I was reading Techdirt and found a post that in the end encouraging people that, when you find a good video, it would be cool if the audience would create a back-up. That way, when people who believes in the make-believe entity call intellectual property go ahead and erase the video, we have a backup we can share about.

Which I have been doing for quite a while. I still have backups of P.M.M.M. and I.S. in my flash drive in Nokia MP4 format.

I got burned CDs/DVDs of Midori no Hibi, Gundam Seed Destiny, Erementar Gelade, Mahoromatic, Baka Test, E7, HanaIro and Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth.

Gosick is next.

I encourage people to make their own back ups. You never know when you'll need it.

I think they are talking more about fan creations such as AMVs, mashups, abridged episodes and anything else that uses IPed snippets, than 1:1 copies of commercial available videos.

But why stop there? Not only AMV and such, I think we should actually back up ALL videos(we individually like) in the net. Once they're censored, they're gone forever.

Well, I'm working hard on backing up anime, if that is what you're concerned about.

But for those, the youtube versions are not really worthwhile and I don't have the means to get them back out into the net otherwise.
If anyone wants to drop by my house with a couple of TB empty external hdds, that would be about the only way I could be more than data-dead-end for high volume files.
And besides many, many people have identical copies of those already.
But it's different for fancreations on youtube. They may actually vanish after being taken down.

Well, if you really want to! My dad in his techie-consumer craze went out and bought one of those a long time ago for some unknown reason. He couldn't possibly need that much space!

It will probably break before he ever gets a chance to use all of it.

Better to invest that cash in a RAID array!

Not a good idea either.

All in all, external HD is better. You just need to be careful.

You should still use a RAID setup for big storage, to protect you from hardware failure of single drives.
A RAID is a good backup solution. Just make sure the original data is not in the same RAID.

A RAID isn't a backup system, no (after all your house could burn down with the RAID destroyed, but it certainly guards against that horrible event: Hard disk failure.

I'v never had it happen to me, but eventually it will. When I have the money, I'm storing everything vital on a RAID.

That just means you need to place the backup storage (which should be a RAID) in a remote place. For example park it at your parents house or something like that. But that has nothing to do with RAID itself.

So a RAID is a layer of HDs made to work like a single HD. Is there a recommended number of HDs for one RAID?

You always have to sacrifice some total disk space to set up the RAID.
The more HDs you use, the less disk space you generally lose.

If you start out with 2 HDs, that get simply mirrored, you lose half the disk space.
With 4 HDs in a RAID5 you only lose 1/4 of the total space.
In both cases that is 1 HD you have to buy extra, but the ratio of HD-space for money improves. At the same time, the cost of devices to put those HDs in goes up, so you need to look for a sweet spot.
When I got my 4bay NAS last year, 2TB hdds were in the optimal price range. You put those in and get 6TB of storage RAID for the price of 4x2TB hdds and an NAS. So you do pay extra, anyway, but you can try to find the best ratio using a calculator and some market research.
This was before the flooding of that major HD factory btw, so HD prices were very low. Have the prices come down again since then?

Hard disk prices are so cheap now anyway, that the value of the data stored is far and above the value of any HD itself. In previous years the value of a RAID was questionable, but now it's really a no brainer, once you have the resources for it.

I'm guilty as an "addicted anime downloader". I'm planning to buy a dvd burner to "solidify my downloads"... You can't always rely on external drives... better "burn" them....

I don't focus on maintaining the sop called HD or aything related to that... What am I a OCD?
Knowing what's about the anime is what's valuable for me..
