^ I use that argument in ST, to be honest.

First I want to make sure that the time travel is not bullshit, if it's true, then I'd freak out for a while before TRYING to recompose myself and again checking the credibility.

More like this: The Beginning of the bad future and the rregular one is the same, they diverge on the WK incident. In the regular timeline, all the missiles are stopped and Tabane takes credit for the IS intervention. On the BF, some missiles managed to get through and demolished civilian districts. Since she deemed the experiment a failure, Tabane erases all evidence of her involvement......including the fact that the missiles were fired without consent of the countries. With nobody to blame and Japanese city bombed by Russian and American Missiles in tandem, what do you think is going to happen?

Exactly:/ PT steps in later on when both sides are through beating each other up and use their "Newly found" IS tech to cull both sides to submission. With the loss of resources and lives from the TW, the IS became even more important than in the current verse.

I dunno.

Because weakening the major enemy is not enough, you have to establish a stable semblance of order in the place you conquered. If everyone still not obey them, they're going to be crushed sooner or later. Even if somehow you succeed with eliminating them, there's nothing left be conquered

This is major reason of why many huge empire failed to conquer the world.

One thing I never get: In Dystopia stories, how does killing one guy automatically save the world? it seems in just about every "Villain takes over the world" stry, the "World" is limited to where the protagonist is.

This is why "one guy with absolute command" is extremely risky business, as he died, his subordinate will lost the ability to resist chaotic situation and the entire reign will collapse.
