Yaoi vs Yuri Discussion!

Hi all!

Just wondering which you guys prefer and why?
Is it true that guys like yuri and girls like yaoi more?
Seems like yaoi is more talked about, but do you all think equates to it being more popular?

This probably isn't the best forum for this... you're probably better off posting this here

Not really. There are plenty of yaoi fangirls and yuri fanboys and I'd assume very few of them (if any) are gay.

Most yaoi/yuri fans are straight. I don't know where you'd get the idea that most are gay. Just look at the internet fandoms.

I believe Yaoi is more mainstream than Yuri.

As girl okatu are mostly Fujoshi and Male otaku are mostly into lolis.

Thats how I view things anyways. (And basing it on magazines. there are more Yaoi manga serializations than Yuri ones.)

This is coming from someone when bored goes into #lilicious and download yuri manga there LOL. I think I've read at least 80% of the manga they scanlate lol...

I've only watched 3 shounen-ai/Yaoi series. Saiyuki, Yami No Matsue, Loveless... (If you consider xxxholic and Tsubasa as shounen-ai, then add that too.)

Now for your questions:

Just wondering which you guys prefer and why?
Yuri I suppose... I actually prefer yuri than most romance themed manga/anime as Yuri has more of an "equal" relationship between couples. I don't know if shounen-ai romance manga are like this(pure romance with no action) though.

Well I think Ultenth summarized it nicely on the Girl Friends thread.

Overall it seems to be more romantic and I guess "pure" in my eyes because they usually fall in love for personalities and not looks as well, and tend to just take better care of each other. Sometimes I wish I was a hot lesbian chick too, LOL!

Yes... I know a lot of yaoi fangirls and they are scary.

edit:

Yes this should be transfered to the General Anime section @__@

probably from the fact that yaoi is boy/boy and yuri is girl/girl. i dont see why a straight person would be in to such in a thing unless they were just curious, which is understandable. most fans are probably girls tho.

In Japan, it is mostly considered that both appeal to females. Polls have shown that men don't like uri because they like a male lead who they can relate to. Yaoi appeals to most females as well as gay men, whereas yuri only really appeals to gay females. Because the audience is so small, there is very very little yuri while there is a shittonfuckassload of yaoi.

Straight people like it because girls like men, and thus 2 men is good. Men like women, and thus 2 women is good. 1 +1 = 2 = Yes. I mean... really. It's one of the most glaringly obvious things on the internet, too.

I'm actually a lesbian who likes yuri, though. :P Which is normal. There are just way fewer gays and lesbians in the world than there are straight people. I doubt that yaoi would have escalated to stratospherically high popularity if its only patrons were gay men.

A (straight) friend of mine who's a psychologist has a number of lesbian patients. She's asked me about anime and manga because many of her younger patients mentioned them in therapy sessions. I told her I didn't find that surprising given the much more tolerant view of homosexuality in Japanese popular culture compared to American media.

At first i thought you were joking on this. But on second thought it's true actually.

As a male, i think male audience not always can find a male that they can relate to (especially those who have already been familiar with many anime series). Still they watch romance anime because they would like to see how girls react in certain daily situation even if the guy is absolutely pathetic. So if that's the case then who care if it's yuri or not. Two girls then you can see double interaction.

Ultenth point is true as well

that is what my Ex said when I told him about me liking yaoi, as a guy he admitted he likes seeing two girls getting off on another so he assumed women would prefer men, did you really think that straight girls always like seeing the same sex getting off on another I for one don't..
I mean I like yuri anime but not anything extreme, I liked Kannazuki no Miko and am watching that new show Mōryō no Hako but I wouldn't go for anything heavier because I don't like seeing two girls getting off on another like that because I prefer men =P

why are we having this discussion in the suggestion thread..

It doesn't help that yuri fans are fucking stupid. They will eat up anything yuri like fucking Strawberry Panic and Kannazuki no Miko and have the fucking nerve to compare it to Marimite and Simoun. Thanks to that, only about half of the tiny amount of yuri out there is actually any good.

Thats why I stick to manga yuri. Kannazuki no Miko is actually one of the better yuri out there(Manga was heavy on Yuri and actually focused on the Yuri. And when I watched the anime I skipped those lol mecha action and just watched the Yuri parts.) Take out those mecha part and just focus on Chikane and Himeko and it is one of the better yuri anime out there.

I barely call Simoun as yuri as if they want to hook up one of the girls would just go to the spring and wish to be male =/.

Heavy Drama-yuri is an untested market. Only Marimite has tried that market. Most of the yuri anime are focus on fanservice.

Given the small selection, you tend to be less picky about stuff.

Mind, I'm not a hardcore yuri fan; I don't mind a romance if it's girl x girl, boy x boy, girl x boy, or girl-in-boy's-body x boy-in-girl's-body or some weird combination as long as it's good.

Sadly, while 90% of almost everything sucks, 99.99% of porn sucks. I don't have the energy to wade through all the yaoi shit to get myself some good gay romances, be it dramatic or fluffy/comedic. The smaller sample of yuri makes it easier overall to quickly decide which is good and which is not so good.

I can understand where your sentiment comes from, though.

what an interesting topic…

I believe that yaoi is usually aimed towards a female audience, while yuri is aimed more towards a male audience. It would be strange for a straight guy—or girl—to watch something that strongly hints homosexuality among his/her sex—it can make them feel a bit uncomfortable, if you know what I mean… My last and so far only exposure to yaoi/shounen-ai is Antique Bakery, which I tried watching last Summer. I certainly enjoyed it for the most part, but I did not feel very "happy" with some of its suggestive scenes…

Somehow, I see more stuff being produced for these yaoi fans, while the yuri-fans, in my opinion, are not receiving the same kind of treatment. This is not necessarily true in the anime medium, but when I take a look at the manga available, I certainly see more titles with a yaoi/shounen-ai label stick to it, rather than anything with my beloved yuri/shoujo-ai tag.

I have been reading a couple of manga with strong yuri undertones for the past few months, since it’s disappointing that there’s almost nothing of this nature in the anime medium—only exception is Candy Boy, which is like, a short episode every month!!!. Girlfriends is one—somebody already mentioned this one, I think—while the other one is Strawberry Shake; the two of them have been my guilty pleasure this year—especially the latter—not solely because of the fact they are yuri, but because they are really entertaining, comedy-wise and character-wise. I read somewhere—not really sure, though—that these two mangas are actually attracting a large female readership—which is surprising given the nature of the yuri genre. Probably has something to do with the mangakas, who are females—really surprising again, at least for me—who seem to know where to draw the line and where to insert some yuri—as opposed to let’s say, Shoujo Sect (which is a hentai with lesbians).

I consider myself a yuri-fan, but geez, such a “general statement” is somewhat misleading, don’t you think?

If we are talking about the overall quality of a show, Marimite and Simoun are way above Strawberry Panic. But in terms of yuri, it strictly depends on what you are looking for: yuri as “pure love,” or yuri as “a lesbian relationship.” Yuri is defined, I believe, along the lines of “pure love,” which again, Marimite and Simoun serve as good examples, in my opinion. However, if we go by the “most common misconception,” Strawberry Panic is the show with more “yuri,” so to speak. It’s actually way more complex, but hopefully this simplification works.

As of late, I just discovered a show that is defining the yuri genre, so to speak--that is, Candy Boy. There you have a “pure love” between two girls, or two sisters, and the relationship is illustrated in a everyday setting without any form of romance involved, only this underlying notion of “togetherness.” It’s really hard to explain how this show is defining the yuri genre, but so far, this is the one that is the closest to my ideal of “pure love” (try to imagine love with no romance, or something like that ). And one of the reasons why, I think, is that the yuri element is not excessively combined with anything else, nor is used as some form of blatant “fan-service,” but developed along the story and its characters.

To begin with, and as I said before, there are very few shows that are yuri strictly speaking, as opposed to yaoi, where you get a lot either way. Yuri seems to be more of a niche market, and as such, there's not that much to choose from. It's rare to find something that can be considered yuri in the complete sense of the word--the few I've suspected were not yuri at all, and the ones that had some yuri were either good or bad due to some other reason.

edit: oh yes, this shouldn't really go in the suggestions section...

Tiny amount of anything is actually any good. And personally I woudln't call anyone stupid for liking something that I don't. It's quite easy to become exasperated with all the beating around the bush in yuri manga and anime which probably has a lot to do with the popularity of Kannazuki no Miko and Strawberry Panic. Plus, the former is not a bad series at all, if we manage to forget the god-awful mechas.

Quote:

Very true, for instance I am currently considering finally finishing Strawberry Panic. Not because I find it anything but painfully mediocre but because it's so hard to find any decent yuri anime. No, scratch decent - any yuri anime at all. I guess it's just not popular enough to merit more than a few series per year...if we get lucky.
