Oldest Online Fansub Group?

hrmm..hrmm.. after some accounts later...
As far what i have followed and remembered.. that:
I can track back AnimeOne back to Naruto (2002 summer was it?)
Soldats with Star Ocean EX and Final Fantasy Unlimited (2001)
anime-works, Hanaukyo Maid Tai (2001) <- may have been dvd-rips
psychlo-anime? with GTO back in the year 2000. I think they stopped after
some random episodes from different series back in 2002, im still unsure about that.

Althou that AnimeOne is the likely most active group that is still left
doing digi-subing (often with other fs-groups)

Soldats is still there but not as active as before..last thing they fs'd was
Monster i think.

So Soldats and AnimeOne are one of the.. well..still existing fs-groups left since 2001 (doing digi's)

me, me and myself started first with dc (direct connect)
but switched to irc or Mirc..as soon as i found out were
the source came from

Soldats's name sort of gives their original purpose away - they were Noir subbers.

Don't forget about AnimeCo which released Momoiro Sisters early March 2001, still releasing Nadja, Ishin released Saiyuki back in July 2001 and is still active as of July this year, all confirmable from envirosphere.

back in 2002 i heard that AnimeCo was stealing scripts from AnimeOne
members at their irc server..but who knows may have been just "rumors"
But then we also have those Spectre Anime which also released saiyuki back
in 2001 along the same time as Ishin did i assume.

Making me belive that AnimeCo's job was rather an easy one
compared to others...stealing..is..very...good ^_^

Spectre Anime are still alive. Last release was last month or so.

Some guy in e-f was starting those rumors to try to turn groups on AnimeCo, I can show you many different instances of communications between AnimeCo and other groups like a-f in order to dispel the rumors he created. Most of the time people were very reasonable and able to recognize it was third parties who were causing the problems, not people in the two groups. I'd post my full experiences if anyone was really interested, but it's really just one person's view / experience and not the 'big picture' type of thing.

Just as well, I don't think AC and AOne really have any common projects do they? They are fansubbers from quite different "eras" and usually do completely different things. Common sense beats listening to rumours and posting more about them .

Actually it's nice to hear other people talk of things from that era, even things like those false rumors, since it helps me / others who lived through that era back up or substantiate own personal experiences and keep things in perspective.

Perception of fansubbing is mostly dependent on how early you joined the scene.

They don't appear to be active - their site was last updated in July 2004, more than two years ago.

I'd like to hear those kinds of stories, but I also completely understand if you don't want to/feel uncomfortable posting them.

I remember looking into them back inbetween when Kodocha stopped distributing and before I found BitTorrent. They seemed a little crazy and I never ended up getting anything from them.

Oh yeah ... they're not active anymore, but Arctic Animation started doing VHS-based fansubs back in 1985. They do have a digisub release (which is probably just a rip from VHS) listed on AnimeSuki - Miracle Girls. In a box somewhere, I still have my VHS fansubs of Kimagure Orange Road that I aquired back in very early 90s. Man, things have changed ...

Funny thing is, I don't think this will count and all, but when I checked the groups on animesuki, by putting different numbers, I found the first Animesuki "Official" first group....

Layer, perhaps?) Allegedly we had stole the scripts from another
second-generation group. I don't even remember the group name. The rumors
cited similar sounding lines and the like. Fortunately, important members from
both groups (...) got together and discussed the matter
at length. Apparently the rumors were causing 'problems' for some people in
the other group. By working together and combining the knowledge they knew,
both members were able to establish that the rumors themselves were baseless,
and that the origination of the rumors was again..."

In another case, there was a certain translator that both our groups shared without even knowing about it. The translator used different nicks and everything. She would give her scripts to both groups and then just let them run with it. There was probably a third group in the mix two, but neither of our groups had any contact with them. We recognized this when members from both groups compared our original translations and recognized that they matched exactly, line for line. At first both parties thought one had stolen the scripts from the other, but then we started comparing e-mail addresses and irc data and hostmasks. Once we realised what was going on, our members and their members came to a mutual agreement to just accept that status quo and move on.

Why did she do this? If I recall correctly, she used to work in another group and they didn't think much of her translations, ultimately discarded the project before it ever made it to release. The group leader thought the show was 'too girly' and would hurt the reputation of his group name and members. The distro guy and his buddies wanted nothing to do with the show and therefore wouldn't help distribute it. She felt that by giving her latest translations to multiple groups, she could be reasonably assured that at least one group would actually make it to a release and have the will to get it out to the fans. These kinds of schemes may seem strange by todays standards, but back then BT did not exist and unless a group was willing to release it and distros were behind it, it didn't get out.

AnimeOne worked with Infinite Ryvius, which was published in 1999...just because everyone puts AonE+Naruto in one thought doesn't mean it's where they started : )

Please continue with the old stories, they tend to pass time quite well.
