I believe in your case, your "despair" was merely the result of watching the game opening first. Personally I believe you would of gotten a different impression of the anime trailer should you of watched that first rather then the game opening.

It's better not to compare the game animation to the anime adaptation, for starters like many people said, with a game opening movie, it's usually only a few minutes in length which means that they can put the time and the effort into making it fabulous. Animes on the other hand are 13 times or 26 times 23 min worth of animation, the difference in quality would be obviously noticeable.

When viewing the trailer for the anime, the animation personally felt spectacular, it's only when you are comparing it with the game opening does the brilliance of the game movie overshadow that of the anime. Honestly it's like saying that silver is worthless because you've tasted the lustre of gold...

This looks quite amazing. I know next to nothing about it, really, but the preview released a few days ago has excellent music, Nice character designs, and hints of that psychotic school girl theme that is popular now (And that I love.). This should prove to be an interesting show.

Oh... my God. SHAFT has done it again. I'm not sure if I should call this a truly disgusting joke or an experimental masterpiece.

I'm thinking many might take this anime seriously enough due to the lack of experience of the original material, but I simply can't. SHAFT will never be able to grow out of its skin, it seems, despite what the prologue showed us. Even so, I like what they did with the funny in the episode, and overall I'm satisfied, not as a fan of the original story, but a fan of innovative animation direction in general.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the ED song was kind of lame. The art was cute, almost 'shoujo-like'. I expect something better next time for the OP though. I hope the song relentlessflame pointed out gets to be in it.

I'm just done with the first episode, and i have VERY MIXED feelings.

basically, i felt the episode horribly confusing, as it is shifting with the 3 male "leads" too abruptly.
The transitions between "normal" views, and "weird camera" and "alternative arts" are sometimes brilliant, but other times, dubious or invasive. (the absurd amount of changes in Miyako and Hiro scene is quite a deal for me)
Some of them were really too abrupt, and almost looking "oi, out of the blue", almost like Negima!? (some parts in Miyako scene, especially the blakc and white "multiplicated Miyako")

Even though the Church scene wasn't that important, I think it was kinda forced in the SHAFT version, as it almost completely looks useless, due the shortness, and the lack of impact/lines from either hiro or yuuko.
Renji and Chihiro were nicely introduced, though the non stop shift of camera almost annoyed me... is it done for dynamism or confusion, i wonder...
Yuu got completely shafted, though only shown with renji for a little while (guess both he and yuuko won't have much screentimes huh.)

The quality of this episode is very very neat, but the execution and squeezed content is a bit meh for me.
between 7-8 in my books.

EDIT: for those who are wondering what is this song on the official site, it is Euphoric Field, which will be released the 24th october.

That song is the OP. If you go to the "Broad Band" section, there's a 15-second commercial featured for it.

Which I can't play for some reason (like, the .asx never loads)... hmm... perhaps some sort of regional lock-out, or maybe something else going on.

Edit: Fixed already -- it seems to be some sort of IE7 issue, for some reason. If anyone else has this problem, try Firefox.

Well what can i say? I am actually glad that shaft took things with moderation (unlike negima?!) and whilst some scenes did feel funny - like the sudden ZOMG 10 black and white miyakos for nowhere!, we all know that they are capable of doing a lot more damage than this

Overall I am quite impressed with this start -

Spoiler: The series started off with Renji. I expected it to be Hiro. A few minutes later my updated expectations were betrayed again when Shousuke's and Hiro's storylines were introduced. I honestly thought they were going to fully cover Renji first, but they apparently decided to cover them all at the same time, skipping from one storyline to the other. He and Chihiro did get the most screen time, though. Let's warp to Hiro's storyline: At first I thought this was a bad joke. They inserted SHAFT's 'merchadise' as joke material, not to mention their own version of a Touhou-like PC shooter. Before the series aired today I played ef - the first tale. again just over the first Miyako ero event. All in all the game dialogue between Miyako and Hiro are entertaining and funny all through their part, but the atmosphere created by the story, direction, CG-angles, music is very romantic, dramatic, almost heavy, not to mention every NEET in the world can identify himself with Miyako. SHAFT, the little rascals, put both the entertaining and the drama together--just like the game--but emphasized the entertaining. I didn't think they shafted Renji's and Shousuke's parts of the episode like they did Hiro's. However, I recognise my bias here. I know Hiro's story well from the game, but I didn't have time to play through Renji's and Shousuke's yet. I know what elements SHAFT used at certain points in their respective parts to bring out the funny, but they simply had no effect on me. I am actually glad that shaft took things with moderation (unlike negima?!) and whilst some scenes did feel funny - like the sudden ZOMG 10 black and white miyakos for nowhere!, we all know that they are capable of doing a lot more damage than this Overall I am quite impressed with this start - Spoiler: The jumps between the male leads didnt phase me one bit to be honest. In fact, if they do intend on covering all of the stories than this may be the most effective and "non abrupt" way there can be. I would find it hard to focus soley on a single male and then to switch to another path with hardly anything linking in between (kinda like when someone pushes the reset button). I have only played a bit of the translated demo but enough of hiro's path to know what they have been skipping out so far. I would say that it couldnt have been helped but nothing too major has been skipped as far as i can see. Though the sight of hiro having a personality change due to lack of "inner thoughts" shown in the game is a bit worrying. I dont like the thought that he is changing in the anime seen as i loved his cocky bastard attitude in the game But what was lovely has to be the scene with renji and chihiro - together with the goddam irresistable BGM ZOMG im melting! Ok, this is not another series where the guy goes after other girls? I don't want to compare with School Days because I hated it. But that sorta what im asking. The animation was really weird at times and the skipping was noticeable, but I liked it... The animation was interesting, in fact. Acting randomly and such... For some reason, the fact that they put the title at the end of the episode made me feel it was over, though there are obviously more episodes. Was that the opening this week (the black backgrounds)? The ending felt average. I guess some of the character interaction felt odd to me, but oh well. Last scene with the camera boy Woah! For some reason, this has become one of my favorites, just by first episode, along with a few others.
