Quite a phenomenon. I don't know how this 2channel popularity compares with great shows of the past. Maybe kj1980 or Sushi-Y or someone else does.
Well, just from a quantitative perspective, here are the numbers for 2ch threads that have exceeded the 200 mark.

Gundam Seed/Gundam Seed Destiny combined thread since Oct 2002: 732
Ojamajo Doremi series thread since Feb 1999: 291
Mai HiME thread since Sep 2004: 272
Mai Otome thread since Oct 2005: 265 (nearly 266)
Pani Poni Dash! thread since Jul 2005: 240 (nearly 241)
Rozen Maiden Traumend thread since Oct 2005: 231
Rozen Maiden thread since Oct 2004: 208

From this, you can tell that Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu is moving at an unprecedented pace which will topple 300 threads by the time it finishes airing.

Although the number of 2ch threads/posts is not necessarily indicative of a show's popularity in terms of ratings or DVD sales, it is certainly an indicator of the popularity within the otaku community, the primal target for late night shows.

If the producers are using 2ch boards as referential material for consideration of a sequel, SHnY has a great chance.

Do they count the actual separate posters? or just the "spammy" number of posts.

I'm kind of absurd myself in the number of posts I throw out but I'm still only going to buy one set (maybe one more as a gift) of a manga and a few figurine knickknacks.

Doesn't sound terribly useful if its 4 or 5 posters having one of those idiotic "my girl is best" flame wars.

edit: just watched ep 5 again.... it is just glorious watching Suzumiya's swath of energy and the way she moves. If a girl lunged over her desk at me like that, I'd be incapable of noticing anything else.

Spoiler:

Probably repeating myself... but I just can't believe the multiple layering of information that spray out of this show. fabulous.

Well since posting on 2ch is 'anonymous' i.e. you can't really tell separate posters, there's no real way of knowing.

Are these the only shows which have surpassed 200 threads or just a sample?
I'm surprised the Rozen series are so popular.

And I wonder where Haruhi went on that day. I wonder when the sequel will air. If I recall correctly, the current anime covers vol 1-3 only right?

He probably thought Rozen Maiden wasn't popular, because most of RozenM's posts were wiped during the Great Forum Crack incident. So the thread looked small when it really wasn't.

Sorry if someone already posted...but take this:

That is the task I have performed since I was born three years ago.
During the past three years, no uncertain elements appeared.
The situation was extremely stable.
However, recently an irregular factor which cannot go unheeded has appeared near Haruhi Suzumiya.
That would be...
*stare*
...you.
From the prespective of the Data Integration Thought Entity the third planet of this solar system at the edge of the Milky Way held no significant merit.
However, Earth, as it is called by its present inhabitant life forms was home to evolution of bipedal organic life forms whom developed cognitive ability which could be considered intelligence and consequently, this planet grew in significance.
Perhaps, they possessed the potential to break free of the cul-de-sac of autoevolution into which they have fallen.
The emergence of self-awareness among the universe's maldistributed organic life forms was a common phenomenon however, Terrestrial humans were the first instance of evolution to a higher order of intelligence.
The Integration Thought Entity carefully continued through observation.
And three years ago, We observed a data flare unlike any other witnessed on this planet.
An explosion of data erupting from a region of a bow-shaped archipelago instantly shrouded the planet and diffused into outer space.
At its center was Haruhi Suzumiya
Over three years a number of inquiries have been performed examining the existence known as Haruhi Suzumiya from all prespectives...
However, her true identity remains unknown.
Regardless, a sector of the Integration Thought Entity believes that for humanity and futhermore, for us data life forms, Haruhi Suzumiya is the key to our autoevolution and have thus commenced analysis accordingly.
They, as data life forms are unable to directly communicate with organic life forms, for they possess no language.
Humans lack the means to transmit ideas without words.
That is why human purpose interfaces such as myself were created.
The Data Integration Thought Entity is able to come in contact with humans through me.
Haruhi Suzumiya holds hidden potential for autoevolution.
It is likely that she possesses the ability to control data in her surrounding environment as she wishes.
That is why I am here.
Why you are here.
You have been chosen by Haruhi Suzumiya.
Whether or not Haruhi Suzumiya is aware of it her consciousness has an effect on the environment in the form of unconditional data.
There must be a reason why you were chosen.
You and Haruhi Suzumiya hold all potential within your grasp.
A large sector of the Data Integration Thought Entity has recognized that if Haruhi Suzumiya becomes aware of her own value and ability there is the potential for indeterminable risks.
We must observe the situation for now.

Woah... *looks at novel Ch 3 translation* Yeah that's quite an effort there. As mentioned several pages ago, it was a nice that Kyo Ani decided to not have Yuki say everything that she did in the novel - can't fit it all in within a reasonable time interval.

lol...I was quite glad when I realized that they didn't put the whole thing in. Typing all these out while watching the anime is quite a challenge to my typing skills. At one point I have to pause 'cause I couldn't keep up...

Thanks for typing it out, it was fun being able to read it again. And the fact that you only had to pause once is testament to great typing skills!

My god... Five episodes straight and I'm still itching for more. What kind of stuff are they putting in this show? Hypnotic suggestion? Subliminal messages?

C-can I still be considered a man?!

Wish they would actually translate the manga. Novels are okay but the whole personality and everything is just missing by reading a novel. Hurry up episode 6

Don't worry, it's just doku-denpa emitted by Haruhi. Despite the name, they're completely harmless, as long as Haruhi is in a good mood. Not to mention the excellent job KyoAni's been doing with the series.
