I don't think it's meant to be an "all terrain" weapon like the other Eva units though. I think it'll probably make sense in the context of the movie itself, and none of us have seen that yet. It's possible that maybe it has a very specific singular purpose?

The plug suit is ridiculous and ugly too though, so somehow I can't imagine that Mari and her Eva were designed to be appealing in a "pretty" way, but instead designed more like a set of villains maybe?

The reason it has a jousting lance also suggests that its for head on charging, on rails or flat ground.

Its called Provisional Unit-5, probably because its a temporary refit, for a specific mission. An Angel invading through the train tunnel system or something.

EDIT: Also, Ayanami, Shikinami, Makinami, I wonder whether there's a meaning behind naming the girls this way. The 'Nami' in all 3 of their names are of the same kanji, it means 'wave'.

They were all battleships in a pacific battle.

That's not what I mean, Soryu was also a battleship.

What I mean is why do they have to change Asuka's surname to Shikinami to align with Ayanami and Makinami?

In Gainax are military-tards, they had told before that he just picked names from INJ's Ships... Katsuragi was an IJN carrier.

Now... probably they changed Asuka's name because of that coincidence in the names.

What I meant was they're all Ayanami-class destroyers, while Soryu was an aircraft carrier.

As far as i know:

-Both Ayanami and Shikinami belongs to Fubuki typeII class IJN Destroyer, that Type II was also known as "Ayanami Class", but in fact is a Fubuki-subclass, the differences are minimal.

-Makinami was an IJN Yugumi Class destroyer.

-Soryu was an IJN aircraft carrier... Langley was the very first USN Carrier.

-Katsuragi was an IJN Unryu class aircraft carrier.

-Illustrious was a WWII RN aircraft carrier and one of the actual carriers of the RN Invencible class aircraft carrier is named Illustrious also.

And for the "nami" is very common in the names of IJN's ships... i saw at least a dozen searching info about this.

I did read Makinami was predicted to be the last name of Mari, so out of a dozen -nami's, something about it must be special.

You think she's British with Illustrious?

Look:

Fubuki Class Destroyers:
Type I: Fubuki, Shirayuki, Hatsuyuki, Miyuki, Murakumo, Shinonome, Usugumo, Shirakumo, Isonami, Uranami.
Type II: Ayanami, Shikinami, Asagiri, Yugiri, Amagiri, Sagiri, Oboro, Akebono, Fujinagata, Sazanami, Ushio.
Type III: Inazuma ( yeah INAZUMA KICK!!!), Akatsuki, Ikazuchi, Hibiki.

And you can keep checking at other classes, even in the actual JMSDF (former IJN) exists the Takanami Class Destroyer: Takanami, Onami, Makinami, Sazanami, Suzunami.

dunno, i would be fun to hear Maaya-san talking with english accent (Hiki would have been massive win here )... but... the WWII HMS Illustrious did participate in the Pacific War in the battle of Okinawa, even received several attacks from Kamikazes.

Wow! Awesome! Sadamoto may be lazy, but he's good as hell.

And that suit is kind of weird in comparison to the others. Maybe it got something to do with the format of her eva.

The larger image just confirmed Mari and is the 5th pilot and of course her Eva is the fifth as well.

So any ideas how did the 6th Eva got onto the moon?

I can bet that it was "made" in the moon.

Probably. At the first movie, it looked like Kaoru was in the space, so, who knows. Maybe Nerv has the tecnology. Also, they wouldn't make the Eva 6 go to the moon just to make a bigger entrance, hehe.

Hideous Eva is hideous, and that plug suit is beyond ridiculous. It's almost painfully ugly. I'm with whoever said this doesn't look like a NERV design.

On a brighter note, I do like Mari's glasses. :/

lol, that's actually the first thing I thought when I saw Mari's Eva (after I got over the urge to go "eeew.") I don't see how this can work, unless they do pull out some convenient little explanation like that. It almost looks like it's specifically designed for... something? idk, it just seems like it'd be totally inconvenient for an Eva to roll everywhere instead of walking or running, not to mention it would look silly. There must be a reason for this.

Actually, it seems closer to one of those JSSDF interface suits in the first Steel Girlfriend game than a plugsuit. Which really makes me wonder...

And thus, thousands of new Eva doujins were born...

Yeah, she's looking pretty fine. Beats both Rei and Asuka in looks IMO. Of course, I doubt I'll end up liking her more than either of those, but yeah.

But going by that picture, she seems to be the confident type, something VERY uncharacteristic of your standard Eva pilot. But I guess that's just the outside impression, on the inside she'll probably be much worse. >_>

Before you guys continue on with the Shikinami thing...

Asuka's Shikinami is written 式波 while the WW2 destroyer is 敷波 so it's not even the same name. :P

Just thought I would point that out...

Remember that time when I said that Sakamoto-san might do a sterner Aerith for Mari? Screw that. I'm expecting Aerith, with added coolness, minus the gentle parts.
