Wasn't a bad second episode with some more information thrown in. Didn't think we'd get the past tie between Ryuji and Rose that quickly, but no complaint there. One heck of a guy to randomly find her egg like that and that's why she was imprinted on him. Of course it might just be an assumption and more happened after that egg hatched than he currently remembers.

Onyx certainly made a mess of the place. A crazy level of power for him to just walk through everyone and grab Rose. Although thanks to Ryuji not being willing to use what power he apparently has with that Breaker level there wasn't much they could do.

Not sure about Eriko's feelings on those earrings. The way she was talking it was more like she was upset that he took a possession of hers rather than having any emotional attachment to the items. Suppose we need to find out more about her past later.

And talk about crappy parents for Ryuji. Doesn't even bother saying anything to her son that doesn't relate to Rose. Wonder how they even found time to have a kid with their apparent lack of interest. No wonder the guy is somewhat messed up. Though think there is more to Ryuji's issues towards those items than just his parents.

Much information was thrown at us, although most of them were speculations from that scientist. Apparently, Rose and Ryuji did meet sometime in the past, and the theory of imprinting occurred. Apparently, she's too young to grow wings and must have used her magic out of spite from the last episode. Wow, is his parents horrible. After not seeing them for so long, all they care about her lost preciouses, thus the reason of Ryuji's attitude towards Lost Preciouses and not caring about his Level 10 status. About those earrings that the black dragon has, what it its relationship to Eriko? More information would probably be said in the next episode. In any case, Ryuji is obviously not satisfied with what happened, but can he do anything about it even with that personality of his?

A bit more dull than the previous episode... Rose was cute, yes, and it is nice she can talk now (all of a sudden...), but the protagonist was, on the other hand, very.............................................. .. boring. And his emotional problem was not inspiring and did not make me feel anything...
Whether it is supposed to be that way or because of the way it was shown, don't know...
Hope he goes into Ratatosk Mode sometime soon.

I think the light novels did a better job of explaining this...

I figured I'd translate the prologue from Volume 1. It really does a much, much, much better explanation of the whole "imprint" stage.

Am I, dead I wonder.

With such thoughts Kisaragi Ryuuji sat down atop a large pile of rocks. Directly next to him was a sheer cliff face. If his legs slipped and he fell, there was no telling how far it would be.

As far as he could see, there was nothing but ashen rocks all around, and in this desolate area Ryuuji had already spent around an hour. His throat was parched, and because of the high altitude he was also getting dizzy. The air was biting cold, yet because it was summer, even with the current chill there should be help somewhere. However, this was a harsh situation for a five year old boy to be in.

"Father, Mother..."

Ryuuji called out to his parents in a hoarse voice. His face was stained with tears.

However; because of his exhaustion, the tears weren't falling anymore.

His parents were "Treasure Hunters," and because of that they were often flying overseas for work.

Usually Ryuuji was the one left to take care of the house, but for some reason he had been brought along this time to Albania. Yet during his happiness, he had ended up facing this steep craggy mountain.

He had strayed from his parents while enthusiastically searching for something, and had become quite lost.

When you're lost in a mountain you should not move, that was an ironclad rule of which very young Ryuuji had no way of knowing.

In the midst of moving his legs, they ceased to function and Ryuuji came to a halt.

Out of strength Ryuuji seated himself on a small rock, as just then a heavy rumbling sound was carried to his ears. Lifting his face, Ryuuji watched as cream colored rocks came tumbling his way.

But the statement that they were rocks was a little misplaced. Their outer surface was shaped like an ellipse. Even though they were rather too large, they looked like eggs.

Continuing on, the egg like objects fell off the edge of the cliff.

“Wa, wawa!”

Standing up reflexively, one of the egg shaped objects about his own size had stopped in front of him.

Looking at the force behind it, it seemed heavier than he could even imagine. Ryuuji's legs failed him, and he dropped onto his knees. The cliff was just behind him.

“Gaaa!~”

Bracing his legs, Ryuuji pushed the egg like object with all his might back towards a level area.

“Fuu...”

Ryuuji stared once more at the object basked in the suns light, glittering pearl gray.

Along the hard surface, even though it had fallen to here, there didn't even seem to be one crack.

From it's smoothness, it was most likely not a rock. Touching it, it seemed to be a slightly warm egg. But still strangely large.

“W, what is this...

There was a sharp sound, startling Ryuuji. From the center of the egg cracks appeared.

“Eh? Eh Eh!?”

With sharp cracking noises, the cracks increased.

Ryuuji sucked in his breath. This was just like the hatching of an egg.

A slit.

From the center of the crack, a hand appeared.

It was white, and slender---that was without a doubt a human hand.

“Ah, AHHHH!!”

Not expecting such an appearance in the least, Ryuuji let out a terrific scream.

Wh, what is this!

With a pop the upper half of the shell came off.

Sitting inside the the center of the shell, was a completely naked young girl with golden yellow hair. She seemed to be around four years old.

She looked just like a beautiful girl who had come from a foreign picture book.

Her slim body was dripping wet from the egg, with her gently sloping chest puffed out.

Letting out her breath calmly, she slowly opened her eyes. With golden hair plastered to her white face, she turned her eyes towards Ryuuji. She stared at him with eyes that were even bluer than the sky.

Slowly she opened her lips which were the color of cherry blossoms.

And from the center of the egg, the girl---.

As Ryuuji stood in a blank daze, the girl coughed violently.

“Y, you okay?”

The moment he called out, dizziness assaulted him as he fell to his knees.

It was hard to breath---and before him everything started going dark.

The girl extracted herself from the center of the egg, slowly drawing closer, as Ryuuji watched with the last ounces of his hazy consciousness.

A wet hand reached out, and softly touched the side of his cheek.

Ah---

Something soft was pushed against his lips.

With the sensation of the kiss, darkness finally closed in entirely, and Ryuuji lost consciousness.

Spoiler for ep2:

So, in episode 2, they really rushed some stuff I think in explaining the whole thing with Rose...it's not like Ryuuji just "found" an egg. He had gotten separated from his parents, who had taken him there to be a part of their expedition. When he's lost in the cold of the mountains, he is by a cliff, when an avalanche comes. one of the "rocks" is rolling by him, and he stops it, pretty much. (otherwise he would have gone off the cliff) and it turns out this "rock" is a dragon egg, and he just probably saved Rose's life. That's one of the reasons she is so attached to him, at least in the novels. The anime really weakened this part I think...>_<

Also, in the novel, Ryuuji has a great dislike for eating eggs....wonder why, lol...traumatized. You would be too if you saw a blond girl hatching from one. As for his personality, in the novels I think it's portrayed a bit better as well. There was some kind of accident with Lost Precious a while back, and because of that he's pretty much sworn not to go near the stuff, and now Rose shows up, and Ryuuji just wants to go back to his normal, lonely life without the aggravation, but in the end he does start to really care about Rose, which we see in ep3 ^_^

But so far, pretty good.

Ryuuji is a disappointing main character so far. He is insensitive to others and is emo about his own concerns. So far, he hasn't shown any impressive traits, either. He let the girl he hurt emotionally save him and could do nothing about it.

I do hope his attitude changes soon, or else he will be the most disappointing protagonist since Kouichi from Kurogane no Linebarrels.

I don't mind a flawed character at first, so his actions this episode didn't bother me. And from the preview it looks he won't stay in his emo stage for long...

Also I couldn't help but see some resemblances to Dragonaut. Expect Eriko's boobs are way too small...

Im really going to hope being a level 10 breaker means nothing without something to use because if he could have done something but instead decided to just get his butt whooped and let them take Rose thats just sad. Only thing I can think of is that higher level breaker you are the more power you get out of lost precious or whatever which I guess would give him a reasonable out for why he sat there and got beat.

Being a breaker doesn't mean much if you don't have your lost precious. Pretty much what a breaker is,　is the english name for "遺物使い " that the author chose. Those kanji pretty much mean something like "Legendary Artifact User", and the author calls them "Breakers"

It's ranked 1-10 (i think). What the levels mean, is your ability to use and control Lost Precious Artifacts, 遺物 . (the first two kanji in the word above, so "Legendary Artifacts" - it is the author who coins the term "Lost Precious.")

so, Ryuuji is a rank 10 breaker, which means he can use S-rank Lost Precious items.

Oh yeah, and very disappointing Ryuuji, you have just fallen slightly behind the MC 'standard', that was completely uncalled for lashing out at Rose.

I didn't like much dragonaut so I didn't even remember it or see the resemblance. I can only think is "what the heck is Izahaya doing here?"

Thanks for a bit on clarification from the novel part because I haven't touch it yet.

I'm also thinking that the level is something got to do with the affinity or how much power one can drew out from a lost precious.

For novel readers it might be rushed but for me. I felt contented on the phasing. And maybe a bit slow because too much emo. Hate emo MC and useless one that doesn't fight back.

But the episode 3. Did look promising and will wait for more.

Rose's voice and character design, and Erika's voice and personality, continue to be good. But the whole thing wasn't done all that well, and sank to kid's cartoon level from time to time. I don't mind Ryuuji's quite sensible aversion to Lost Precious affairs, and to his mother. Clearly, we're being set up for him to become more of a hero as we go on. A character that has normal fears and aversions is a lot more interesting than a perfect hero from a children's story. But this show in general may not hold my attention that long.

Ryuji is your average normal guy MC to me and I got no problem with that. I just hope there's a good reason behind why he is one of seven Level 10 Breakers or it'll get ridiculous. That Izaya ehh I mean Onyx was able to 'rescue' (more like abduct) Rose was great, she better stay abducted for the next whole episode as well or the impact of the villain's success level over one thing will be crushed too early and again it'll become ridiculous. I didn't like the doc's loud voice, the mom was a bit annoying, too so I see that Ryuji is going through a lot of 'meh'. Rose suddenly able to speak was, well, sudden. lol But nothing bad I guess. The episode was good but could have been done better imo.

I thought this episode was decent.

We understood a bit about Rose's background, and how Ryuji met her. In a way, I can understand that Ryuji is having tough times. It looked as he lived alone before Eriko and Rose showed up. While, his parents are thinking of nothing than Lost Precious. His mother didn't even say "Hi. How are you?" on the phone. She just went straight into the point of Rose. Quite rude for a parent, who thinks of their own interest liked it was more important than their own son. Having a small chat with his mother for so long, I feel Ryuji just had to take his frustration out on Rose at the moment. I doubt he meant to do, or say anything to seriously hurt her. By the end of the episode, he already figured out that Rose took him pretty serious. What seaghyn16 posted seems to help understand the sitution better than the episode did. It would be nice if the next episode explained it than left us hanging of what Ryuji's problem is. However, I like what I see about Ryuji. Hopefully, he would become a better hero in the next few episodes.

I am curious about the Breaker stuff as well. Also, it was nice to heard Rose speak more. I thought she was cute eating ice cream happily. Looks liked Rose's favorite food is going to be ice cream.

A new level? No, it's been done before. The Wallflower used stick figures occasionally to add comedy and save costs. (Zombie-Loan also used stick figures every once in a while for comedy but because the stick figures scenes were that way in the original manga, I don't include them in the category of cost-cutting animation.)
