a lot of the other characters are throw aways which i didn't like or hate.

i just ended up hating the 2 mains though... both index and touma i thought should go die in a car accident.

Can't stand Index and any character in an anime that is similar to her. Touma has his moments. Misaka is pure win though.

And yes Index is a pathetic excuse for a heroine. It looks even more ironic as the series tittle has her name in it as well. She should make a club with Tenma from School Rumble meant for the biggest heroine failures among fans.

Well, it's somewhat dubious as far as my... uh, "research" on it is concerned (after an effort of looking into it much), so I declare that my vote for her to be retracted; even though I can't do so. What a waste!

Until either the series' original illustrator (Kiyotaka Haimura) or author (Kazuma Kamachi) sheds a (visible) "light" on that matter, my declaration stands (depending on how it will turn out to be, though).

(well, to be honest, nothing of value was lost in this so called declaration of mine. Let's just say I like EVERYTHING MISAKA, except for Last Order due to my non-preference for lolis. )

It's not that he isn't popular, it's just that a lot of the other characters are simply a lot more interesting/cuter/awesome than him.

I mean, I like Touma, but Mikoto just... outstrips him in all three factors.

I'd say that its more character archetype + gender bias than anything else there man. Mikoto's cool, but way too wild and prone to breaking very expensive things. Although I do agree that being a glass cannon (i.e. being someone who incredibly weak when compared to other characters, but having one extreme talent) in a show like this wouldn't garner much popularity. The preaching/demoralization IMO is one of his weapons in battle so i see no problems with it.

I mean look at Index. The author is in between a rock and a hard place there. If Index has the ability to use magic, she'll be overkill because it seems she's got a ton of mana (not running out from using that Dragon's Breath spell after almost five minutes! Wow.) so they'd have to be a limiter. But limit her too much and she'll still seem lame, because all we'll remember is what she could have been. A time limit seems like the best choice, but not really sufficient.
