'Pacific Rim' (2013) - Guillermo Del Toro's Mecha VS. Kaiju film.

Just saw the film.

Thoughts

Spoiler for Spoiler:

1) Asian guys still not allowed to have a line in Hollywood. need white guys to cast Asian roles because god clearly will smite the film if we infidels appear.

2) How on Earth did the Chinooks (or whatever craft they used) lift a Gundam...I mean Jeager across the sea?

3) How did the Japanese girl manage to swim in full armor? o_O

4) Your plasma cannon is hooked to an Desktop? Was it charged by an UBS port?

5) Anyone ever thought about the Wall of Life being an dumb idea? The same metal used to pave a wall around all nations of Earth probably let you built entire regiment of Jaegers, if not entire field army of Jaegers.

6) Wait...is the AI voice from Portal?, YES IT IS XD

7) A Nuclear weapon/Spawning of the Kajiu didn't cause tidal waves? I am suprised Hong Kong didn't get wiped out by wave size of empire state building.

Other than that, great eye candy all a around. I got a great chuckle out of it. I heard there was as much as a hour worth of filming chopped off. Very sad~

Although buried by the overwhelming praise of the film, I occasionally come across reviews that disliked the film calling it "it's just Transformers vs Godzilla".
Besides the fact that that's pretty much the premise of the entire movie that's obvious before they even set a foot in the theaters, I must be missing here, what exactly about "Transformers vs Godzilla" is not made of 100% awesomeness?

Sheesh next thing they'll start telling me "Jackie Chan vs Zombies" is a bad idea!

It basically homage to the Old school Super Robot genre ( The nostalgia of my youth) which done just right the action great it is a great action/adventure movie which quite unique in Hollywood ...... in the resent action Hollywood movies they them to film it like a war film that it deviates for the original genre which is action and adventure

It a fun movie to watch

Kinda late to give comment here due my Internet at home down for not paying the bill. Anyway, I was watching the movie yesterday and it really jaw-breaking awesome and totally cancelling the apocalypse!

Highly recommended for the mecha fans as well as the movie goers. Can't really wait for the director's cut because I heard that the movie had some scenes cutting out because of the time constraint. My rate for this movie is 5/5.

Just watched it.

Didn't realise that it was 2.5 hours. Thought it was too short, and i wanted more. And they already jumped right into the actions, rather than dragging too long on unnecessary background and etc...

Really enjoyable. At some points my fists just can't stop moving with how excited it was. Of course it was not perfect, but very well directed, and very promising. My only complaint was the chances to build it up for the 2nd movie (in after credits perhaps). Obviously the scale was played down, but i want a hint on more robot actions. The first true mecha movie i watched since a long time. And no, Transformers are just a bunch of CGI thingys, that does not behave like robot at all.

Not enough... IT NOT ENOUGH !!!

Make a cartoon series! An Anime! A comic! A manga! A novel! A LIGHT novel! Hell, even a freaking game! There's just too much more I want to see ! There is definitely a lot of potential for this to be a brand new franchise on it's own, something that we sorely need to break away from Superheros, Vampires and Zombies.

I heard that there was a lot of footage cut from the theatrical release, so maybe we'll get to see an extended edition on BD/DVD.

It felt too short. That's how immersive it is. It never felt draggy at any point, and it totally didn't feel like 2.5hrs.

Loved it. Seeing the kaiju and the mecha storylines intertwined with each other was wonderful to behold. Newt being Pacific Rim's Dr. Serizawa (bit of a stretch to compare those two) as his story ran parallel to the mecha one was interesting to behold, particularly with how both genres meshed with each other.

I found the reaction of Herc Hansen at the end a bit unrealistic, he just lost a son whom he ask Pentecost to bring back yet he seems OK (BTW, his rank seems to be Marshall since he was addressed that when he said to stop the clock). Why did Miko and Raleigh have an ejection system yet the Striker Eureka did not. Not that it will do Chuck much good though...

Striker Eureka was ejecting in a nuclear bomb blast....nothing would had saved them. It is assumed (by hollywood logic) that Danger's ejection pods got Teleported back rather than getting mixxed in the explosion.

As for the Russians/Chinese/Everyone else appear not to have one....who knows.

Worth my money. However it's a bit disconcerting that I was the only one actually enjoying it in the local cineplex, as the rest of the audience don't seem to get it (or that they're not quite into del Toro's frequency).

One thing is for sure: we'll be seeing more of Rinko Kikuchi.

Some people, after the viewing I was in ended, were complaining about the lack of big-name Hollywood stars. Others were groaning about the lack of sex appeal, or how there was no romance. There were quite a lot of people who were floored by the movie's straightforward premise and execution.

I couldn't stop laughing.

They probably don't realising the monsters were the stars. That it is essentially gladiatorial combat. Yes, it is about survival, but it isn't about good vs evil. Maybe that's why the original American Godzilla had the "American army saves the day and it was all the French's fault." theme. The GINO was made to American story telling conventions and it failed.

No matter; the audience will learn to appreciate it soon enough. They will understand eventually.
