The anime does not cover all of the manga.

the anime barely covers HALF of the manga and changes/removes several characters (Tomoko's yakuza manager, Nurse Moritaka...(Moritaka has the same first name as Kadena but has a different hair color and slightly different personality...and she wasn't a biker chick as far as i know))
They fixed themselves into a hole since a lot of the edited plot points in the manga were important later on (the whole Mayu fiasco revolves around Moritaka knowing his medical history)

Yes, the anime does not adapt the entire story of the manga. A lot of details were even changed besides Nurse Moritaka's personality and background...

Spoiler:
In the anime, Urumi just appears to be an angsty bitch, much like Miyabi, hell both of them aren't even truly developed until AFTER Okinawa (IMO, the three most developed characters are Urumi, Miyabi, and Uchiyamada (mostly because Uchiyamada NEVER shuts up)Onizuka is pretty developed, but he's simplistic compared to the students and Uchiyamada))

manga discussion right?

Urumi, Miyabi, and Uchiyamada eh? i would have to say you are correct (evne though i have only read->15

i do however want to see more of noboru/anko... ... i thought that story had alot of potential.

Onizuka should be the most developed. (read bad company that is more focused on onizuka)... ...

Uchiyamada plays a significant role in the manga, and still does to a lesser extent in the anime. In the manga, you could almost say that he's the "second main character," and his stories mean more than simply providing an alternative point of view. He's practically the foil of Onizuka in the story.

When he's around Urumi, we see a bit of a change, but over all his personality is basically the same in vol. 1 as it is in vol. 17 (he still wants a cute attractive girl, tho now he seems to enjoy teaching more...)
i've always thought that Uchiyamada was so intimidated by Onizuka because he reminds him so much of himself (Uchiyamada just had a drastically different reason for becoming a teacher)

What makes onizuka's character so likeable is he DOESN'T change personality-wise at all, yet still manages to surprise the reader
Spoiler:

the characters around him, like Miyabi, Anko, Noboru, Urumi, Tomoko, Murai, and Fujiyoshi, all change drastically between vol. 2-3 (when all the staple character aside from Onizuka and Ryuji (and some of the students) are introduced) and the end.
