I was just curious. I've always experienced awkward playback on fansubs where the image slowly pans (ie. it gets a little choppy on landscape shots and the likes). I was wondering if this is a common thing to be expected or if there's something that could be done with it?

Yes! There is something that can be done about this. There are two possible problems. The first is that you have a slow system. To deal with this try using one of the players recommended in the Media Configuration Guide.

Media Player Classic 6.4.7.5 (2000/XP or 98/Me build)
Windows Media Player 6.4 (Start -> Run -> mplayer2)

The other (more likely) possibility is that your codecs are not optimal. To solve this one:

Uninstall all your codecs. Trust me. All of them:
Uninstall DivX.
Uninstall XviD.
Uninstall ffdshow.
Especially uninstall any Codec packs, They are Evil!

Download and install ffdshow-alpha 20030523. You'll find it listed as [Level 1] on the Media Configuration Guide.

I've got a problem that is the encoding process itself. After encoding a video file, I noticed that the slow panning scenes are really choppy, but in the original source file, the same scenes are smooth.

This is for viewtiful joe - 02, if seeing the episode will help explain what I mean. I want to keep it below 175mb for size reasons, but I also want to keep the screen from jumping during pans. it takes away from show quality, methinks. Is there a good source of info / guide to encoding? I'm still learning the ropes.

I did it using vitural dub Mod, and I tried multiple quality settings on both Xvid and Divx.

Ciello - it sounds like you're cutting the framerate down. As in video games, the more frames per second you have going, the smoother the animation (though this doesn't fully hold true for anime; there is truth behind the anime basher's remarks that anime has fewer frames than North American audiences may be used to).

Actually, I always thought that the seemingly jerky motion during pan scans was due to fansubbers (or some cappers) cutting the framerate from 30 or 120 to 24 myself. If it really is software-side, that's good to know.
