In those days, the plan by the Alejandro/Ribbons faction was to get back the original Drives back anyways as shown with the backup disconnection.
The MG GN-X manual I recall mentions that the original plan was to have the GN-X installed with Original GN Drives, something the Corner Faction tried but failed to make without the special core. So they opted with the inferior Tau Drives instead. Later on though, I think it (or if I'm wrong, the 2nd mechanics book. I'm pretty confidant what I' about to say come from either the two) says that with the GN-X IIIs, they decided that Taus were strong enough and that there was no need to get the Original Drives. This is not totally relevant but essentially I'm saying there was a general feel that the Taus good easily match an Original for the most part. There was never any crazy attempt to get the Gundams like the blocs in S1. It was only after S2 12 Ribbons started going crazy over 00 and it's Twin Drive and even after he got the system he realized the significance of the original Drive during his battle with Setsuna when he realized he can use it to create his own powerful True Innovators.

Look to S201, when Louise positions her GN-XIII to hold it's current position. You'll see to orange propulsion streams pushing the GN-XIII back to hold still. I'd imagine that they break just like every other GNMS or MS for that matter. Forward propulsion.

More importantly, the amount of thrust needed to go into an immediet stop would be quite a lot.
I mean, I have my own (farfetched) theory but I wanted to hear what everybody else had in mind first. Quote:
Of course, your right. MS do have more thrusters than what normal animations usually show although they're small. 00 Raiser for example was showcased to have thrusters even in the sole in one of the G-R00MS artwork. Still, I have a strange feeling there's more to it than that. This also ties in to the dilemma about how the ships in the 00 world TA around the solar system. We still haven't figured out how exactly are they doing in, and I'm referring to their rates of acceleration/decelerations and when exactly are they initiating these thrust movements. I'm glad they showed it otherwise, its going to be one of those mysterious plotholes. I'm not an attentive person and I usually miss all these small details but for some strange reason, I noticed this the first time I watched it two years ago.
