The Translation of Haruhi Suzumiya (Novel Translation Thread)

Whoah thats impressive. Now all thats left seems to be Chapter 4 of Volume 6(Where did the cat go?), which is stuck on 64%(according to the forum, translator missing) and volume 8.

This is by far the only translation project ive seen that has actually caught up(well it will at this rate) to how fast the novels are being published. Baka Tsuki really has the translating process refined to a really effecient one.

First I would like to thank the translaters very much, and then a couple of observations.

It sounds like there are some in the Organization who think that Kyon, not Haruhi, is the true cause of the events. Basically the same thing that we have discussed before. And that female kidnapper, what ever faction she is from, seems to have her sights set on Kyon. I would't be suprised if she transfered into their school and started giving Haruhi compitition. Just imagine Kyon's face if Haruhi brought in another mysterious transfer student an it was her.

It looks like he was setting up a lot of future events in volume 7.

We have the hostile time travler who is evidently going to meet Mikuru on a number of occations. The kidnapper who expects to see Kyon a number of times in the future. Two seperate alliances with the SOS brigade being composed of members of one of them. And the "Treasure" from 300 years ago that could only be from a very advanced ancient civilization, aliens, or time travelers. I just wonder how Tsuruya managed to get all those tests dione that quickly.

He's probably from a different future than Mikuru's altogether, in other words, he would be a slider to Mikuru since he's from a different universe than Mikuru's. He's probably back to ensure Kyon makes the "wrong" choice to ensure his future's existence, but that would spell trouble for Mikuru.

Kind of like a person living in a world where the Nazis won the war, and going back in time to make sure the Allies don't win. In which case, his actions would be a threat to our world as we know it and we would have to ensure that Hitler remains defeated to preserve our existence. Similarly, our actions would threaten his very existence.

I hope I'm not going in circles here.

That makes a lot of sense, and it would be nice to have a slider at last to complete the collection... But on the other hand, it kind of breaks the "anti-SOS brigade" symmetry we've apparently got going on, with the Galactic Existence (or whatever), the Evil Time Travelers, and the Shadow Organization. But whatever.

And speaking of the other alien group, what country should we peg their nationality at? Since Nagato's crew are Canadians, what would be the opposite of Canada?

I would like to see more about the reason/origin of Haruhi's powers, or Kyon's role...

I agree on seeing more of Haruhi's powers, the last time she did something immense chronologically was in Sighs. Volume-wise, the last story was Endless Eight. Still, I don't really mind if they remain a complete mystery for the rest of the series. :P

About Tsuruya...

My current theory is she has a Batcave where she does the testing.

After all, Tsuruya has a tendency to disappear suddenly for unnamed important emergencies... I am not saying she is a superhero, because I don't think she has any powers. But it is entirely plasusable for her to still fight crime with wealth and intelect, like how Bruce Wayne does it.
I have gave her a fictitious hero name, the "Emerald Vampyr". Cute, huh?

Some idle thoughts on volume 7, as well as Melancholy of Asahina Mikuru:

From what we've seen, the Other Side is perfectly capable of doing anything to get their way, including kidnapping the opposition, and premeditated murder of a child.

Which then brings up the obvious question: would the "good guys" (ie the factions the SOS Brigade members belong to) be willing to do such things as well?

We've already seen that the Integrated Data Entity has its own sub-factions which see nothing wrong with killing Kyon to provoke a reaction out of Haruhi. It would be another matter entirely, though, if Koizumi or Mikuru got an order to commit murder for the sake of their respective factions; there's a sort of feel, irrational though it may be, that while Yuki and the Data Entity are "aliens" and "inhuman", Koizumi's Organization and Mikuru's Time Travellers are still human.

But then humans do horrible things to each other anyway. After all, the "shadow Organization" and "rival time-travellers" are also human.

It's a bit of a scary thought. I don't think the actual members of the SOS Brigade will do anything too wrong, but their superiors might not have that conscience.

As it was already mentioned by Itsuki, many people have already both killed and died for the sake of the privileged access to Haruhi. Kyon and Haruhi are probably the only two people in the SOS-dan who don't realise there is a cold-war going on all around them. Just because no one appeared to have died yet doesn't mean there isn't already huge casualties.

One of the reasons Itsuki want to hide the truth from Haruhi, is that she might not appreciate people dying and killing for her sake. (Or worse, to do so in her name.)

Here are my thoughts of Vol 7 and Melancholy of Mikuru:

1- There are things that CANNOT be changed in the future, or predetermined events, as they are called. Why didn't Sneering Bastard destroy the memory chip? He could have easily thrown it into the river (they were at a footbridge after all) and prevented Kyon from getting it, but he instead chose to give it to Kyon, stating that it was a predetermined event, and no matter what he did, the results would be the same - the recipient would receive the chip anyway. That's why he chooses to first taunt Kyon being handing him the said chip. Of course, you might think that he did that because he needed time travel to be there in the first place, but ...

2- There are things that CAN be changed in the future. One example would be the possibility of time travel. The rival faction tried to run down the little kid just to prevent him from formulating the basic principles of time travel. Now if time travel was already a predetermined event, why did Asahina-san (Big) go so far as to instruct Mikuru to bring Kyon to the area where the boy was about to be run down? But more importantly, what was the purpose of trying to run him down? To prevent time travel? Sneering Bastard could have easily gotten rid of the chip to accomplish that. My idea is that there are events that can and cannot be changed. Kyon (or the mysterious recipient) getting the chip is something that cannot be changed, while the boy's fate, however, is something that can be changed.

3- All three rival factions have been introduced. I speculated earlier on that we would be having a sort of "Anti-SOS" and now they are fully assembled. All that's left is to see a final showdown between them ;P

4- I hope the next book will be a long story, and that it will feature Koizumi. After reading volume 7, I'm kinda interested to know more about him, and his 'Organization'.
