Gun Kata came from Equilibrium and later, Ultraviolet, the melee was mostly when TWO skilled gun Kata user met... and thus the only chance to kill each other was to shot at close range, and the only chance to save themselves is to whip away enemy's aim.

In contrast, Gun Fu involves the attacker doing a real melee, using the pistol or any other gun as blunt weapon for both attacking and parrying rather than shot at each other at point blank (though sometimes they do just that), and sometimes feet is included just like actual kung fu fighting. it born from Hong Kong action movies, mostly by John Woo.

There was a part of the movie where Preston was surrounded by 8 guards. He pistol whipped all of them without firing a single shot.

Yeah, I remember that scene as well. Though if you really can do Gun Kata to that level, pistol whipping 8 guy to submission isn't that much of a stretch either. maybe he wanted to conserve ammunition?

I mostly get the distinction from TvTropes, where discussion leads to the page being split (Gun Fu and Gun Kata used to share same page) and even in Equiliribium there's some overlap.

For what? Hunting? Killing?

Compound bow is considered good enough, but you might need to make a custom arrow (shop-purchased arrow are rarely lethal, and if they are, damn expensive). Takes some skill and strength to use.

Crossbow are fifty fifty, it's less a pain in the hand to fire and require less skill, but they also reload slowly and less accurate.

I saw a video of a guy sneaking around and used a bow with a laser sight to kill someone. Realistic?

The only unrealistic part is the laser sight, unlike bullet, arrows don't fly (relative) straight. And thus, you have to make a ballistic arcing to shot a target from longer range than, say, 5-8 meter.

There's a good reason epic war movie always depicted arrows as rain of death, they really came from above.

Once again, I can say for sure that any kind of sight aid is useless. The part that he's killing around with a bow however, still a realistic outcome.
