To draw yet another Evangelion parallel: "What's wrong with running away from reality if it sucks?" Boredom is a horrible thing. Humanity's advance has slowed and now it can't keep up with our attention spans; again, because of money. However, instead of logging onto internet forums and bemoaning the deplorable condition of society (), Haruhi got up off her butt and did something about it. She set out to change the whole world. While she didn't quite pull that off (yet), she did manage to change the lives of everyone around her, which in its own way did change the world. If there's only one thing that's to be learned from Haruhi, it's that doing what you want is the only way to escape all the hum-drum that is modern society. It teaches us that going outside and playing is fine for people of any age. Making rediculous movies with your friends is something that people will actually want to watch. Going on city-wide searches to find something that's right in front of you can be fun. And, most importantly, it lets us believe that if we wish hard enough and take the initiative, maybe something truly interesting will come our way. |

Correction: Making rediculous movies with your friends starring a busty fragile and sensitive senior in tight bunny costume and waitress suit and having her fall into water is something that people will actually want to watch
I agree with your point; and to add to your last sentence, it does also show that wishing to hard may make us blind to the pleasures and interesting things we already have; as in how Haruhi had no clue that she was gallivanting with an alien, esper and slider. |

I never felt it was as great as other people think it is, more of a feeling of, thank god this show is NEW and DOESN'T SUCK and is actually entertaining and fun to watch. I still don't have enough faith to believe other new shows will be as watchable as this one, but I'd like to believe its true.
Also since its new and I enjoyed it, it gave me some common ground to talk about with fellow anime fans since most of the stuff I watch is from the 80's and 90's, which a lot of people haven't seen nor likely heard of so its impossible to discuss with other people. For that I am very grateful. I'll tell a bit of a story here about why I am grateful for the talking points and common ground this show has provided: Keep in mind I'm stuck in something of a sandwich generation where I have little in common with Gen-X (which I often feel I belong to more than Gen-Y) and even less in common with the so-called Generation Y. I've always been stuck in the middle with regard to age in my family and am the black sheep of said family who are conservative on one side and liberal on the other while I'm a socialist, isn't it great growing up isolated and bitter. After some careful research I've figure out I belong to Generation XY a very narrow transitional generation between Gen-X and Gen-Y, I can also apparently act as a medium between the two generations. I like Snake Legend and Panzerfan posts (previous page) very much. Very good summary, boredom is indeed at one of the centerS (?) of Haruhi's story.
sorry Personnally, I'm quite strong against boredom. I mean I always have things to think about, stuff to read, watch, or listen to, walks I'd like to do, etc... I don't need much to be kept "entertained". I'm way from feeling alright all the time (that's the less I could say ), but still, this is not somethig I have to fight myself. Yet, I understand how bored people feel. I understand why bored people are bored. This is nothing new, I guess. I'd say that since the end of WWII and after 1968 revolution, young people have "nothing" (notice the quotes) to fight against. Boredom is human. When you're not starving, or cold, when you're not "endangered", you just get bored. Problem is, things changed in the 80's, I'd say. Major crisis led youth to a new poverty, without a job ( at least in my own country) without a future, just waiting for social welfare. What summarizes the 90's best is still Nirvana's "Here we are now, entertain us". Yeah, they were addressing the whole bunch of people who created that shitty rotten modern world and left it hanging without any user's manual. 2001 and Bush indeed brought some sort of "entertainment", but look... yeah, it's pathetic. Killing people and having people killed in the so-called name of freedom and peace is not fun at all, isn't it? So, yeah, 15 years later, some of us grew old , some weren't even born at that time, but we're still here now, and we need entertainement. Peace around the world, and entertainement. end That's why Suzumiya Haruhi's plot is completely new. It goes beyond boredom. Tanigawa just created the goddess everyone born after 1977 (Chose the year "almost" randomly. lol) is dreaming about. Sorry about the obscure rant.

You might notice some recent pasts missing from this thread, that's because they have now been moved into the Suzumiya Haruhi Q & A thread.
Here's a reminder of what this thread is for Quote:
A note to posters such as Kaiko and chill., please use threads such as the Suzumiya Haruhi (General Discussion) if you wish to actually discuss more general points or issues. Ta! |

For once something got moved and it wasn't my fault.
Looking at Raphael's post it seems no wonder that I'm a nihilist, having been born into neither generation X or Y I'm stuck in the middle without any idea where I'm going. I can honestly say in my opinion the series has done nothing to change that fact nor does it address the issues of my generation, its more a personal battle for the characters than for society as a whole, I don't identify with any of the characters, even Haruhi who I am most like is her own person. Maybe what they are trying to say is that everybody is unique and should not be judged by the rest of society which is what everybody did to Haruhi during her youth by shunning her and calling her weird. I'm pretty certain at this point that the major theme of the series was another accepting those who are different thing, only this time the difference is that instead of the outcast being all moppy and whiny all the time she ventures out to prove herself to the rest of the world and is only emo about 10% of the time (This is where encouragement from the rest of the gang to help her along comes in handy). So its a coming of age story except with interesting characters, it kind of bounced off me, but was still an interesting story, its just nothing affects me, even Smells Like Teen Spirit which for the first time ever today I found out what the hell Kobain was saying, was cool and all, but it changes nothing. To me the thing that makes the most sense to me is that quote from The Simpsons. Bart Simpson: Nothing you say can upset us. We're the MTV generation. Lisa Simpson: We feel neither highs or lows. Homer Simpson: Really? What's it like? Lisa Simpson: Meh. |

That's basically it. My age is the same as Kaioshin (biggest anime when I was in primary's Sailor Moon, Gundam and Dragonball. I was too young to actually remember defining events like Tian'anmen and Berlin wall but I caught onto the advent of the internet). Suzumiya Haruhi takes on the role of summarizing what I have observed when I was in school with this transition period.
Haruhi is the embodiment of the issue with generation y/internet generation's boredom while Kyon to me becomes the representation of the frustation of the young adults sandwiched just inbetween. Alot of his comments resonate with what the transition youth know (such as the issue of social safety net threatened by retirement of baby boomers as a very minor point he made or his "the look of somebody that failed entrance exam" remark) and this block is adversely effected given that they're now just entering work force. When he talks with Koizumi the metaphysic is at the forefront of what the young adults would be engaged with during advanced education or would have some basis to digest the fine points after secondary education... the later being the reason that the talk pulls me in like no other. Kyon and Haruhi actually makes me think of the gap between the transition period and the internet generation at times and personally I find it relavent as I live it since my little sister would be gen Y. Kyon strikes a poignant note in me moreso than any other as the result of what I come out of and his blatent narriatives.

I want to see a 2nd season as well. After all. The writers have to back up Kyon and Nagato's conversations on other humanoid interfaces that might attack Kyon.
(Hopefully if they have a 2nd season, they'll have it in chrono order. The last episode and episode 9 should've been combined in a way -_-* |

Probably the worst thing about this anime is its shortness. I want more! And it seems like everyone else does too.
Also, is anyone weirdly obsessed with the ending credits? I don't even like it that much but I have probably watched it about 30 times. One more thing- MHS (SHY) is awesome because it showed a flashback to something that hadn't happened yet. |

I'm very oddly obsessed with the ending credits. I've even tried to do the dance (with the help of sos-dan.com). I mean, who hasn't tried to do the dance? xD
I loved this series. It's the best I've seen in a while. The characters are all so lovable. Every last one! And the story is so.. unique, I dunno! I haven't seen anything quite like it. I loved Kyon's narration. His sarcasm is always entertaining. |

I was completely entranced by the series. It has been a while since I felt I enjoyed anime on such a level. A truly wonderful story all the way through. And even though the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi has provided us with a lovely ending to make a very satisfying close, we can't help but wish for more.

i actually liked how they didnt come out in chronological order, it kinda went well with this "abnormal" (aliens, time travelers, and espers oh my!) anime. Also by how the story went, the ending wouldn't have been as cool imo, as the chronological ending was not as climactic as the one put out =P.
all in all, i really enjoyed this and i do hope they come out with a second season just as good ^^ |

I also dig how it came out-of-order. Imo had it come out in order, many of the episodes, basically all after TMoSH VI, would have been considered filler episodes.
The baseball episode is a good example. Had it been shown in chronological order, it would be funny. With this order, it has a "it's funny, but wth happened?!?" vibe to it.
