I think the most dangerous Pretty Cure villain I've seen is Poisony, because she (largely) fought with her head.

I've questioned the routine back in the Splash Star days... and I've come to the conclusion the villains are forced by some magical power to make incompetent monsters. Otherwise, why wouldn't they just kidnap the main characters in their sleep?

Well at least Siren has an excuse. All that brainwashing has probably affected her ability to create better tactics

So is Precure still largely about lolis pulling off God Hand style maneuvers on monsters and generally being a fighting anime at the same time it's a Magical Girl show? I ask cause I kind of need something a little lighter and fun for the summer weekends and kind of felt that the first Precure that I only saw a couple of episodes fit the bill but didn't really have time to pursue it then on account of a backlog of shows that is very rapidly dwindling.

You are right to assume you should only watch Pretty Cure when you have nothing left to watch. The writers for Suite are trying their hardest to infuse emotional scenes into the plot, and for the most part they succeed. I have Suite as my third favorite anime this season, behind C and Anohana. The main problem (or attraction, if you live by mahou shoujo) are unnecessarily long clips of stock footage: Transformation scenes, weapon summoning, and magical finishers. In addition, fight scenes are usually brief and sudden - they rarely go over two minutes. So I think you'll be a little surprised as to what Pretty Cure has "transformed" into after seven seasons, should you decide to give Suite a chance.

Hell with that, Suite is my most consistently watched anime of the season behind Steins;Gate. It's so charming and easy to watch.

I watch Suite along with Gosick, and it's not because there's nothing left to watch.

Madoka Magica is my most favourite anime, but I never forget the fun times with precure.

Madoka is great for what it was, but I have to spurt out: it was barely a magical girl show to me. It is a nice post-modern take on the magical girl genre, but there could have been more meat to it all.

While Precure is unabashed, full on magical girl show.

And I do agree these shows can use more plot-twists and more shocking revelations and mixing up the formula. Then again, they're balancing this trying to sell to little girls as well.

Suite is most definitly build around the twist that Aphrodite is evil. The Cures may end up in Major Land fighting against her. That big Organ is in my opinion a device to merge major and minor together after that fight (= harmonizer).

I thought the smartest part of the episode was commanding the Negatone to attack Hibiki and Kanade before they transformed. Siren has done so in the past, but this time it almost looked like Hibiki and Kanade were going to get crushed.

I wonder why Siren doesn't help out more often. Evil might actually have a chance if she does more than stand around and laugh.

Episode 17 Rating: 9/10 (Suite, I know I overrate you. But for lack of a better pun, you hit all the right notes today.)

Otokichi brings us in and plays us out with the song that lets the notes gather. It's at this stage, with a whole episode focusing around them, that I began to ponder. What is the physiology of a note? Some of them appear to be made of similar yet separate organisms, but they all are obviously of the same species. I could go with the explanation of them all being a magical personification, but after the instruments that play themselves in the first episode, I really have to wonder. Pretty much everyone showed up this week, with Ouji making the world all shiny with his walking Gaussian blur, and Souta and Ako stopping by to inquire if the note collecting was bug collecting. Couldn't help but be reminded of Maria Holic, though Souta doesn't have to deal with non-speaking crazy people. Mostly because he didn't run into Trio the Minor. Seeing them all attempt to become the leader creates a nice foil to the girls. Hummy may be a little pushier in getting people to work for him (ie. waking Hibiki up at about the same time her show airs), but they work earnestly and work together. Siren's apathy gets nothing accomplished. More on that later. The sun's rays pass through and create a newborn sky At our promised and awaited Morning Arch Note that nine times out of ten, the arch isn't trying to kill you. Muse appears yet again, and her releasing all the notes Trio the Minor had caught back into the wild (but weren't corrupted) may seem kind of dickish, but thinking about it, it's probably her idea of fairness. Better to be gathered by the heroines' own hands than taken from the villains'. Speaking of dickery, two weeks from now, Kyubey Evil!Hummy. The end of episode title card also hinted at Cure Beat. GokaiSilver debuted tonight. Soon he shall be joined in his block by another.

She really helped out a lot in this episode. The obvious stuff was with the negatone and giving Hibiki some space so she could run off and transform. But something more subtle was finishing off the healing of Hibiki's heart when it comes to playing the piano. Kanade has been huge in that respect in helping to undo the damage Hibiki's father did when she was a kid. He might not have had any negative intentions, but he did sour his child on music for a very long time due to being too serious and making riddles out of teaching a lesson. Hibiki's mother helped here in lighting up a dream in Hibiki's heart. At least Siren is trying. Using a mob against Hibiki was actually pretty clever.
