Well this is quite interesting...
How could Nanjo remember Kinzo at that time? That could have only happened if Nanjo either lived in the same "hometown" Kinzo was or in Odawara.

In both cases we must think that Nanjo somehow followed Kinzo to Rokkenjima by becoming the director of the nearby clinic in Niijima.
To think that they just happened to reunite in the izu archipelago would be too much of a coincidence.

Nanjo was said to meet Kinzo because of chess.

Perhaps he played with him before Kinzo became the head, and after the succession of head and business success, Kinzo invited him to be his family doctor and paid him to set up a clinic near Rokkenjima.

I don't think anyone said that was how they met. It was said that he's his chess partner, and it was other people that said that right? I don't think that's all there is to Nanjo. Can you really build up a strong relationship just by playing chess?

Oh yes you can. Numerous real life examples exist.

That said, no, I bet that isn't all there is to Nanjo. The most obvious reason is that generally, relationships built up from playing chess tend to start on neutral territory, like a club, a cafe, or a similar establishment where chess players gather.

Can you imagine Kinzo frequenting one?

It was said that he was enjoying his childhood and early adulthood before he was selected to be the next head. So he may have frequented these places much.

Indeed - but that would very likely be in Taiwan, which we have no indication Nanjo has ever been to, and would make it much more of a "not all there is to Nanjo".

It could be that after the Great Kanto earthquake (1 September,1923), Kinzo was called back from Taiwan to attend urgent family meeting. Probably some struggles were done on choosing the next head of family among the elders. Kinzo was probably annoyed and bored when he was residing in Japan those time. So he went to clubs and other entertainment like how he did in Taiwan. Then he met Nanjo.

He was, unexpectedly, chosen as the next head of family, as a puppet. It was said he actually wanted to die during the war. I think it is safe to say between he was selected as head and end of WWII he abused alcohol and resorted to entertainment for distraction a lot.

Maybe Nanjo got his medical degree in Taiwan. Not that I'd knock the quality of the Taiwanese medical education establishment by suggesting someone like Nanjo trained there, but...

I have this in my notes for episode 5. Could become more important later.

Kyrie makes damn well sure everyone knows that they'll be stuck on the island until October 5th. She says this twice, once referring to Krauss, and once referring to Erika.

Kyrie is always the one who makes this emphasis. When talking to Battler, when talking to adults, she always rises suspicion in everyone. I'm also starting to feel like that's intentional.

Can someone please explain whats going on with the meta world in this episode? I got a bit confused with the Meta-World setting

First there is the board world (All)
Then there is the Meta world(Beato, gaap, Ronove, Seven sister, Erika, Dlanor)
And last but not least there is a Meta-Meta world with Battler, Bern and Lamda as well as puppet Beatrice

So how does it work that Meta-Meta-Beatrce can't talk while Meta-Beatrice can?
I see why Battler is not in the Meta world, since he is not the detective, so he got invited to the Meta-Meta world.

So basically there are two game boards now:
One controlled by Meta-Beato
And one controlled by Meta-Meta-Lamda, which controls the Meta-Beato Gameboard.

Is this assumption correct or did I miss something?

Piece Beato, and company are all delusions or lies that only exist in Natsuhi's mind. Or if you prefer her "mental gameboard". That's how you explain why Kinzo is in all those scenes as well.

pretty much.
though I see the game board consisting of 2 separate realms, "normal" and "meta" (grey scenes), where time stops for one when the other is playing
and then there's the other "higher meta world" (purple scenes)

and I would say the "meta-Beatrice" you are referring to is Piece-Beato, who will always be on the game board regardless of what happens to meta-Beato, just like Piece-Battler
