Dunno, but I found that anime style tends to not goes well in live action. Maybe because the graphic style is much of the appeal, maybe because of the slight over-exagerration that is always present, mainly because of the way the action is done.
Also, no offense, but I usually found Japanese actors to be, well... not that good. Just the opposite of their voice actors, funilly, which are usually better than others. Perhaps just my prejudice, though, but even in Kurosawa movies, I found the acting quality quite lacking - most of the time because of overacting and lack of natural. Perhaps with good actors and a decent budgets, it could be done, but I just don't feel that anime can be translated into live action really well. Something just not fit in (now, perhaps if I saw an actual good example, I could change my mind about it). Though I would gladly try this Melancholy of Hahiru Suzumiya if it did cast Aya Hirano... |

Reputation. When you can only pick at most 4 (arbitrary number, but surely there must be more than one! ) decent anime-to-live-action adaptations in the last two decades... this speaks for itself mostly.

I'm aware of... Dragon Ball (western live-action) Speed Racer (western live-action) Death Note Higurashi (I think) Sailor Moon ...That's all I can think of off the top of my head (I don't count porns). I'll admit that it's not the best of records. Still, it's a short record... unless there's been a lot more anime/manga translated into live action over in Japan that I'm not aware of. I do agree that video game-to-live action is almost always fail. It amazes me how anybody can get excited over a video game-to-live action movie at this point.

Sample list: http://www.listal.com/list/anime-live-action-movies
Aside from the Western films, I've only seen GTO (and Death Note, but only parts). I don't know how accurate the ratings over there are, but at least from my side of the internet, only Death Note, GTO (some claim this to be better than the original anime!) and H&C -- and to a lesser extent DMC -- have been received pretty well (again, not counting Western films). Again, most live-action adaptations are expected to fail, so people go "no, please, no" to not destroy their image of the characters. On game adaptations... Western game-to-live-action conversions of big names like the announced Warcraft and Halo movies attract large audiences due to their respective universe's rich lore (not to mention sheer popularity). Other games, however...

I can't believe I forgot Blood: The Last Vampire, though. I wasn't a big Blood+ fan, but I read a Roger Ebert review of the movie, and he seemed to like it well enough, for whatever that's worth. Quote:
Dragon Ball and Street Racer were not received well, over-all, so I can see that having a negative impact on western anime fans. Quote:

2011 will see at least two major Animes get the hollywood live-action treatment: (aka American remake). Ghost in the Shell and Death Note. Yes Hollywood is going to do their own remake of Death Note despite there already being THREE Japanese live action versions.
Not to mention they will have a hard time getting Ghost in the Shell right. God I hope at least one of them isn't a complete train wreck...

It's like everyone immediately jumped up after that started raking in at the box office and pounced on the closest cartoon IP they could find.

That would be Hollywood's "me too" aspect in effect. If someone does something that's a success, everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Happened with Spider-Man and comic book movies, too.
If any video game movie ends up a huge success, expect every franchise in history to get one.

I did like the Transformers movies. But though I didn't like the sequel quite as much now that I re-watched the first one. (and yes they will be making a third!). I'm not that picky in terms of plot content, but the Transformers lacked a noticeable amount of it and for me, thats saying something...

Oh Great Maker, I am very glad I'm not a DN fan. I pity them greatly, especially considering what Dragonball just went through. And in some forced attempt to remain on topic, I'd say that the Haruhi franchise should get a live action movie in Japan, but definately NOT a western version. Hollywood needs to get off the remake/adaptation fever and get onto more original content.

GITS being probably reduced to explosions and three lines of technical explanation is already a horrible thought, but Death Note likely slaughtered into some kind of action movie fills me with horror. Of course, I may be wrong, and they may at least try to stay true to the idea, but... Wanna bet ? :x Hu, yes. I think. So ? |

I suspect that Hollywood will try to make Death Note into a CSI-like film. I fully expect for Light's father and his cop team to get significantly more screen time in this movie than they did in the actual anime. I'm fairly certain that Hollywood can turn Death Note into a commercial success - its premise is like a cross between a supernatural thriller and CSI, both of which tend to do well in America. Now, whether or not this Death Note movie will be good for fans of the actual anime... we'll have to wait and see.
