To those who live near outside of Japan, if you didn't get a chance to watch the movie yet, don't fear because the full movie (all 14 shorts) will be premiering at the Kennedy Center as part of the Japan! festival (February 15-16, 2008). For more info go here: ANN News: Genius Party International Premiere

Mind you it is an international premiere, so there might be plans to release the film worldwide.

Seems interesting, though I'm only familiar with these guys through a couple of their series. Quite a few of them have worked on Akira. Anyhow, animation is well and good and all, but I just hope whatever story they come up with deserves it. I like the looks of Baby Blue, because the clouds are beautiful, but the last time I watched an anime because I liked the way the clouds looked in it I was disappointed. Hope this doesn't become a trend.

Some new information from Pelleas' Ben:

Quote:
Seems Genius Party is scheduled for two parts. The first part announced for this summer comprises seven shorts, conspicuously not including those of Shinya Ohira, Koji Morimoto, or Tatsuyuki Tanaka, three notoriously slow and maniacal animators. At least Masaaki Yuasa's and Atsuko Fukushima's pieces are in there. If I recall correctly, Yuasa's piece was in fact finished more than a year ago(?!). I was wondering how they were possibly going to fit all of those shorts into the span of a full-length feature. It makes sense that they'd split it in two. They've even already scheduled the world premiere for next February in New York.

Here's a list of those who'll be in the first film.

«Genius Party», Atsuko Fukushima (Robot Carnival, AKIRA). BTW, she is Koji Morimoto's wife. 8)

«Space-Time Wars», Shoji Kawamori (Macross, Tenkuu no Escaflowne)

«Death Take Four», Shinji Kimura (Tenshi no Tamago, Tekkon Kinkreet)

«Doorbell», Yoji Fukuyama (he's actually a professional mangaka, not an animator)

«Limit Cycle», Hideki Futamura (Perfect Blue, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust)

«Dream Machine», Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, Kemonozume)

«Baby Blue», Shinichiro Watanabe (Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop)

Seems like Watanabe is going for a different style and mood this time, on line with the more reflexive Bebop's episodes, although still unusual for him. That's the feeling I get from the scenes in the trailer, anyway.

Thank you, that trailer was amazing. By the looks of it seems like Yuasa is going back to Mindgame’s crazy style rather than the mostly cold and somber tone of Kemonozume. Genius Party and Space-Time Wars look both also visually impressive, both with unique color and character designs. I'm on the fence on Death Take Four for it being 3D, but we'll see. Doorbell is indeed the work of a mangaka as framing and composition were really good and evocative while it having near no-movement and I guess I need more Limit Cycle footage to make my mind on it, but it does look interesting.

As for Baby Blue, it is indeed looking much quieter than the rest of Watanabe's work, like a stylish Shinkai short film. I'm really looking forward to this, but I guess anyone who really likes anime should be so that's meaningless.

Most of them were posted last year (http://www.catsuka.com/news_detail.php?id=1135205853) on Catsuka and recently on kojimorimoto.net

All images are different, with newly added and removed directors, and Maeda was cancelled after that news due to him being busy on Penny(?) Sue yet is now listed again.

NP- on topic, I am glad to see Maeda back although I still think Peggy, I was wrong before, Sue was best fit for it's original director Mamoru Hosoda, but I am a Hosoda fanboy so what would I know.

Indeed, most of the images I recently posted on Catsuka and Kojimorimoto.net are new.
My aim was also to keep people informed about this strange project where the shorts by Mahiro Maeda and Hiro Yamagata appeared, disappeared, and re-appeared ... and where "Tuoni" short by Tadashi Hiramatsu seems to have definitively disappeared.

I also noticed that there's now 4 Genius Party trailers, also available for download :
#1 : http://www.genius-party.jp/podcast/movies/pdc070307.mov
#2 : http://www.genius-party.jp/podcast/movies/pdc070319.mov
#3 : http://www.genius-party.jp/podcast/movies/pdc070320.mov
#4 : http://www.genius-party.jp/podcast/movies/pdc070322.mp4

At least, it was also important to give the right or new titles of the shorts (as we can read now on the official website) :

GENIUS PARTY VOL.1
- "Genius Party" (Opening) by Atsuko Fukushima
- "Shanghai Dragon" (was Space-Time Wars) by Shoji Kawamori
- "Deathtic 4" by Shinji Kimura
- "Doorbell" by Yoji Fukuyama
- "Limit Cycle" by Hideki Futamura
- "Happy Machine" (was Dream Machine) by Masaaki Yuasa
- "Baby Blue" by Shinichiro Watanabe

GENIUS PARTY VOL.2
- "Gala" (was Nayorani) by Mahiro Maeda
- "Tojin Kit" by Tatsuyuki Tanaka
- "Wanwa, the Puppy" by Shinya Ohira
- "Dimension Bomb" by Koji Morimoto
- "Moon Drive" by Kazuto Nakazawa
- "Le Manchot Mélomane" by Nicolas by Crécy
- (Untitled) by Hiro Yamagata

PS : sorry for my approximative english
