Unknown so far. It could be a remake too properly adapt the manga like fma brotherhood and eventually get into new ground or it could even be just a series of oads that bundle with the manga volumes to adapt important events in the new manga.

It might actually say that the second season may depend heavily on the sales of the first.

Yeah, what it says is that they'd love to make a second season but it'd be difficult unless they increase their sales, and that the contrast between their sales and SAO is extreme. (But this has been the case for a while now; the top-sellers are typically way above the median.) So at this point, there's no announcement of a second season, and the suggestion that it may not happen based on current sales. Of course, this too is a sort of marketing strategy -- maybe they hope to convince a few more people on the fence... Conventional wisdom would put the sales in the "just above average, but not quite high enough for a likely sequel" range, so this makes sense.

That same strategy was attempted with Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko to no avail

Didn't that sell relatively well though? Something like 8k?

Final average over all the volumes was 6,655 (as it demonstrated the typical drop-off after volume 1). Still pretty good, and could still be good enough for a second season eventually. Shaft has other projects on their plate right now anyway, so it's probably too soon to say for sure that it was or wasn't good enough.

The Light Novel story is over already though... I'm not sure how much of an incentive they'll have in making another Anime...

Well, in that case, you could also argue that it may not have been dependant on sales in the first place (since they may have already been booked for other things). I guess you never know, but I do agree that this makes it less likely on the whole.

Well, I can only hope at least. I just hope this isn't something that brings up hopes only to be disappointed in the end.

Yes, for now it isn't a new anime or anything else, but the goods available at Comiket include a Drama CD and a new novella written by the original author. I'm not sure how Overlap became involved in managing the brand through all this, but it looks like something has been worked out. Anyway, more can be discussed in the IS sub-forum.
