What's happening on Pixiv? I noticed that many artists simply... disappeared (that is, their accounts and illustrations are no longer there).

Might be because of Chaos Lounge and their work.

A lot of artists had the work stolen, abused or destroyed in Chaos Lounge's own works. Pivix delayed punishing them for these acts for at least a few months (I'm not certain as to the timeline),issues started in 2010, and Pivix did not do anything until issues arose with works taken from Hakurei Jinja Reitaisai (Mar 14, 2011).

As a result a lot of artists left pivix during this time period, some to blogs or other art sites. But, I'm not certain which artists you were referring to, so I can't be certain if they left because of this or other reasons.
