Decided to post Inappropriate Language to ff.net after all. Glad you guys found it amusing.

Oh, and DC, I wasn't quite happy with that line, either. But I made a modification to it that should enhance it somewhat.^^

*Snicker* Yes, I like the irony at the end there .

It might just be me though, but I think that the added bit, while tying in more tightly with the humour earlier, seems to throw the bunch of the ending off a little bit. Like, it felt snappier to me when it had just ended with Arf saying "Figures, that dumb bastard." But at the same time, the new addition adds a nice level of irony...I dunno .

“Here are the reports you asked for, Commander Hayate.” Vivio said as she plopped a stack of papers down onto Hayate’s desk.

“Thanks, Vivio.” Hayate smiled at the younger girl. “I knew I could count on you.”

It had been over a year since Vivio became Hayate’s subordinate. The teen had decided to enlist in the Bureau rather than attend high school, much like Hayate herself had done all those years ago. Vivio was already bright, a pro at research, and a valuable asset on the battlefield so Hayate made sure to snap up such a talent for herself. The addition bore fruit quickly and the commander soon found herself with an excellent aide.

Something had been amiss during the past few days, though. Hayate noticed how Vivio seemed to be keeping her distance and became kind of antsy while in Hayate’s presence. Even now as the brunette studied the blonde, Vivio squirmed in place and avoided eye contact when she wasn’t taking quick peeks.

“Say, Vivio, has there been something bothering you lately?” Hayate asked. The well being of subordinates was part of her job as well, but she also had a far more personal investment. She had known the girl since she was a toddler and considered her valuable family. Vivio was usually so cheerful so seeing her like this was most upsetting.

“I’m fine.” Vivio waved it off but the way her eyes darted to the left was an obvious tell.

“Don’t give me that.” Hayate wagged a finger. “I can tell something is on your mind. I may be your superior, but I’m also kind of like your aunt. You can talk to me about anything.”

“… Anything?” Vivio asked sheepishly.

“Anything.” Hayate nodded while wearing a reassuring smile. “You don’t need to worry about me judging you or telling anyone else, so spill.”

“Okay.” Vivio gathered up her resolve and looked Hayate in the eye. “Hayate-san, I’m in love with you!”

“Can’t say I blame you, I’m so gorgeous and all.” Hayate laughed. “No, seriously, what is it?”

“I’m being completely serious.” Vivio said firmly.

“… Really?” Hayate blinked.

“Yes. I love you, Hayate-san!”

Hayate’s eyes widened slightly before narrowing a bit. It was quite clear that Vivio was dead serious. Hayate would have to handle the situation as delicately as she did hostage negotiations or asking for an increase in budget.

At that moment Hayate thought she’d rather be doing those other two things. Matters pertaining to love were never easy.

“I’ve had a crush on you since I was twelve.” Vivio explained. “I thought it was just that and figured it would pass in time, but it hasn’t. Recently I realised these feelings for you are true and I didn’t know how to approach you…”

“And you’re sure it’s me?” Hayate asked.

“Yes.” Vivio nodded firmly. “You’ve always been so cool but at the same time you’re warm and approachable. Working for you the past year has let me see how serious and mature you can be but you can quickly revert back to the happy and fun loving person I’ve always known. You’re just so amazing! You’ve always been nice to me, it feels so wonderful to spend time with you, and…” Her face turned crimson. “… It feels good when you touch me…”

Hayate never thought her groping would backfire on her so spectacularly.

“So…” Vivio looked up hopefully. “I… I want to go out with you… Can I?”

Hayate took a deep breath and decided on her words. “I appreciate your feelings, Vivio, but I’m sorry that’s just not possible.”

Vivio’s face fell for an instant before displaying the trademark Takamachi determination.

“Why not?” She asked. “Is it because of the difference in ages?”

“That’s one aspect.” Hayate said.

“That’s not a problem! Strictly speaking we’re both official residents of Earth and romantic relations are one of the issues covered under the Bureau law that won’t punish us for following the standards of our home country. In Japan a girl of 16 can marry if she has her parents’ permission. If we talk to Nanoha-mama, I know we can convince her!”

“Hmm…” Was all Hayate said.

“So what other problem is there? Our positions?” Vivio went on. “There’s nothing in Bureau policy that forbids superior-subordinate relationships. Just look at Chrono-san and Amy-san! But if it will cause problems for your reputation I can resign!”

“No need to go that far.” Hayate said.

“Then there’s no problem.” Vivio beamed.

“Listen, Vivio, I’m flattered, really I am, and I care about you a lot too, but you’re the daughter of one of my best friends. I’ve known you since you were six and I consider you to be a valued member of my family. I can’t see you in a romantic light any more than I could see any of my own kids that way.”

“You won’t know until you give it a chance.” Vivio said. “Please, Hayate-san, don’t give up before even trying!”

Hayate sighed at the girl’s persistence. She was her mother’s daughter all right.

“There’s one other thing you have to consider, Vivio.” Hayate mused that she should probably have brought it up at the start.

“And what’s that?”

“I’m straight.” Hayate said it gently and let the words sink in. “I don’t see other women that way.”

Vivio opened her mouth but Hayate held up a finger to silence her.

“I grope other girls as a sign of affection, not to sate any kind of sexual lust.” Hayate watched as the gears turned in Vivio’s head, clearly trying to form some kind of rebuttal.

“… Still, if you gave it a try maybe…”

“Vivio, now you’re being unreasonable.” Hayate smiled sympathetically. “People can’t just change their sexuality so easily whenever it’s convenient. I’m sorry but it’s just not possible for me to return your feelings.”

Vivio opened her mouth again but closed it and dropped her head so her bangs covered her eyes. After a moment she came back up with a sad smile on her face.

“I see.” She said. “I guess there’s nothing I can do then but it was worth a shot. I suppose I expected this, but I just had to get this off my chest. I’m sorry for springing this on you so suddenly, Commander Hayate. Now if you’ll excuse me…”

Hayate watched her go, wondering how far she would get before she couldn’t hold back the tears. Hayate wanted to go after her, to hug her, stroke her hair, tell her it was okay, but she knew that would only make things worse.

She hating thinking that she had just lost a precious loved one but she knew it had to be done.

Hayate busied herself with reading reports and soon an hour and a half passed. Factoring in explanation and travel time Hayate calculated she would have a vistor in 3, 2, 1…

“Hayate-chan, can I come in?” She heard a voice follow a knock.

“Come in, Nanoha-chan.” Hayate sat back as her friend entered. She gestured to a visitor chair and Nanoha sat in it. “I figured you’d come.”

“Obviously you know what this is about…” Nanoha smiled sheepishly. “She told me what happened when she got home. I know it’s really not my business, but… Hayate-chan could you maybe… reconsider?”

“I could reconsider but we’ll just end up at the same result.” Hayate sighed.

“Maybe you could change your mind? It would make her really happy…”

“Nanoha-chan, what do you want me to do.” Hayate threaded her fingers in front of her face. “Pretend that I return her feelings? Wouldn’t that be even crueller to her, living a lie like that? Pressuring me into it won’t make anyone happy either.”

“I know, I know…” Nanoha sighed. “It’s not fair to expect those things from you, but… My little girl is at home crying right now and… I just want to do something for her to make it all better…”

“That’s called being a mother.” Hayate dropped her hands and smiled. “I know how you feel since I’m a mother too. All you can do is be there for her and help her through this. Vivio is a strong girl and I know she’ll overcome this. She just needs some time and I’m sure she’ll find a new love before she knows it.”

“I hope you’re right.” Nanoha rose. “Thanks, Hayate-chan, for handling this so well.”

“I don’t know about that.” Hayate chuckled bashfully. “I was freaking out for a moment there…” Hayate shifted to a serious tone. “Tell Vivio that if she wants to submit a request for vacation time, or a transfer, or even resignation I’ll sign off on it right away.”

“I’ll tell her.” Nanoha smiled before leaving. “Thanks again, Hayate-chan. I’m glad it was you.”

I'm surprised at how...what's the word..."civil" the conversation between Nanoha and Hayate went. Too many fanfictions with exagerrated-overprotective-mother Nanoha plaguing my mind. lol

Granted, as is my wont, I've chosen to take a slightly differing viewpoint on the relationship between the two. One that, I hope, will be appreciated.

Vivio paced back and forth outside the office, unsure if this was the right path. If there was a right path for a situation like this.

No. No, no matter what happens, I have to do this. I have to be honest, with myself… and her.

And with that thought, Vivio stepped forward into the office of Hayate Yagami to do the hardest thing she’d ever done.

Hayate looked up as the younger woman entered her office, her smile illuminating the room. Vivio’s heart sank. This was going to be… much harder than she’d thought.

“Vivio, come in,” Hayate said warmly. “How are you? Is there something I can help you with? You know you can ask me anything.”

“… right. Um… General Yagami…” Vivio began.

“No need for ranks between us, Vivi.” Hayate said with a cheerful grin. “I mean, you’ve been my assistant for months and one of the most important people in my life for years. Please, call me Hayate.”

“Right. Hayate.” Vivio said, feeling her blood turn to ice. “Hayate… there’s something I really need to talk to you about.”

“Hmmmm? Are you all right? Is there something wrong?” Hayate asked, her expression turning solemn.

Oh, God, she’s really, really worried about me. That just makes this a million times worse. Vivio thought. “Um… okay. Actually, yes. Something is wrong. Very wrong. And it’s about you.”

“Eh? Vivio… please. If I’ve done something offend you…” Hayate began.

“No. Not… offend, exactly.” Vivio said. “It’s like this. I’ve known you all my life… or as long as I’ve known I had a life, I know that’s not the same thing, exactly. But lately, I’ve noticed some things… changing. Ever since I turned twelve or so, really, but I don’t think I wanted to admit it…”

“Vivio…” Hayate said. “… please. Just tell me what’s…”

“All right. All right.” Vivio interrupted. “It’s best to just come out and say it, you’re right.

“Hayate… I’m not in love with you.”

Hayate’s expression resembled that of someone who has just opened her eyes first thing in the morning to find her alarm clock has inexplicably transformed into a fish.

The older woman, a renowned military officer and politician who made public speeches on a daily basis, opened her mouth several times, but no sound came out. Finally, after a positively Herculean effort, she managed to produce, “… … … huh?”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to tell you this… I know how much you like me. You’ve never said it, but you made your feelings very clear.” Vivio said apologetically.

“… … … I have?” Hayate croaked.

“The way you’re nicer to me than everyone else… the constant little smiles and efforts to remove formality between us… the way you picked me out of every other officer in the service to be your personal assistant...”

“Vivio! I… none of that was done for…” Hayate began, but oddly enough having a gigantic dose of confusion injected directly into her brain was affecting her eloquence, and Vivio was on a roll.

“Oh, I’m sure you’d say it was just because we’re like family, but I know better.” Vivio said. “I’ve seen how you smile when you see me.”

“No you haven’t!” Hayate fairly well shrieked. “Trust me! Really! I smile like that at everybody!”

“Oh, Hayate.” Vivio said, tears gleaming in her eyes. “Maybe… maybe you could get away with that. If it weren’t for… for…”

She stopped at this moment, not sure how to put this. “The… the…” Another deep breath, another effort to calm her heart. “… the groping.”

“… … … … …” Hayate said. Vita always did warn me that would come back to bite me some day. I just didn’t listen because I was feeling her up at the time. Possibly a mistake.

“God, you have no idea how uncomfortable that made me. I’ve known you since I was six! You’re like my aunt! And I could have ignored all the rest of it, but… I mean, it started as soon as I hit puberty and never stopped, even once I was your assistant! I… Aunt Hayate… I have to call you ‘aunt’, I’m sorry, because I need to remind you what we are to each other… Aunt Hayate, I tried to ignore it, because I love you and I didn’t want to break your heart, but that’s sexual harassment. More, it just made me feel so wrong. Like I was bathing in eel slime.”

“… … … … I’m sure it wasn’t that bad…” Hayate muttered.

“Vile. Sick. Uncomfortable in my own skin.” Vivio said, shuddering.

“Just a bit of affection, really, meaningless…”

“Like… like a piece of meat being pawed at by some vile old butcher, his apron covered in grease and blood from the other helpless animals he’s victimized, but I couldn’t say anything because you’re family and--” Vivio said, her tone haunted.

“All right! I get it!” Hayate snapped. “I… Vivio, I’m sorry, but really, skinship isn’t anything terribly unusual. It’s just… well, just how some women interact in a public bath, and…”

“Oh, Aunt Hayate.” Vivio said, tears glittering in her eyes. “Still trying to deny it… I understand. This must be so hard for you.”

“Well, yes, but not in the way you seem to think it is." Hayate admitted.

"I really am sorry. I understand how you feel… I’m young, vibrant, energetic. I know that can be alluring to a woman of your age…”

“A woman of my WHAT?!”

“… but that’s just one more problem in this long list of problems, you see?” Vivio said. “I’m half your age! Even if we weren’t family, it should be obvious that I’m too young for you.”

“Yes! Yes, of course you are, but not because I'm old or anything, I have to stress th—“

“Shhhh.” Vivio said, pressing a finger to Hayate’s lips to silence her. “I know. I know that you’d say anything to avoid admitting your true feelings. I understand that, now… it’s easier to go into denial than to face the pain. And it must be even harder for you… at your age, you must be wondering if you’ll ever meet anyone else ever again!”

“… Okay, seriously now Vivio, just how old do you think I am?!” Hayate asked.

“But I know you will, Aunt Hayate. You really are a wonderful person, and I know you’ll meet someone who can be the love you deserve. It just… won’t be me.” Vivio said. With a sad smile, she turned to leave the office. “I… I think you should look for a new assistant. And… really, stop with the groping. You’re going to get sued.”

The young woman turned and left, leaving Hayate staring blankly at the closed door.

“Um… Signum?” She said, keying the comm system.

“Yes, Mistress?” The Knight of the Sword said, answering the communiqué from her own office.

“I need you to contact Nanoha and tell her that her daughter is requesting a transfer for… um… personal reasons, I suppose. … and Signum, by chance, do you ever think my skinship habit might send the wrong message somet—“

“Yes.” Signum said without hesitation.

“… … … … … that will be all, thank you.”

Hayate briefly sat back, contemplating the day’s events. Then, in the grand tradition of all great authority figures, she reached into her desk, pulled forth a bottle of something very, very strong, and poured herself a shot.

“Computer, take a memo. Interviews for my new assistant start tomorrow… and, um, just to be safe, perhaps you should find me a copy of Midchildan sexual harassment laws and get me the number of a good lawyer.” She said.

She threw her head back and downed the glass in one go.

“Maybe I am getting old.” She muttered.

“Vivio! I… none of that was done for…” Hayate began, but oddly enough having a gigantic dose of confusion injected directly into her brain was affecting her eloquence, and Vivio was on a roll.

“Oh, I’m sure you’d say it was just because we’re like family, but I know better.” Vivio said. “I’ve seen how you smile when you see me.”

“No you haven’t!” Hayate fairly well shrieked. “Trust me! Really! I smile like that at everybody!”

“Oh, Hayate.” Vivio said, tears gleaming in her eyes. “Maybe… maybe you could get away with that. If it weren’t for… for…”

She stopped at this moment, not sure how to put this. “The… the…” Another deep breath, another effort to calm her heart. “… the groping.”

“… … … … …” Hayate said. Vita always did warn me that would come back to bite me some day. I just didn’t listen because I was feeling her up at the time. Possibly a mistake.

“God, you have no idea how uncomfortable that made me. I’ve known you since I was six! You’re like my aunt! And I could have ignored all the rest of it, but… I mean, it started as soon as I hit puberty and never stopped, even once I was your assistant! “Computer, take a memo. Interviews for my new assistant start tomorrow… and, um, just to be safe, perhaps you should find me a copy of Midchildan sexual harassment laws and get me the number of a good lawyer.” She said.

She threw her head back and downed the glass in one go.

“Maybe I am getting old.” She muttered.

“Shhhh.” Vivio said, pressing a finger to Hayate’s lips to silence her. “I know. I know that you’d say anything to avoid admitting your true feelings. I understand that, now… it’s easier to go into denial than to face the pain. And it must be even harder for you… at your age, you must be wondering if you’ll ever meet anyone else ever again!”

“… Okay, seriously now Vivio, just how old do you think I am?!” Hayate asked.

“But I know you will, Aunt Hayate. You really are a wonderful person, and I know you’ll meet someone who can be the love you deserve. It just… won’t be me.” Vivio said. With a sad smile, she turned to leave the office. “I… I think you should look for a new assistant. And… really, stop with the groping. You’re going to get sued.”

The young woman turned and left, leaving Hayate staring blankly at the closed door.

“Um… Signum?” She said, keying the comm system.

“Yes, Mistress?” The Knight of the Sword said, answering the communiqué from her own office.

“I need you to contact Nanoha and tell her that her daughter is requesting a transfer for… um… personal reasons, I suppose. … and Signum, by chance, do you ever think my skinship habit might send the wrong message somet—“

“Yes.” Signum said without hesitation.

“… … … … … that will be all, thank you.”

Hayate briefly sat back, contemplating the day’s events. Then, in the grand tradition of all great authority figures, she reached into her desk, pulled forth a bottle of something very, very strong, and poured herself a shot.

“Computer, take a memo. Interviews for my new assistant start tomorrow… and, um, just to be safe, perhaps you should find me a copy of Midchildan sexual harassment laws and get me the number of a good lawyer.” She said.

She threw her head back and downed the glass in one go.

“Maybe I am getting old.” She muttered.

LOL! Excellent! We've been taking the concept way too seriously lately.

Well here's a (roughly written) alternative if you're interested:

“I don’t know about that.” Hayate chuckled bashfully. “I was freaking out for a moment there…” Hayate shifted to a serious tone. “Tell Vivio that if she wants to submit a request for vacation time, or a transfer, I’ll sign off on it right away.”

There was a pause for a moment, images of a crying Vivio flashing in Hayate's eyes. The next sentence began with a stutter. "...and though I sincerely hope it wouldn't come to that, I will understand if she wants to resign."

“I’ll tell her.” Nanoha smiled before leaving. “Thanks again, Hayate-chan. I’m glad it was you.”

Something bugs me though. Hayate considers herself to a mother, yes? But had any of the Wolkies ever went through puberty during her time?

I rather quickly came to the conclusion that this thread has a herd mentality. Someone writes something; someone then comments. Then someone sees someone commented, so they make their own comment. It snowballs from there until another person sees all the positive comments the one writing is getting and then decides to write their own story related in some way it. Rinse and repeat.

How do you think the Shadowverse got to be so big?

Boredom. As in "so bored with the similarities shared by the majority of the current fics available that when a (relatively) fresh idea came out well, others start imagining their own take on the subject"

The same thing happened with Zero no Tsukaima before. Someone made an interesting story of Louise summoning EMIya Shirou, and soon enough a horde of "Lousie summons X" stories starts to pop out
