The Pinky and the Brain. They are just fantastic characters that offer such a change from the average mediocre nonsense of society. Come on: two lab rats attempting to free themselves. One a brilliant mind, the other the comical relief and voice of the commoner.

Growing up in the mid-nineties, the cartoons I was exposed to were probably second generations of their mid-80s originals. Having said that, my favorite cartoon series of all time would stem from that category: Batman Beyond.
At first glance it does come off as another series that seeks to use the "ZOMG EXTREME!1lol" gimmick. But look past this and you'll see actual writing (!) and tons of noir-esq sensibility all around. On a side note, old Bruce Wayne is probably the single most badass old person in the entire history of badass old persons. |

Old Bruce Wayne was done perfectly. It makes sense that as he gets older and his physical abilities decrease, he would turn to technology for the edge he needs to stay on top. Without the suit, he can still kick ass -- but only for a very short period of time, then his body suddenly reminds he's eighty years old. As a comic-book fan, I also dig that Terry is far more 'human' than the human Wayne -- he's bright, but not a super-genius who manages to know every single martial art known to man as well as a PhD in every branch of science. |
