I think Naruto's Sadness and Sorrow (yeah, that's the title) is one of the most memorable sad theme songs for me:

Another one from the same series. I remember it was nicely used in around episode 134. I like the transition it does at 1:28.

Clannad's Snowfield tops it for me. It does need some context to fully experience, though. The piece pretty much leaks hopelessness.

Kanon's Kaze o Matta Hi has a lot of personal sadness for me, too. The scant instrumentation at the beginning builds into something heart-tugging, the repeated piano four-note sequence in the middle sounds like it's crying out.

Sometimes when I remember which scene this song first appeared in, I tear up.

Love it, thanks for sharing everyone! Need to dig up a few of these for my collection...

As for mine, I know it doesn't technically count exactly, but I just love the ending credits from Korra. Even learning it on my erhu

This is such a great song. The soundtrack for the third game in the series was clearly a notch below the previous two games thanks to the change in composer but this track in particular turned out particularly well (and worked even better in the latter moments of the game imho).

Clannad's (and Key in general) have this showdown for sad songs beat imho. Maybe that's just the stories mixing in with the songs in my mind that trigger the sadness but I can't help but turn melancholic at the sound of most songs, even some of the happier ones.

I'd add Chiisana te no hira to the list but I'm not sure if it's actually used in the games. It's still a great song and that beginning just gets to me: the piano version of the "dango daikazoku" tune reminds me of Nagisa (and anyone who's seen the show/played the game should know what that means in the latter half of the story).

Great songs. I personally keep Decretum permanently on my MP3 player. Such a great song.

I'll also add Heaven from the Persona 4 Soundtrack. Maybe it was just the part of the game where it was used that hit me but I found that it felt rather sad every time the song came up.

Best emotional/sad music in anime?

I think mine would have to be the "I say Yes" wedding variation from Zero no Tsukaima, season two, epic bossfight. It's so sad seeing an epic hero being killed, especially after we spent two seasons getting to know him. Also, it's conveniently the only version of the original I say Yes that I could find sheet music for, making it all the better!

If you want to watch the fight in context, zoom to 2:50 of this video. Obvious spoilers.
Spoiler for Video of Song in Context:

I'll have to listen through the Nadia The Secret Of Blue Water soundtrack CD's included in the box sets, some tracks would be suitable.
