Besides the obvious reason? He was just trying to be funny. Tats has the single most destructive ability in the world. He could literally wipe out all life on Earth if he was suicidal.

I may be wrong as I haven't touched this novel in a while. I've only recently read the 2nd year chapters (Double Seven Arc).

However, the Chinese's knowledge of the Mahesvara is mainly from the event in the Past Arc (I basically translated that part word for word so read it if you haven't). After that disastrous invasion, the Chinese dubbed this mysterious figure as a god of destruction who basically destroys anyone within vicinity. He would literally slowly advance onto his enemies in the front lines and single handily annihilate everyone within sight and regenerate any allies on the ground. Some even went as far as to say that Mahesvara is a myth made up.

By the time of the Yokohoma Invasion, the Chinese were genuinely shocked that a person tilting the battlefield like Mahesvara years ago appeared. The commander himself didn't even believe in his existence.

Based on this reaction, it's possible that Tatsuya hasn't appeared as the Mahesvara since the Past Arc Events. That or for every battle Tatsuya has appeared in against the Chinese, there have been no survivors to tell of the tale.

Another reaction useful in this discussion is the one where Tatsuya sniped everyone at the end of Volume 4 (a boss scene). Huang only realized moments before his death the ability is Demon Right, which only belong to the one and only Mahesvara. It seems like this is an ability that just circulates around based on past events (more myth than reality) and it wasn't until Huang witnessed the ability first hand that he realized it's true existance.

In essence, Mahesvara is almost this urban legend that no one is sure if it really exists. It's only when you see it first hand that you get the "oh sh*t, why was I sent here?"

Out of Story, the writer almost certainly went for the Shiva reverences intentionally.
In Story, someone might have used Shiva references intentionally as theme naming for his abilities.

Person A: the enemies are calling him Mashevara
Person B: sounds good, let's put that as his codename/theme

Well if you you think about it then the situation with Mayumi could evolve into what happened to Sati... but then that would mean that Mayumi would be burned alive and Tatsuya would rampage and slaughter masses (ofcourse this could also be seen as Miyuki's role if seen from another angle. Sati afterall was encouraging Shiva to have a connection with the world.)... meh that's impossible nothing could ever happen to the #1 and #2.

Once you know what to look for the Shiva parallels are pretty numerous. Besides the ones already mentioned Shiva is depicted as having a third eye. Which is rather literal with the material burst CAD and you could also make a case about Tat's elemental sight being a third eye as well.
