As to answer your question, i'll quote myself.

I guess the designers of the "New Macross" Class had a change of heart. [About Transforming Ship]

After all, they too thought it wasn't necessary, hence the predecessor "Megaroad" Class. [non-transformable ship]

I suppose when they order came though that they needed a "Battle Ready" Flagship to protect a fleet, they turned to the reassuring design of the SDF and Valkyries.

A.K.A Mankind's Saviour.

Hence why they can transform to the point that they even have "fingers" to pull a trigger on a weapon the size of a small ship.

But there are advantages to a separated Cannon, especially one the size of a ship, versus an integrated system. [and the humanoid shape itself]

Maintenance: It's far easier to service a ship-size weapon as a ship. m9ove it out to a spacedock. etc etc.

Design: It is far easier to devote an entire frame the size of a ship.... within a ship. Why be constrain to an exposed subsystem such as into an arm or backpack? Got more space and potential to devote an entire dedicated ship power plant to the weapon.

Battlefield Practicality [Humanoid Shape]: If the ship cannon is damage, just detached and grab another one. No need to worry about a shared power source.

It can be used as a physical weapon in emergences, without fear that it will damage the commanding ship itself.

Who was that pink Valkyrie fighter that shot Alto's rifle when he tried to save Luca? Is he on the Vajra side? I mean near the end of the episode it's in fold space and we see other valkyries with him (Are those UN as well?)

Holy effing sh** that was a rollercoaster of an episode. Eye candy galore.

Mr. Fantastic is my new favorite character, he has the best lines in this episode. Oh, and damn if I thought Kathy was really that, then... _effing_ Leon!

Just when you think that Macross was awesome enough, it got a whole lot more interesting. At this stage of the series, it's great to see more questions being dished out, which will provide more than enough fodder for the mecha otakus in the next week or so.

What are the origins of the mystery Valkyrie and why was it in the enemy capital ship in the first place?

So this is where all the budget went too

Talk about an awesome, fast paced space battle.

And holy hell did the grandship transform into a mecha (*flashes back to gurren lagann*) ~ I wonder if it gets much bigger than that, but the whole end scene was amazing

Any whats more, a mysterious young man who played Ranka's song on the mouth organ showed up. I have some suspicions as to who this new enemy is but I'll keep it a hush (mainly because I will laugh at myself for getting it wrong).

But yea, the fight was awesome.

Sheryl's concert started off with a bang, but does she have to use the whip all the time (makes her look sadistic in a bad way...especially when she is demanding that you listen to her song, or she will whip you i guess *shivers*).

Another thing, I suspect that her ear rings are actually transmitters

Ranka is still losing points...there is something about her that I just don't like very much (naive much or?).

Preview looks like the animation will go to the shits again...oh well, better savor this ep then

I don't understand if the purple Valkyrie is an enemy or what because it entered the Vajra's ship and killed some Vajra, but it doesn't seem to help Alto when he needs help and he shoots at Skull 3 gun too. I thought he was on Vajra's side but I guess I'm wrong: perhaps it's a third party or an alone warrior, who knows.
