What a very gaijin poll. In Japan, everyone reads and loves manga. There's manga for all ages, and anyone you ask will tell you a favorite manga. Not everyone watches TV anime. Anime on TV is geared mostly for shonen and kids; fans of anime (those who would stay up after midnight to watch TenTen) are considered otaku, and most normal people won't want to be called one.
Althought anime as mainstream entertainment is widely accepted in Japanese society, and anime films constantly make top 10 in Japan, most animes' simply considered a derivative of manga and a form of youth entertaiment. With a few glaring exceptions like Eva and Gundam, most anime gets made based on the reputation of the manga, not the other way around. While I do like anime a lot, in Japan, manga is king. It's over 1/2 of the whole publishing industry. Most people, including old men and housewives, read manga as a form of leisurely reading. However, when most people turn on their TV, they watch news, doramas, game shows, etc. Only young people (mostly boys) and otakus would consistantly follow anime. I mean, you guys do know that most non-kiddy anime are shown after midnight right? I personally prefer manga for one reason: like a novel, it's usually product of one or two very talented creator/artist. Creativity flows like mad in the world of manga, since if the idea turn out to be a dud, the worse that'll come to it is that the manga gets canceled and a single mangaka and his assisstants feel bad for themselves. However, if an anime tanked, millions of dollars will be lost and works of hundreds of people will be for naught. It's this freedom and respect enjoyed by these talents which made manga what it is, and without it, you won't see some of the best anime. I mean, do you really think someone's going to spend a lot of money creating a non-hentai anime about a some guy's right hand somehow turned into a young girl without the proof of concept done by the manga? I know some people prefer the action and the color of anime; I do too, for some titles. But even to ask this question is kinda funny. It's only being asked cus Americans were exposed to anime FIRST and then manga. More weight is being placed on something's simply considered a part of a manga property. |

Well, not young boys and teens. They're allowed to read Shonen titles. It's the older guys reading manga in public; then it's most likely porn. Women... ha... women can read Yaoi titles in public and no one would bat an eye. |

I love them both. but I lean towards anime more.
If it's action ill prefer Anime over Manga, for obvious reasons. Eg. Rurouni Kenshin If it's echii/ comedy ill prefer Manga over Anime, too much echii in Anime is kinda boring sometimes. Eg. Love Hina, Icjigo 100%, Lilim Kiss But I have to agree that Anime is kinda limited compared to Manga and some Anime that are made from Manga do not end up as good as the manga version. |

comments i received: "Is that porn?" "Don't worry...i won't say anything" "Are you reading japanaporno again?" "DUDE! BOOBS!" (this quote was from my friend who is also into anime/manga) I get the first and third ones no matter WHAT series i read: from Di Gi Charat to Love Hina. The second one was unique to today. Americans like myself usually see anime before we ever touch a manga (though, in my case i actually bought my first manga before i bought my first anime) due to the way our culture just...is. But, many American-Otaku (this may have a negative definition in Japan, but there's not many other words to use) get their start: 1) Reading comic books/strips as children (myself) 2) Watching an anime as a child (the Pokemon/Dragonball Z generation started like this) oh and about women reading yaoi in public: one of the girls in my school's anime club actually runs around and shows off her new Yaoi Doujin whenever she finds a new one (if i had a dollar for each Saiyuki yaoi doujin i'd never have to work a day in my life) |

I love them both....but i prefer Anime though...
For a simple reason...BGM and Music Songs.... I always workship the Seiyuu behind the characters and the Singer for the anime musics. I enjoy musics alot and i love them...thus i think i would prefer anime than manga...but i do hav alot of Manga collections... Manga is very Mobile....is easy to move a manga around... unlike anime.... Thus i love both of them depanding the occasion and anime... I like Jikembo Kindaichi manga more than the anime though....same goes with 3x3 eyes and Ah! Megami Sama. While i prefer RAVE anime than it's manga... Oh~ btw...at my place here, manga is very comman thus u won't be mistakenly confuse between reading porn or manga. While if you watch anime than it they would thought u watch porn or etc. Thus my place here is slightly the opposite of urs....hahaha~ |

I prefer Manga.
I guess some people likes to watch anime for 19 minutes of pointless conversation and 3 minutes of slow-paced action, but I beg to differ.
Since I like everything to be Fast-Paced, I prefer manga where you could actually choose to skip some incessant details. And Mangas are portable and easier to come by, so I like Mangas better. Since I read mangas on my comp, mangas are faster to download then Animes.. w/e |

Your English is...Terrible. You vocabulary consists of words consisting of 6 letters and below, and you misspelt simple words such as " common " " depending " . Your usage of words, such as using " thus " to connect every sentence is misleading . Where did you learn to speak English, The DeVry Institute? But I guess you are pretty smart for a Malaysian. |

You understood him didn't you? I don't think it was nearly bad enough to complain, and it's just bad manners, especially the last part!
Myself, I prefer manga unless the anime sticks to the manga ~100%. The biggest drawbacks to anime is editing and filler. Take them away and I see no reason why anime isn't better or at least just as good. (At least if the production values are more than decent.) |
