Hmm...WinXP supports creating restore points. If you didn't create any I am sure winXP did for you when you were using windowsupdate. Try using restore system.

!!! WARNING !!! it will return ALL your files and content to date when restore point was created

Restore, recover? I see it like this:
Restore/Revert=Go back to a previous state.
Recover=Get back something you lost.

What exactly do you want to do? If you want to restore and it's not by using a system restore point, then you'll need a cd. Unless you made a backup with some 3rd party tool (their cd).

You can use 3rd party data recovery software which can even recovery files that you have deleted or even files in a partition that you accidently deleted the entire patition.

some of those softwares are fairly small so they might fit into floppy disks but most of them are not free.

Just search "data recovery software" in google. You will find a lot.

I should add that using recovery disks isnt the same as doing a format and reinstalling. If you use recovery disks, it removers all files EXCEPT System, files, so if there is a problem with something in your system folders, then even doing a recovery won't fix it. Why is this? because recovery disks AREN'T the actual OS, which is why you cannot install windows with recovery disks after a format, or on a clean HDD.
