As for the ratings it seems that SEED´s 15 minutes of fame is about to end but still I think the team behind SEED should be proud that their show(s) and characters lasted in the absolute top for so long. And still is lasting in high positions in a few of the polls. I´d say that this is something that makes me 100% certain that this isn´t the last we´ve seen of SEED. A well made movie/OVA/full lengt Gundam SEED show could very well become a real cash cow for the milkers.

Of course not. The question is, can there exist Gundam Seed without the original cast. Aside from the OVAs, every UC series after Char's Counterattack has not fared that well. Bandai foresaw this, which is partially why Stargazer was given a trial experiment through sunrise's online distribution network. And they know there's problems, mainly that if Kira and Lacus aren't present, the show won't be fare quite as well. If Char is the spitting image of the Universal Century, and Kira is his counterpart, this will prove to be a very large problem if sunrise hopes to continue doing stories within the CE universe.

Not true... The OYW OVAs (notably 0083 and 08th MS Team) were some of the best selling video series ever in Japan, and OYW stuff continue to do well regardless of whether Char or Amuro are in.

UC's popularity was mostly thematic and settings based, and later UC shows like F91 and Victory didn't retain the OYW popularity most likely because their very different style and technology made things too different from classic OYW.

The thing about CE, though, is its extremely large female fanbase, which is more concerned for the characters than the setting or the mecha. This different fanbase means that one cannot do with CE what Sunrise did with UC, which is to use a new cast of character for every show. They tried that with Destiny in the beginning and it didn't work, and they were forced to bring Kira back to a prominent role. So indeed, any CE show without Kira and the rest of the Big Four will probably be doomed to failure.

I can only speak for myself but just like FMP wouldn´t be FMP without Sousuke and Kaname. SEED wouldn´t feel like SEED if they ditch the original cast. It doesn´t feel to farfetched to write that people who want to see more of SEED and the CE wants to see more of the characters that we´ve gotten to learn rather than the universe/world. I think that a full 50 episodes without anyone from the original cast (excluding Destiny in this) would be a risky endeavour. If they don´t want to use the original cast at all I think it would be better to use the ova format like 08th MS Team or Macross Zero or do a movie.

Well, Cagalli has been steady in Gundam Ace polling for a while if you check the last few months Gundam Ace polling. Athrun Zala seemed dropping rapidly in Animedia monthly ranking. Lacus has not even been within the Animage monthly ranking for number of months.

Also, the 56th Gundam National Census for the following question:

"Summer swimming suits! In Gundam Seed or Gundam Seed Destiny, which female character will you like to see in swimming suit?"

The last time I checked this polling progress, Cagalli had been ahead of all female characters (including Lacus). I think the final result will be announced next week. I'll update this post once I see the result.

I can't believe Patrick still hasn't passed Kira in the polls.

I can't believe he did NOT even make it into one of the positions.

EDIT: No wait, he did!

But Position number 20+ is an insult to him!! He was the first one to critically injure a Meister! (By sheer luck that is, if the GN-Arms came earlier, he won't be in the polls...)

Still, I'm most impressed over how Gato has managed to hold on to his position in the top then during all these SEED years. I guess it's all the SRW, ACE and other games in which he appears that are a tribute to him.

People want her in a bathing suit just to be sure she's still a girl. Even her own brother can be surprised that she's a girl.

But seriously, she can be pretty for an anime character.

I feel sorry if he ever utters that sentence again. Third time's a charm, they say, and I don't think even being the Ultimate Coordinator will save him from a pissed off anime girl.

And its kinda hard for an anime girl NOT to be pretty.

Are you serious? Nina is freaking horrendous, I've been wishing for her extermination ever since the start of the series.

There are many other un-attractive anime girls. They have a bunch in Naruto, and the original Gundam.

So how is what I said not true when you just repeated what I said =/

In fact, you made my point by citing the exact productions that fared well and not well.

I missed that OVA thing, but then again, your argument would be flawed then, since you didn't really explain why you are omitting the OVAs from the discussion.

My point was that UC's popularity was thematic/settings-based , while Seed's was character-based, and the popularity of the OVAs is evidence for that. That is why IMO you can't really compare the two and that is why while they can continue pumping out OVAs for UC with just the OYW setting, they have to include Kira/Lacus if they want to make any profit off any future Seed works, OVA or not.
