No society has ever justified rape. They may ignore it when it does happen, especially if soldiers do it to conquered villages, but they never pretend that it is a GOOD thing.

I don't think the Vikings ever pretended that they had a problem with bridal capture. That's a bit to protracted and involved for it to be comparable to rapes you'd find in the typical post city sacking pillaging in that you couldn't really stop it... Though it might only count as rape up to Stockholm syndrome kicking in.

I find referring to Vikings as "unlawful" silly. English gets it's word for law from the Norse. They had a quite detailed legal system. This was a country that had trial by Jury for Freemen. It had a system of settling dispute between parties, and awarding damages (Weregild). Women could own and inherit property, and could file for divorce. This is hardly the characteristic of a bunch of unlawful Barbarians.

The thing is, these laws didn't apply to the people the Norse went out and sacked. Robbery, pillaging, and piracy are perfectly acceptable as long as you do them to somebody else.

A society as organized as the Vikings wouldn't have permitted something like Bridal capture if they had actually had an issue with it.
