Aaaaahhhhh... That was relaxing.

It always surprises me when Hinata shows off that she's almost as ignorant as Aoi about some aspect of mountian climbing. I figured the need for trail rations was common knowledge.

Moar Kaede in her underwear, pls.

Spoiler for A wild 9 and 10 appear!:

I did like the fact that they don't underplay what going up Mt. Fuji is probably like, and do actually take notice of the thinner air and how this can affect people.

Climbing Fuji is no cakewalk, and Aoi found that out the hard way. They couldn't reach their goal this time, but there's always the next.

Episode 9:

You know, it bothers me that they keep letting Aoi bring up the rear. She may be the slowest, but she's also the weakest climber, and if something happens to her there's no one back there to help her. The mountain climbing trips I did when I was the girls' age or younger always had at least one experienced person in the back to ensure that no one got left behind.

Also don't like the way she's yawning. Yeah she's sleepy, but yawning in a low-atmosphere environment doesn't bode well for other reasons.

Episode 10:

That hurts. After she was the one that asked to do this, after all the effort and expectations and hopes Aoi's put into this climb, to be unable to complete it... it hurts.

I think it's going to take Aoi a bit of time to overcome this failure and accept that she can come back and face the mountain again.

Eps 9 and 10

How disappointing for poor Aoi!

I do remember some time back it was mentioned that training and physical fitness is very important for a mountain climber, but interesting altitude sickness does not seem 1=1 dependent on that, according to the wiki page, which had some interesting info I thought I would copy over here as a little "side commentary" on the eps.

Quote:
Altitude sickness—also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), altitude illness, hypobaropathy, "the altitude bends", or soroche—is a pathological effect of high altitude on humans, caused by acute exposure to low partial pressure of oxygen at high altitude. It commonly occurs above 2,400 metres (8,000 feet). It presents as a collection of nonspecific symptoms, acquired at high altitude or in low air pressure, resembling a case of "flu, carbon monoxide poisoning, or a hangover". It is hard to determine who will be affected by altitude sickness, as there are no specific factors that correlate with a susceptibility to altitude sickness. However, most people can ascend to 2,400 metres (8,000 ft) without difficulty.

Causes

The available amount of oxygen to sustain mental and physical alertness decreases with altitude. Available oxygen drops as the air density itself, the number of molecules (of both oxygen and nitrogen) per given volume, drops as altitude increases.

However, the percentage of oxygen in air, at 21%, remains almost unchanged up to 21,000 metres (69,000 ft). The RMS velocities of diatomic nitrogen and oxygen are very similar and thus no change occurs in the ratio of oxygen to nitrogen.

Dehydration due to the higher rate of water vapor lost from the lungs at higher altitudes may contribute to the symptoms of altitude sickness.

The rate of ascent, altitude attained, amount of physical activity at high altitude, as well as individual susceptibility, are contributing factors to the onset and severity of high-altitude illness.

Altitude sickness usually occurs following a rapid ascent and can usually be prevented by ascending slowly. In most of these cases, the symptoms are temporary and usually abate as altitude acclimatization occurs. However, in extreme cases, altitude sickness can be fatal.

Okies, eps 11 and 12 are finally available, but it seems as if the series is taking the week off...some think it may be a "normal break", others have posited that there is a possibility due to the volcanic eruption. Hope there were no staff unluckily affected by that....

Actually, this week's broadcast was a special program Yama no Susume Second Season no Susume Part 2, probably a "making of" or publicity video with the seiyuu and stuff. I believe this has been planned since quite long in advance in order to correspond with the break between anime seasons.

Of course, the Mt. Ontake eruption was pretty terrible too; however, it's only connection to YnS directly is that at least one fan of the series was hiking on it (and eating Hinata-branded youkan, lol) at the time (see their tweets from Sept. 26).

I'm a bit disappointed because I would've liked to watch the special program even if just to get a rough grasp of what it was about, but not even a raw has been uploaded so we'll likely never know. It's good to see ep. 11 and ep. 12 subs, though, in any case. Off to download.

Glad to see these. I also am forced to admit that I would not have been happy to get episode 11 without episode 12 immediately following. It hurts seeing Aoi in that depressed state, and ending on an episode with her thinking about giving up on mountain climbing altogether would have just been too sad.

I was really glad to see Aoi pull herself out of that state, and with only the unintentional assistance from Hinata's letter. For all that I'm sure Kaede could have had some words of wisdom to help Aoi get back on her feet, and for all that I really love Kaede, I'm kind of glad that she wasn't around to solve the problem this time. She's been the reliable big sister for the girls many times in the past, giving simple but appropriate advice at just the right moment multiple times. I think it was good to show that Aoi cares enough to set her feet back on this path without that guidance.

I reacted the opposite way. I couldn't bear to watch the two back to back. Had to nerve myself for ep 12, watch some comedy.

Yes, I did feel sorry for Aoi as she'd not managed to get to the top, but I was greatly relieved that we didn't have too much moping around, and that receiving the postcards from the summit of Mt. Fuji reminded her why she wanted to climb in the first place.

It all worked out really well, and I loved the insert song. Great stuff..

Eps 11 and 12.

If I remember correctly the Insert Song in ep 12 was actually from Season 1 ... anyone else recall the same thing?

As for the contents of the eps proper, I was also pained with poor Aoi going through what she did. Poor girl. Totally understandable too. I also liked how Hina was sensitive (for a change ) and immediately picked up on Aoi's inner pain ... and gave her a little space for a while.

Yep. Played at the end of every episode. It felt appropriate, as Aoi essentailly went back to the beginning to rediscover her convictions.

I was also happy to see episode 11 and 12 back to back. I wouldn't have wanted to see Aoi stay depressed for too long.

Episode 12 was a stirring and impressive counterpoint to Episode 11. I think both episodes really, really cemented and built Aoi as a character, very strongly. It's major and well executed character development. And I marathoned that series from Episode 9-12.

I really loved that point where she went up the hill that started her journey, and realized how much easier it was - you could feel the tide of the previous three episodes suddenly reversing right at that point .Aoi hit her nadir when she was simply lying around at home and feeling something was missing in the scene just before that. That climb began her bounce back up, and I greatly look forward to it.

This were two very good episode - it's just a shame it was not granted the 20 minutes treatment.

How big is Yama no Sume in Japan by the way? I wonder whether we'd be having a third season - Kaede in the Japanese Alps certainly seems to be sequel hook, as Aoi and company tackle mountains that are potentially more challenging than Mount Fuji. I wouldn't be surprise if one of the mountains in the Japanese Alps that Kaede explored off screen this episode, would be used in the third season, with Kaede as a guide.

And here's to an enjoyable summer for Aoi and Hinata - I imagine they'd be exploring the hills near their town, and then the hills that lie just behind their local hills everyday. I wouldn't be surprised if they even try for an overnight camping in the hills a few dozen kilometers near their town, although I am not sure how comfortable Aoi's parents would be of that idea.

On another note, the Mount Fuji Arc made me regard Kokona as the best girl of the series - she has a fascinating personality behind that soft looking exterior. But the girl I am most impressed with is Kaede. She's a true leader, a worthy unofficial captain of their mountain climbing group. She was an amazing bro to Hinata during the Mount Fuji arc.

10/10 for the Mount Fuji arc.
