Just hours ago, an intense kickstarter to fund one of the most ambitious space RPG project have ended.

The game itself is scheduled for release in 2015 so come the long wait.

Why do I talk about it? Because it's a game to keep an eye on and as I said it's very ambitious.

The action takes place in a far future where Imperial Russia made it to the space. the Mandate is facing trouble as it expanded and fringe worlds started to rebel. The Empire sends its fleet to deal with it, but the gates are sabotaged, causing the fleet to be scattered. YOU are one disgraced captain who have been given a new chance to get your act together by the recently crowned Tsaritsa Anastasia Romanova.

Just what is the Mandate?

A sandbox sci-fi RPG mixing elements of Faster than Light, XCom and other classics. You are the captain of a ship who roam the galaxy to put down rebels, kick space pirates' ass, find ghost ships or whatever you want. What do set this game apart is that the crew is just as important, you will have to win their trust and you can lose them when an unfortunate enemy shot blast through your shield and hull. Also you can board enemy ships to storm them like in Legend of the Galactic Heroes!

You start with a mere frigate and can eventually be the leader of a battle squadron of battlecruisers if you do your shit right.

But who will talk about the game better than the developer themselves?

Are you sure people haven't already had enough of Space-based RPGs after the controversial ending of Mass Effect 3 and the negative reception following other space-based RPGs like Star Ocean 4?

Call it blind faith, optimism or anything, I believe that many people have their own twists they want to put in the genre. The Mandate's team gathers many of those people. I myself wanted a game that takes elements of FTL, Silent Hunter series (for the crew management) and tactical elements of XCom (send your dudes well equipped, like don't forget the magboots if you disabled the enemy ship's artificial gravity).

The original trailer was english, with a very thick Russian accent. The russian language trailer was eventually released due to popular demand because it gives a more "authentic" feel.

Don't worry. Once you watch the Docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time, you won't see him as Walder Frey but William Hartnell, the actor who played the First Doctor Who.

An intriguing concept; it certainly merits continued observation.

Aside from the nods mentioned here, I cannot help but think of Christian Gossett's Red Star universe, as well as the now-dead Imperator (reference). One could even draw some parallels to the Terran Empire from Star Trek, or Killzone's Helghast.

Now, as if the Empress' charge were not enough to keep you busy it's strongly hinted (reference) that there are other things waiting out in the Big Black... and some of them are very, very bad. And others? Well, there's really only one way to find out, is there?
