You see, my friend is ambivalent about anime, and if there's a compelling enough reason through things like horror, or cyberpunk, or gunplay action, he'll watch a show.
But I've seen him enjoy things that aren't total blood-and-guts, too... for a while, he read the webcomic Red String which is a pretty typical shoujo romance story. With no guns or blowing things up. And both of us read Questionable Content. He liked Elfen Lied a great deal, and while higurashi lacks the action and isn't quite as gory, it does have the shock value (at least in season one) and a much better storyline overall. Edit: I still think that scene with the knife is one of the best scenes in all of higurashi-dom. The things Rika said, the act itself, Shion's reaction... all of it came together for me and I was like, "oh my god that is so f*cking metal." |
