I'd say no one really wins with the "power of heart or friendship" nowadays, so I wouldn't worry about that.
Protagonist win because they are special snowflakes. They don't win because they are average joes that work hard. (but a lot of them need to work hard still) They win because they come from a special pedigree or background. In Souma's case, he's the son of the world class chef, and has more or less, received internship training from his dad And it's not just him look at the other popular shounen jump titles leads.

Delicious Food + Heart > Delicious + No heart.
So, what is the problem here? You sounded like Soma's food was terribad, and the reason he won is because he put "DA HEART" into the food he cooked? If you have problem with the whole "Heart/Nakama" things, maybe you should stop reading Shonen Jump. |

I think the biggest problem is, people think "putting your heart into the food" is literally just having feelings while cooking.
But that's never been what they mean in this manga. It's not about pure feelings, the correct context is "thoughtful" or "considerate". Food that's considerate of the person eating it, and reflects it. It's not intangible at ALL. It's a physical reflection showcased in the dish.

Spoiler for alice:
Yeah, Aohige was right about the spoilers being unreliable. I checked the spoiler thread at 2chan again and one of the guy there was giving spoilers he got from this thread(yes this soma thread) lol. So we take spoilers from there while they take spoilers from there. Yup, its messed up. I guess Soma beating Alice was the only "true" spoiler(judging from that awesome illustration).

The 2ch spoilers were all fake this week, I think they lost the spoiler guy. I'd reserve any details until I read it in Japanese though. Regardless, the "putting heart in it" was a specific thing like I explained. Soma's was an actual bentou, filled with fun for the lunchtime. Alice was just a "sushi in a box" lol

I really hope that the spoiler that Von Himmel posted is the correct one, or that it is at least something along those lines (i.e. like aohige, I and others said, Alice failed to get the theme right). I agree with DevilHighDxD that if they will instead really talk about the "power of love & friendship", then this chapter will be a failure.

I think souma has a fair win here and no one can say he won because of shounen hero power , i mean alice didnt consider the people that eat her food she just looked down on them it was like " just be greatful to eat my food you peasants " while souma was like " this food is made specially for you my valuable costumers " . Ofcouse that made a big difference for judges .

Though I love my mom very much and dearly, most of the time she cook like... Well I really don't want to used that word. But you get what I meant. Plus I get more bad memories than good from it, that half-cooked bacon the other day...(shiver). T_T

What I'm referring is how some dish can be likened to "mom's cooking" as in: being more than just a delicious dish. Simply put, taste isn't everything and if you had at least some experience with different type of dish with variant in term of side dish/cooking process, you would have realized what aohige meant. It isn't about pouring feelings into it, but rather how the dish suits those who will eat it, as in what kind of considerate move would go along with cooking the dish. Presentation, for one, is part of it. Don't tell me taste is everything, otherwise you are telling me that half the process in a restaurant is meaningless. And anyone who has gone/worked in a restaurant would tell you otherwise. Composition is another one: some dish would lose its prime aroma without a certain ingredient, but likewise the latter may be too much for some people (hence why Megumi was often complimented, because she actually give extra attention to the judges, so having a very digest dish has actually worked in her favor before). A bento is hardly a mere lunch in a box. So you don't put a luxury sushi set in a box and give it a go. That's non sense.
