes, even hugs have been rare. This VN created a drought of romance, so the date was really quite special after living in this game for two weeks. The kiss was the cherry on top.

Every romantic thing that I could possibly think of happened on this date and more. If I could pick one thing from Rewrite, that I'll remember forever it will probably be this date. Not the horror, not the psychological or suspense, even those are rare in VNs and dates occur in every VN, this date is the most special thing about Rewrite. Not every date is capable of having a route , one with horror, suspense, action psychological and love revolve it.

I would recommend for anyone reading Rewrite for the first time in the future not to do as I did and steamroll through it within hours. It's a rookie mistake that I keep repeating ever since I completed Clannad's After Story without ever doing any other relevant route in the School Routes. You lose a lot of impressions and some themes and clues may be missed. I was lucky to be perceptive enough to get them as I read past.

Done with my third completion of the game; it is overall a good game. Now where's my animation?? A lot of people over at Key's review section are clamoring for it And I cannot wait enough for the third week of August to come.

I read slowly through Lucia's route again, I've come to be ok with all the parts now . It's a cool route. I was too emotionally charged the first time.

The fights with Lucia were honestly not that bad, I finally saw it as kind of cool. It's not as cool or dramatic as it could be, but I think I was wrong to have laughed at it the first time. I was too in romance land and way too serious and emotional, for me I was finally able to find the last scene a little enjoyable by bringing indifference and some feelings that Lucia was in the wrong. That was my biggest problem, I was not seeing Lucia as an enemy toward the end or I wasn't believing it. I forgot how badly her personality seemed split before. The transformation iin the game was too tame. A better buildup would have worked out to be a lot more dramatic and effective for the climactic action scenes. Such as if she had a mental breakdown after seeing the deadbodies from her poison and then have Lucia stand over some bodies and cackle when Koutaro first sees her. Then it would have really felt like they had to fight to save Lucia from herself. In the real route it seems that Lucia is herself but just wants to hear the right words from Koutaro for a little insurance. Hardly a reason to fight.

If this game ever gets animated, I hope that it is ~50 episodes. Since the heroines' routes are mutually exclusive, but still important, the anime should have something similar to the story arc "reset" in Higurashi.

The only animation studio I believe can pull off a decent job is KyoAni, considering the relation it has with previous KEY games. I'm afraid that other studios might have budget issues doing long series and will try changing so much that they butcher the story.

Moon!Kotarou and Terra!Kotarou (maybe even Pochi?) are interacting with each other along with the heroines. I just want to see the reaction Terra!Kotarou has when he meets his older self. Kagari and Kotori also need more love outside their own routes.
