DVD versions - waste of time?
I'm interested in what everyones thoughts are on DVD versions or related "rehashes" of series that have already been subbed? Considering also that fansubs aren't supposed to be a replacement of the original of course.
What made me post this was today on Animesuki I see Popgo and Ani-Kraze releasing a trilingual version of Scrapped Princess (OGM then I assume bleh). What is the point of this at all? The raws were from satellite, so the quality of the originally subbed episodes was excellent, and I'm sure the series was already available subtitled in Chinese as well. Other one I noticed was Anime Fin releasing Da Capo Ep1 DVD. Another case where the entire series has been subbed already, the raws were good, the groups did an excellent job, etc. And also they are 230mb episodes when the fansubs were 115mb without the unrelated music video at the end...what a bloaty waste sigh. |

We tend to limit DVD re-releases to cases where either there is new content on the DVD or if the originals were severely lacking in quality to the point of being unwatchable. Although we just kind of did Tutu 1-13 again because we wanted to o.O
That Scrapped Princess OGM is definitely a little more than necessary.

the reasons for the trilingual and the Anime Fin versions are simple, we forget that yes here in America, dvd's are easy to come by and when licensed are always dubbed or at least subtitled in English. However some other countries don't have it as well as we do and have now the option of seeing these great shows. How many dvd's have you seen subtitled in Spanish or other languages yet alone fansubs. I personally like to see raws as opposed to dvd rips. I think raws usually look cleaner, not always the case but usually. I think it is ok to do dvd rips in other languages or even in english if it is a dvd that has not been released in America yet. Reason being is that once it is released in America, the companies here are powerful and they will come down on these r1 dvd ripping groups eventually. Where as dvd rips of other regions does not affect r1 so much and allows them to stay under the radar per say.
BTW, Anime Fin does their fansubs in Spanish(Espanol) so for them to do shows that are already done, is perfectly fine with me. |

The full series, perhaps. But episodes 1-31 have been available from Anime-Kissaten for some time using an R2 DVD source. We've been using the DVDs from the beginning, since they were already available when we started. However in this case the R2 DVDs themselves did not have the greatest transfer. Especially on scene changes, where it looks like two strips of film were literally taped together. When watching the DVDs on a TV, overscan hides most of the problem, so the Japanese company that made the DVDs said they had no intention of fixing it. We go through a lot of work to clean this up for our releases.
Another, now defunct, group once released the entire series, but it is my understanding that these were little more than direct rips from the HK DVDs. |

If you really want "DVD quality," get the REAL DVD and not some MPEG4 re-encode. (Half of the difference between the Tsukihime raws I have and the DVD is from the MPEG4 encoding). And saying that you don't have the money doesn't count. If you live in the US and don't have the money to buy, let's say Excel Saga vol 1 R1 DVD, does that entitle you to download an R1 DVD rip? And if you don't have money, well I'm pretty sure a 200mb satellite raw-sourced fansub should be sufficient. |
